Official music video for Ryuichi Sakamoto's 'Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence'.
I got known Ryuichi Sakamoto was dead just a few minutes ago. It is very sad, but his works have been impressing many people and he will influence a lot of future artists. What we can do is remembering his name and music to tell future generations how he is great. From Japan. R.I.P. Your music will live in our hearts forever.
I'm from Canada, and I'm blessed to have heard this man's voice speak to me through his music.
Wordless prayer from Finland.
I did the exact same thing, rip x
RIP Maestro Sakamoto. From Belgium, and for sure all over the world.
💔 from France
I'm so sad right now like I've lost someone very close to me.
Thank you Ryuichisan for your wonderful music and for your presence
RIP Ryuichi Sakamoto. This is one of the songs that introduced me to his work and ever since I had been a big fan. It's a shame he's gone but his music is timeless.
He will live on forever in our memories

Is it Just me or does this song sound EXACTLY like a Studio Gibhli soundtrack? If so, who copied whom?
Indeed
It took me over 15 years to find this piece. I heard it one single time in my whole life and the main melody I could never forget
It wracked my brain for so long that I began to think I made it up. By sheer chance i heard it once again while at home when it just happened to be playing
15 years of waiting to come across it one more time. Every second was worth the wait
damn that must feel gooood!
Congratulations, those are the true moments that make worth living.

That's a wonderful story! I'm happy for ya, friend.
Yup agreed
I don't understand I have such a nostalgia with this song, but I'd swear its my first time hearing it.
+Jesse Ofosu-Adu Its called great music.
+Jesse Ofosu-Adu The trance music group Watergate used the melody in their rave anthem Heart of Asia.
+Jesse Ofosu-Adu Or maybe you seen the movie with the same name back in the days
+Jesse Ofosu-Adu Or you played this? /watch?v=TwfgP7OtQG4
Erico Shimatta I actually haven't watched the movie before I listened to it.
This is a tune which once you have heard it once it stays with you for ever.
Immediately led here from Bourdain's documentary, Roadrunner
This tune is synonymous with the movie(in which Ryuchi Sakamoto was in as well) Merry Christmas Mister Lawrence.
Seen it quite a few times and have the album as well(original pressing).
RIP Ryuchi.
The same with ROSE I Feel!
I first heard when the show came out with David Bowie, s very sad story and double with David gone and Mr Sakamoto
Sad news indeed.
My name is Lawrence. I discovered this song when I was 13 years old and being bullied very badly at school and by my father at home. I’m now 30 and still listen to it. It tells the story of my life. Small and feeble at the start, but growing more confident and defiant on my life, not giving up
Im greatfull for you Lawrence.
Please be happy in life.
I'm glad you had this song to help you through things. Don't let the bullies win 😊
Lovely to hear that you're refusing to let your childhood experiences define who you are now. It must have been awful for you, Lawrence , but you're doing the best that you can now. That perseverance is an admirable trait that you have.
Lawrence, the film was based on a section of the Sir Lawrence van der Post novel, the Seed and The Sower.
Read it. It is redemptive.
i wish you nothing but genuine love and happiness from this day forward, You deserve that and more
Thank you for everything Ryuichi Sakamoto. Your art means more than you know and will live on in the infinity of the hearts of humanity
When I was going through a rough time in my life, I would listen to this song all the time. I’ll never forget a moment I had when I was particularly sad, when I walked down to the local gas station around midnight and the cashier was listening to this song. He seemed sullen and sad as well, and as I put my food on the counter for him to scan, I said, “Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, I love that song.” His whole demeanor changed and he said, “I didn’t expect anyone coming in here tonight to recognize this.” We made small conversation after that, and we were both smiling as I left the store.
No ending like: And now we have been together for the last 30 years.

