Great tips, but EVEN BETTER video style! Longer action sequences .vs the quick cut in-the-chair talking points. Great job, and thanks for the fantastic lesson!
I work on my dinks, drops and resets about every day but I am frustrated by how few people in rec play use them. These are finesse shots that take some effort to perfect and few people want to put in the sweat equity to add them to their game. Thanks for the tips.
But why are YOU frustrated? If they don’t practice these shots while you do, you have an upper hand against them. If when you play these finesse shots in a rec game and a lot of times the outcome is not to your satisfaction, maybe you should figure out why that is the case.
That's because pickleball requires neither effort nor finesse. Consider your 'sport' and those who take this 'game' up. I would suggest taking up a sport where people actually make an effort and have a sliver of skill and coordination. Just a thought.
Excellent explanation. I've seen others say to follow through to the other shoulder on the drop but I prefer your straight line approach and see players use it successfully. Where to place the drop during doubles would also be helpful. Not sure if you mentioned to have a much looser grip for drops/resets/dinks.
Great video. This is the shot that sets pickleball, because of the kitchen rule, aside from tennis. I'm a pretty good 'basher' but to be a real pickleball player I wanna improve this one :) I think I definitely underestimated how much arc I gotta put on it.
As usual, very good stuff, Connor! Never thought of the weight transfer as "rock forward." Excellent! I like how often you include drills to work on the technique. Keep up the good work!
Yes, I think drills are so important. Trying to work on things like dinking during a game is very difficult because there it may be many shots or even points before you (and not your partner) get more than one dink in a row so you can develop consistency and habits.
In rec play (around 3.0 and below), the drop simply isn't effective. Either you miss the exact landing, giving the opponent an attackable ball or even when perfectly placed it causes no trouble for a weaker player. IMO, the best approach in rec play is a low top spin drive to the middle or to the feet of the player approaching the net. Even if you don't win the point outright, they can only hit a defensive shot back to you.
Love the tips, thanks! Unrelated question, your paddle looks so much larger than mine (Engage Pursuit MX) and those I see out in my Rec Play. Long & Wide. Are my eyes tricking me or is that one made special?
Drop your paddle. Lock your wrist. “Block” the ball and let their power bounce off your paddle. With a little practice on your paddle angle you can reset their crazy power top-spin drives and earn your way up to the net.
When I do a drop from the baseline, I'm finding my ball is bouncing too high and the opponent has his way with the ball. And for sure I lose the majority of the points. Is there something I'm doing wrong with my drops, or do I need to finesse my drops even more?
firm wrist, loose wrist! so hard to always know which to use. sometimes when I just try to punch the “banged ball” back sometimes it just drops dead in front of me. I noticed that you are straight in your elbow when resetting these balls, is that an important factor? some teachers say just absorb the speed of the paddle but for me the ball often just drops dead in front of me so usually I have to press forward, straightening the elbow . any advice?
Hitting a 003 with too much arc (but that still lands in the kitchen) will bounce high enough for a quick speed up for your opponent. I've played many people who hit these and its easy to put one at their feet while they are approaching the net. What would be your advice to avoid the ball bouncing too high here?
I know I'm in the minority by using the "ping pong" grip. It works for me in most areas of my game. I watch Callan Dawson when I need inspiration to stick with this grip since it really helps with my blown out elbow. Connor your videos are very spot on for learning the game and improving.
I'm with you on the 'ping pong' grip. I also use a lot of 'wristy' type shots both forehand and backhand rolls. I think it's very hard for people to learn those shots from scratch... Have fun!
@@wendellsmith2865 I'll switch to conventional every so often but try to stick with the ping pong. A high ball gives me lots of time the change grips for a smash.
I have never played on a real pickleball court, only my highschools PE class with really disproportionate courts. I just think watching these videos are interesting

Yep. Rec play might as well be called Smashball most of the time

Yeah, this is something I want to get better at. But, no one likes doing them. I even had someone say he hates people that dink. I was confused lol
I have watched this video many times and it has helped me get better. Thanks bro! Third shot drops is the biggest tip I have implemented.

You're soooooo good at this, young man! Thank you so much.
fantastic job on the outro of these vids - getting viewers to binge - hyped to see the channel continue to grow
Thank you Cody!!

that was exceptional. fast. right to the point. great descriptions. i'm all in dude.
Awesome, thank you!

You are so welcome!
This is so helpful. Your videos are well-made, btw. Well thought out and easy to watch.
Excellent video - One of the very best I have seen!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Man, I love this guy!
Conner, can you do a video on playing against the 6’5”ish and up players?
Burning question (maybe do a video on this): how do you execute a drop when your opponent hits a deep, low drive on the second shot? Emphasis on low!
Drop your paddle. Lock your wrist. “Block” the ball and let their power bounce off your paddle. With a little practice on your paddle angle you can reset their crazy power top-spin drives and earn your way up to the net.

that is exactly why a lot of people don’t do the drop because if it’s high the opponent puts it away
So very helpful! Thanks so much.
You are so welcome!
Thank you 🙌🏼
Another great set of tips.

I always come to these videos for the "what not to do" shots
awesome videos thank you!!!!
Thank you!!
I love this dude
Can you provide more details doing the drop shot on the backhand?
have you tried a backhand slice (opposite of topspin) the backspin helps is bounce lower too
make a gentle pushing motion with your shoulder and elbow while leaning/stepping into the ball; keep paddle swing to a minimum
Hitting a 003 with too much arc (but that still lands in the kitchen) will bounce high enough for a quick speed up for your opponent. I've played many people who hit these and its easy to put one at their feet while they are approaching the net. What would be your advice to avoid the ball bouncing too high here?
hit a third with less arc and more spin and dont move up to the line unless you hit a good drop
This. is great!
Appreciate your pickleball tips! Thank you!
You bet!
Wouldn't those drops be blistered on the return?

can you please tell us what is a ping pong grip, I know the Continental and the eastern grip or semi western
@@sunsioux444 Watch any Callan Dawson video or still image. It's choked up all the way to the paddle face with fingers on the face.

What the importance of hitting it into the kitchen from anywhere??
i don’t understand this either. i thought if i hit it in the kitchen, they could obliterate it😂
You basically put your opponent in a situation where they can only dink it back and not hit it with power like they could if you hit it deeper.
I’m struggling to get power and stability out of the 003. Any recommendations on lead weight placement and amount of ways I should use it?
get a crbn. That thing is way too bouncy for drops.
lead tape around the outside for stability
love this guy
Appreciate that!
What the best way to defend against someone who slams it down to your feet?
Thanks!
Thank you!!!
Great teaching! I learned a lot. Thanks!

What you don't have a backhand?
Ugh you called me out so bad. I get so lazy and flat footed on my drops. It’s the easiest hardest shot
3.0 PRISON. lol.
Could you slow down your tongue? Perhaps try practicing a bit of speech dinking?
noted 🤣🤣🤣
You can adjust playback speed in settings. Pacing was appropriate to me.
But how do you do it when it’s driven to you?
