2001: Derek Carr's first TV interview

  • In 2013 Derek Carr is a husband, father, and preseason Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year. Back in 2001 he was a spirited 10-year-old who wasn't shy about advocating for his older brother as a Heisman Trophy candidate. Ignore the technical glitches and the green & goofy reporter, and enjoy the exuberance of a precocious young man whose development and maturation, on and off the field, has been captivating to watch.

      People forget that Dorsey was a savage in college cfb w/ miami. The equiveleant would have been the 2012 draft with Andrew Luck RG3, Tanehil, Foles coming out in one year.
      David Carr was the once in a generation talent would have been like Andrew Luck in his draft and Dorsey was like Tanehill and Grossman like a weaker RG3.
      The only problem was These guys were drafted by the worst possible teams of their era.
      Carr drafted to an expansion team, he would have originally been drafted by Detroit if Texans were added the next year.
      Ken Dorsey, had he went to draft in 2002, he would have been the #2 pick or #1 pick ; ending u pin Houston or Detroit. His descion to stay at Miami backfired on him and he slipped into 7th round going to a horrible 9er team. By the time Dorsey got his start Alex Smith was their guy... and Alex Smith was by no means better than any of these guys(Carr, Grossman, Dorsey) in college. Yet Alex Smith was a #1 pick.
      Joey Harrington who was like a Joe Flacco type QB, was picked up by Detroit
      Rex Grossman was picked up by Chicago, tho a horrible QB, still made it to a SB.
      Eric Crouch was a life jobber, nobody expected him to go far.
      But yeah, Derek Carr would have went on to do better than Ken Dorsey and David Carr and Grossman, nobody saw that coming.

    • @DontKillFriends
      @DontKillFriends 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@chibiromano5631 Gotta disagree with some of that. Dorsey didn't slip just because of that one year he stayed. He was thought be a very mediocre NFL talent potential wise at the time. That simply turned out to be true. He played poorly and was largely ineffective. If he went to a good team, he wouldn't have been great. Could he have been a mediocre player instead of a bad one? Sure, but its not about how you do in college necessarily, it's about how your skills translate to the NFL and the potential you have.

    • @DontKillFriends
      @DontKillFriends 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@chibiromano5631 Alex Smith was a much better QB than any of those guys, though maybe not in college per say (though he had an undefeated Utah team). Yes, he struggled mightily at first, but eventually became a very good NFL starter. He shouldn't have been the #1 pick sure, but Smith wouldn't have fallen out of the first round. His arm, his mobility, his release and his intellect were all massively superior to guys like Dorsey, and he had a much better career than David Carr or Rex Grossman, overall.
      Also, while saying that David Carr was viewed as thr top tier guy like Andrew Luck was is fair, but Andrew Luck was much much more talented than David Carr ever was, and instantly went to a horrible Colts team and made them relevant again.
      So overall I think you make a lot of valid points, but some of those players weren't going to quite succeed anyway. Then again, would Flacco have been a mediocre to bad QB if he went to a bad franchise like Detroit? Yes, I think that's fair. He's bigger and had good arm talent to throw the ball down the field, but he had many seasons of being a poor decision maker even with great defenses and running games to help him out.

    This is some TREMENDOUS vintage video here because David Carr is being celebrated due to his prolific years at Fresno State(42 TD's in his SR year!!!), but 10-year-old Derek steals the spotlight twice, with the praise of his big brother as a 10-year-old in 2001 and 10+ years later when he ends up following in David's footsteps by playing QB at Fresno State, becoming a pretty high draft pick in the 2014 NFL Draft and is now one of the best QB's in the NFL!! During a Raiders Sunday Night NBC game a few weeks ago, they showed 10-year-old Derek at the 2002 draft(where David was the #1 overall pick) with his family.
    Does David Carr's infant son in this video, Austin, play football?? Austin should be a junior or senior in high school at this point.

    Paul, i remember when this was originally shown on 47. I'm such a big Carr fan. Yes it started with David, who should have won the heisman trophy that year, IMO. Loved watching him play at Fresno State. I believe that David got a raw deal during the draft. Yes he was the number one draft pick, but he went to an expansion team, Texans, and he didn't have a QB who he could mentor from because of that. I am still glad that he received a SB ring with the Giants. When i heard that Derek was coming to Fresno State, i was like, "START HIM!! START HIM!!" because i KNEW he was as good as David. Didn't Derek end up beating some of his brothers records? I was an INSTA Derek Carr fan, all because of David. When it came to draft time, i was hoping and praying Derek would go to the Raiders. I told my friends that Derek would be a great fit with the Raiders. We needed a good QB, and i knew Derek was just that person. I was hoping during the same draft, that we would also get Davante Adams. I wanted those two Bulldogs on the Raiders because of the chemistry they had at State. But he was drafted to the Packers instead. I was bummed, but i knew it was a long shot. Here we are in 2022. Derek and Davante are BOTH on the Raiders. Yeah, college is different than the NFL, but i do not think the chemistry changes. I think it would be like riding a bike. Thank you so much for this great interview to of Fresno States best QB's and maybe a future HOF. #RaiderNation

      Daion Crumbley Technically, you can't make that comparison, due to the fact that David never had a line to protect his ass as does Derek. It was sad watching David play. He had potential. Eventually, he left that sorry-ass team, the Houston Texans, but it didn't matter. He was permanently traumatized! He could never reach his full potential afterwards. If you look at clips of old David Carr's Fresno State games, he plays exactly like Derek played in Fresno.
      To put it simpler, their games are a like, TOO ALIKE! One thing, which should be feared, Derek will not be the same QB as he is if it was not for his O-line. Raiders better keep paying those O-line starters $32 million every year, as they currently are, or else Derek will transform to RG3; that's bad!