How are you Dave ? How's life ?
@@crownedclown49 Hi, thanks for asking! Life isn’t going too bad at the moment actually. 😄What about yours, friend?
My dad died back in 2021. For his funeral I requested that this song to be played at it. He had never watched the movie and never heard the soundtrack, but to me it felt reflective in the sense you could listen to it and think about both the good times and the bad times of either your own life, or of someone you know. This may not be the correct way to interpret this piece, but it's what I think of it whenever I come back to listen to it.
Than you Ryuichi Sakamoto for you musical talents, rest in peace.
That’s what I hear too
This is what good music is made for.

Whenever I hear this song, I imagine someone who visits the place he grew up and remembers how beautiful it used to be and how it isn't anymore and everyone he knew and loved is gone. But there is a hint of hope, because he knows that, at least he got to live those beautiful moments and they will always stay dear inside his heart. It fills my eyes with tears of sadness and nostalgia.

Tysm Mr. Sakamoto, for letting IVE sampling your masterpieces ❤❤❤❤
This is one of the most beautiful songs my husband and I have ever heard. Five years ago when our son was born three months early, we would play this song to him in his isolette crib in NICU. He loved to hear our voices and he loved hearing music. Although tiny, he was a strong baby, and after many long months, a lot of equipment, medication and caring he made a recovery. He is a very happy, inquisitive, loving and fun little boy now, and he will start school in about a week.
So happy to hear :)
Happy to hear that!

God bless you and your family :)
Bless you and your son. I'm glad it worked it out. That's beautiful.
I’m normally not one to mourn the death of famous people however this one hits hard. I would’ve never bought a piano if it wasn’t for my desire to be able to play even a fraction of what Mr Sakamoto could.
He’ll always be the greatest in my eyes and I’ll never stop listening. Thank you for everything Rest Peacefully.

It hurts more knowing Yukihiro Takahashi just passed in January too.
But y play ,all that matters 😊❤

I am here for the same reason. I don't think I've ever had tears in my eyes at the passing of a composer before, but here I am. Sakamoto is the reason I started playing Piano. I will continue to learn his pieces and honour his wonderful creations.
I believe that in 100 years there will still be many people who will feel the same emotions that we feel today when we listen to this timeless masterpiece.
Music such as this will stand the rest of time and rightly so. Truly incredible.
Yes definitely hun
I wonder what Mr. Sakamoto is thinking of as he plays this. His face is serene, with an occasional smile.

Thinking of David Bowie?
@@sallyjohnson5985 same!!!
I can say for a fact that playing the piano feels something like meditation, after practicing playing a song the muscles in your hands will get used to the keys. As a result most of the time when I play piano I'm normally thinking about hitting the right keys or not screwing up, but I also feel very relaxed. Maybe it's just me, but playing Piano is like a kind of Zen, you aren't really thinking about anything besides the sound of the music.
@@inactive_ina true, when you get used to playing a song you get into some kind of a trance - at least I do- it's like I'm not there anymore, something close to ecstacy. Something that can't be achieved doing anything else

I wanna share a little story under this beautiful song.
When I was in high school , there was a cute boy that I liked. He was quite shy I’d say. He didn’t talk much. But we shared same classes , and he was even my desk mate in some of them.I was always the one to start a conversation, but he was always the one who ended it . And this one time he had earphones on so I asked him what he was listening. He told me it was just some melody , and for the first time he asked me something. He asked if I wanted to listen to it. And I did . I didn’t really liked it at the time but I lied saying it was the most beautiful thing I have ever heard . We talked and talked and at the end I finally had a courage to ask his number , I said I wanted the link and if he was fine with sending it to me (I don’t even know why I said that lame excuse) he just smiled and said yes. After a while we started messaging to each other everyday and we became serious after 3 months. We have dated for 3 years and this one time he took me to a restaurant and he went to go to the bathroom. And suddenly I heard this song playing , I recognised the song right away. Looked back ,there he was playing the piano( he had 0 experience with piano so I was indeed shocked) (it wasn’t the perfect performance but for me it was amazing) that’s when he asked to marry me . I cried like a b .
(Just so you know neither of us really liked this ,it just happened to be in one of his playlist. I thought it was his favourite melody since he was messaging me about it non stop and he thought I liked it since I always responded. But now it is indeed our favourite melody )
Wow! Read your story with the song behind was very touching

For me, I feel like it’s a winter night sitting by the fireplace in your comfortable napping rocking chair. Or just reading a book, maybe even drawing, studying. Anything. You hear the fire crackles and you see the night outside the window full of snowflakes slowly drifting in the calm wind. You smell the cedar wood, burning fire place, and cup of coffee or maybe even pumpkin spice. And it just continues on into the deep night.

