Hilariously, in an Amazon review of the P&S DVD, one reviewer describes the closing synth jingle as sounding "like a Dalek being tortured"! 😂
If only that reviewer knew that the synth was made by the original dr who music composer. I'd say it sounds more akin to a dalek completing a system check or reboot,

Peter Donaldson has the calm, disciplined voice one needs to hear in times of crisis. I'd really like his voice narrating my life in my head. Edited to add: I know we were taught to hate on Wikipedia in school, but it's not the enemy! It's a wealth of resources on a subject matter, and a great place to start researching. If I could only access one website for the rest of my life, it would be Wikipedia.

Rest in peace, Mr. Donaldson. Kind of eerie that I was re-watching this episode, and wanted to see when he stopped working for the BBC, only to find out he died today.

It's worth saying two things. One, the advice given in Protect and Survive was later revealed, in the late '90s, to be totally useless.
Secondly, doing the robot dance like the guy at 4:15 DEFINITELY wouldn't help.
These shorts should be in a mod for the Fallout games.

On the one hand I never thought I'd live to see the day where we have to fear nuclear war AGAIN. On the other hand, damn, these shorts are entertaining, in a grim yet kitschy sort of way.

A couple nitpickings:- The SMPTE color bars are only used in NTSC countries (read: most of North America, Japan, and South Korea, among others). The UK uses PAL like most of the world and thus use such test cards as Test Card F or the Phillips PM-whatever pattern.- It's BBC Radio 4, not BBC 4 (which is a digital TV channel).- Signing off is referred to as "closing down."

Quite right!! It's Radio 4. Actually pre late 1960s it would have been under the old name "The BBC Home Service". BTW did you know that in the early days of the WTBS they actually had entertainment programs on to keep the peoples minds off what was actually going on outside.. "Round the Horne" was one of the programs that was listed for use in the WTBS, however the entertainment part was shelved to allow for more news and information to be broadcast.
My great grandkids' school had a shelter in the basement of the school hall. There was canned food, and the school held regular drills to get all the students into the shelter. The school was across the street from Midway Airport. I expect it would have been a target. It's doubtful the kids would have survived a nuclear explosion a mile or less from the school.
Our school had one under the sports hall, it wasnt for the kids though, it was a command and control bunker for the mayor, police chief etc. Would have been funny watching the bunkers occupants trying to keep 1500+ kids from smashing their way in if the siren (also on top of the school building) went off.
We were about 5 miles from an airbase so would probably be screwed anyway, shelter or not. Infact I recall having to plot the blast/heat/fallout radii for various yields detonated where the (cnd loving) teachers thought most likely Soviet targets on an o.s map, so each kid could see how fucked they were at school or at their house. Spoiler: No mater where I was, I would have died horribly, so great job there teachers. Showing us `threads` didnt help either.

The way "Protect And Survive" wraps around the family reminds me of metal-bending equipment sometimes seen on "How It's Made."
The synth at the ending of the videos sounds like something the Devil himself would play on his synthesizer.

For anyone wondering: the video got flagged in July for reasons still unknown. Nothing has been changed between this posting and the original--I was confused enough to check Benny boy's Twitter to see if he explained it.
That said, this is one of my favorite episodes. Glad it won't be going away any time soon.

+kargaroc386 They'd have had days if not weeks to prepare for an attack. It's highly unlikely the Russians would have attacked out of the blue without some sort of political / diplomatic build up.

kargaroc386 This video is quite scary. I remember back in the 70's being old enough to understand that I could die in a nuclear war at any moment but not old enough to understand the politics and why this was highly unlikely.
Looking back I also realise that in various directions I lived 7 miles from the centre of one of the UK's biggest cities, 3 miles from it's airport and 3 miles from a private airport attached to a factory that built military aircraft. Basically I'd have been dead 3 times over if war had broken out. Which is a happy thought...

threads is one scary movie, also these vids Protect n survive were used in two tribes. frankie goes to hollywood.
+JRushPixel I used to believe that, however to avoid any potential copyright issues the band instead found the voice actor from the videos and had him read from a slightly revised script. Great single from an under appreciated LP.

The protect and survive intro reminds me of Fallout 4's S.P.E.C.I.A.L advertisements.

I don't find these protect and serve shorts to be any more frightening than watching Run Hide Fight instructional videos these days featuring young school children. I guess I have a morbid fascination with such calm instructions for situations in which unrehearsed panic can be deadly. No locked door is really going to protect you against someone with a gun who wants in, especially if the kids are all on the floor lined up against a wall. Seeing a kindergarten teacher explain in a way that won't frighten four year olds that someone could walk into the school with a high powered automatic weapon for no reason so they have to sit in their superhero cave silently is quite unsettling to watch.
I imagine the Sovie... er.. Russians would be using neutron weapons, in order to preserve everything but the residents. Perhaps some EMPs as well.
+Dr. Gun If I were them, I'd have leading missiles that shout a message "It's OK to come out now". That way people would come out from behind their doors and suitcases full of sand to become viable targets for nuclear weapons.

7:12 - Threads is the grimmest movie I have ever watched in my life, It is fucking horrific. The movie isn't bad it's just that the subject matter and it's portrayal is extremely unsettling.
It achieved its purpose then.

You might look at the Canadian version of this, 11 Steps to Survive. It’s available on TH-cam, and the info in it is clearer than Protect and Survive.
I'm pretty sure at one point you considered riffing the entire series. Though I could see it getting a bit tiresome. Either way, I'd watch it.
