Thaïs is an opera by Mr Jules Massenet inspired from a novel by the great French writer Anatole France. Jules Massenet was born in 1842 in a small village (Montaud) nowadays included in my birth town, Saint-Etienne, 55 km in the south-west of Lyon.
Renaud Capucon is so underrated. Thanks to Augustin Hadelich for including him in the "Bach Chaccone for 14 Violinists" video where I first witnessed him play!
It is the same version that all contemporary violinist play however Fritz Kreisler is clearly not the same. The sound here is very predictable and it is not crossed with competing phrases that are untrustworthy and yet they are all together an work. This is instead all about controlling one sound.
Vibrato parfois un peu lent, interprétation parfois lâché, trop désincarnée sans doute pas assez empreinte de sensualité comme cela le demande. Renaud Capuçon, plus grand violoniste français du moment ? Écoutez donc, par exemple, Olivier Charlier l'ancien ou David Grimal le jeune 😉