Rest in peace Mr. Sakamoto. You will forever be missed. The world has lost another giant today.
The past few weeks I have been feeling off - the intense anger I have when I was growing up was back sitting on my chest and I could not pinpoint where it was coming from. This song along with On The Nature Of Daylight (Max Richter), S.T.A.Y. (Hans Zimmer) and I Am the Antichrist to You (Nu Deco Ensemble & Kishi Bashi) have been my rotation to soothe my soul.
Last night, while I was listening to my playlist, I came to realize where the anger was coming from - it was because I will be visiting home. And there are realities at home that I have not accepted yet and so the anger was a mask for my agony.
When I go home, I will see the heavy weight my mother has to carry for being a caretaker of my father, a man who never treated her well.
He suffered a stroke years back and became half paralyzed. Since then, my mother has been sacrificing to tend to his needs. Two months ago, his health has worsened. Now, he is bed ridden and is no longer mobile.
I'll be seeing my mother doing 10x more sacrifice. I'll see her tired, barely sleeping.
And I am afraid to look at my mother's pale and scrawny face - and notice the lines, wrinkles and visible stress creeping in. As my cousin told me a week ago that he was not able to recognize my mom because she lost weight and aged a lot (must be from the burden she is carrying).
A moment ago, I was about to pack my things since in 9 hours I'll be hopping on the plane on my way home - but out of nowhere I decided to open Facebook which I only do once in a couple of months (I guess this is my self's resistance to going home) and the first post I saw was about Ryuichi Sakamoto's passing.
I quickly jumped to Google to confirm the heartbreaking news and next thing I know here I am writing this comment.
This is the first time I am leaving such a comment on TH-cam, sharing a personal piece of myself to a bunch of strangers on the internet (I know it's messy and all over the place). But why am I doing this? Because this song is close to my heart.
I grew up with a lot of anger hidden inside of me - in fact, I was good at hiding it that nobody could tell that. People would just describe as a someone with a stoic and serious expression.
The first time I heard this song, it helped me come into terms with the anger inside of me - this song helped me welcome it, sit with it and accept it. For the first time in my life I was at peace with the anger inside me.
This song was there by my side when I stared at the walls and the ceiling for hours with the wave of emotions inside of me. This song has accompanied me to many nights where I cried myself to sleep.
This song helped me cried - because I needed to cry. Cry my heart out because of anger, because of anguish, because of grief.
And because I cried my heart out, the load inside my chest lessened. This song did not only helped me lament the realities of life. But this song helped me carry on and move forward.
This song is forever etched in my soul. Thank you Mr. Sakamoto for your music. It lives on with me.

Sakamoto once said that he has spent the last half century wondering “What is music?” I don’t know if he ever found a satisfactory answer, but there can be no doubt that the thing to which he devoted his life was music- music that tells stories, music that touches hearts, music that both hides the artist and strips him bare before the world.

I am glad to have discovered his music, its beautiful 😌
Ryuichi is an amazing man, a humanitarian, a person who truly cares about the world, an activist who does. An Oscar winner for 'The Last Emperor' and robbed of one with 'The Revenant' due to an absurd technicality. His work displays an array of artists that sampled his work, wanted to work with him in some form or just simply used his melodies. From Michael Jackson to Madonna or Eric Clapton, the list is endless. On hearing that his cancer had returned was a devastating blow to the man himself but to all those who love him, both family and fans who wish the great man and i mean a 'great man' all the support he deserves. Watashi no sonkei.
I just discovered this man today and this even hurts me

Well said
This song means so much to me because of my best friend. We met on a game, Sky, and began talking every day. After a few months, she took me to a special place in the game and told me she had a song to share with me. She took out her piano item and played this song for me. I’d never heard it before so I wondered why she picked it for me. Recently, a few weeks ago, I asked why this song. She replied that the song made her feel safe and loved and reminded her of our friendship.
We don’t have contact anymore since her parents don’t want her to have online friends and they found out about her having them. I miss her so much, she’s one of the best friends I’ve ever had. M4ngy, I’ll never forget you :,> thank you so much for the memories.

