At the end of this episode Kepler finally remembered the punchline to this joke: “Look, when you’ve got a pig that good, you don’t eat it in a single sitting.” In the joke, although the pig does a massive amount of work for the farmer, the farmer still exploits it in a way that is beyond reasonable (ie. Eating parts of its body) and is basically taking advantage of it in any aspect he can. (I suspect that the reason the farmer hasn’t eaten any other parts of it is because he wants the pig to keep doing his chores. Essentially keeping it alive because it is still generating profit for him.) This exploitation directly parallels the situation of the Hephaestus crew (as well as most employees we’ve seen of Goddard) in that they are exploited by a company that does not care for their physical or psychological health. The crew is being forced to stay on the Hephaestus, against their will and even after they’ve suffered through major traumatic events, simply because they were the ones who discovered the alien signals and have the potential to create a source of profit for Goddard
Plus, all of that is what the pig has to do to not just get slaughtered with the rest of the pigs. If that pig stops doing the work of 5 farmhands it’s porkchop time for it.
i love that the business man is eiffel and kepler is the farmer in the story. that really adds to it !! (also jacobi and maxwell cast as the wife and kids sakhafhakjh)