これこそまさに日本が世界に誇る坂本龍一
I saw him live back in 2019, and I’m so grateful that I had the chance. Rest well, Sakamoto San. Thank you so much for all the inspiration you gave me and many others with your music.

RIP Mr Sakamoto.
My grandfather was captured by the Japanese and tortured almost to death. But even under such circumstances, he NEVER spoke ill of Japan after the war ended. He befriended a Japanese guard, who looked after him right to the end (risking his own life should he be discovered trying to help a commonwealth soldier).
I view the late Mr Sakamotos Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence as a tribute to ALL COMMONWEALTH AND JAPANESE SOLDIERS WHO LOST THEIR LIVES IN A POINTLESS WAR. AND IT SHOULD BE HEARD AND TREATED AS SUCH.
God Bless you Mr Sakamoto, and forever rest in piece.

このピアノソロの演奏を聴き、泣きそうです。こんなにも心に響く演奏を聴くのは久々です。 心が浄化されるようです。
感動をありがとうございました!!
Every note, every little phrase he holds, every bit of silence in between lines, every feels so...personal. This isn't a man performing for an audience. This is a man playing a song for anyone that wants to listen to his heart. And he really does put his heart into every single note. This is the type of piano player I want to be. I never want to play to the point that I can play everything as intended. Because then there won't be anything of me in the sound that comes out. I know nothing about Ryuichi Sakamoto, but I can hear every part of him in this piece.
Listen to a recording of this song, then listen to this one. I hope you'll understand what I mean.
Good luck in pursuing your dream❤
I do understand, and it makes me want to pick up the piano again, in part because playing organically and emotionally is a gift I have been told I have from the time I was five years old and began lessons. Placing my ego aside, Sakamoto is a true artist.

The song that introduced me to him. I learned about him passing away when one of my favorite korean rapper/producer sent his message that his teacher Sakamoto-sama already departed. Then saw Sakamoto-sama name as the piano performer in one of his songs (Snooze by Agust D ft. Woosung) & had a appearance to his documentary before he passed away a year after its recording.
I know everyone who is a fan of Sakamoto-sama is devastated about this news. I hope his music will stay strong in the hearts of many.
River' and colaps (of GBB) brought me here
Yup
I heard this song years ago but did not pay attention to it at that moment. One day when I struggled in the dark time, I heard this song again and then cannot control my tears. It's like the last singing from the nightingale pressed her heart closer against the rose thorn, which is quite sad but also warm. I felt like somebody hug me and got more courage to keep going.
I come back to this video every Christmas to listen to this. Merry Christmas.
YAsendai freal it was my favorite song on my iPod shuffle
happy christmas!
Same here, happy Christmas everyone!
Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas.
I came here because IVE(Kpop group) sampled this piece. it is an incredible piece.
Same here ❤❤❤
Mr Sakamoto.....thank you for this music....you take my breath away....
Shanks King Yes,he play more classics like Beethoven. So talent! So we together also a classic music lovers, don't u think? :)
Shanks King Now I start give more attention to Lang Lang. Between us....rare music just for rare people who enjoy the real beauty in life :)
Shanks King don't think its that rare to find people who like classical music as this video alone has 1.6m views soo not that rare.
Shanks King Personally I dislike Lang Lang for how he tries so hard to get close to the government and the rich ones, whereas Mr Sakamoto is always devoted in speaking for weak ones.
This was the first ever song I wanted to try learning by myself on the piano. Thank you for letting me listen to such a beautiful song. Rest In Peace Ryuichi Sakamoto.
