Thank you for sharing this. I had no idea you can cut back zucchini. I also use mostly homemade compost and I get great crops. Thank you for the information on the bad insects. I saw the brown last year and I wasn't sure what caused it. I appreciate you mentioning zucchini since last was my first time growing. Seems us home gardeners are learning all the time.
I grew 2 eggplants for the first time last year about 25' apart with some stringbeans on the outside and followed your method. They had no pest or fungal issues and were so beautiful/perfect. This was a confirming video for me, as well as some new detail tips! I think it helps not to plant close to each other because they may be a bigger attractor/target/contaminator.

Thanks so much for the information Gary. No one ever talks (at least I have not heard) about planting in succession when it comes to zucchini or squash. I love both of these vegetables, but either the vine borer or the dreaded squash bug destroys my plants. I have two zucchini plants in 20 gallon grow bags. I really appreciate your teaching style. Gary, I was so excited when you starting talking about pollination, but I didn’t hear what to do IF your female and male flowers don’t open at the same time. My female flowers don’t seem to open, so I have to force it open and hand pollinate. Which I haven’t seen if this is successful. Any other tips?

Won't that zucchini plant be long dead before the granular organic fertilizer becomes available to the plant? It seems like that side dressing is fertilizer that's going to help next year's garden
Microbes, especially in healthy soil, multiple and digest pretty fast. As they do, some becomes ready early, some takes much longer. So it will help this plant but that is why we also use water soluble fertilizer. A lot will be ready in August for new plants that replace them. Question: I've had two Black Beauty plants die, one after the other. Healthy transplants planted in a huge pot with good drainage. All of my cucumbers, tomatoes, and every other plant in my container garden are thriving. All have the same soil (composted manure/coir/perlite) amended with bone meal and granular prior to planting, mulched with coco coir chips. The zucchinis keep drying out and dying, starting with older leaves. They're well watered, pH is in range. Balanced fish/kelp fertilizer (approx 2-1.5-2) weekly- I co-plant densely with flowers & herbs in grow bags, so the other plants need the regular feedings. I'm so confused by the zucs, though. The only difference is the bottom 1/3 of the zuc pot is filled with coco chips as filler. We don't have vine borers/squash bugs where I am. Any thoughts/suggestions?

Quick question! So should I wait to cut back the stems til I start seeing flowers or should I do it before? I have a few larger leaves but not sure if the under leaves are getting sun. When it's really hot outside I am indoors. Also what time of the day is the best time to prune. Last year I pruned my tomatoes early evening
Under leaves that are well shaded can be removed when you want. Early evening is good as the get some recovery time. The Rusted Garden Vegetable Seeds & Home Garden Supplies: www.therustedgarden.com Earn 15% and become a TRG Affiliate for our seed & garden shop Sign Up Here: bit.ly/4aarkDD
Fertilizers arent much on increasing organic matter. But they give the nutrients. You really want compost, leaf mold, even peat moss, mixed through the soil. @@THERUSTEDGARDENI dusted the stems last night. Hoping for the best. The alternative would be to plant late. However, then I deal with more disease pressure and less garden space.
So help me get this correct. Water zucchini, every other day? Is that the same for tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers? Does the baking soda recipe work for all plants or just zucchini?
Watering is complicated based on temps and plant size so there isn't an exact way. You can go with every other day. I’ve been playing with the an adjustable hose sprayer ( I think it’s called chameleon) anyways if learned you can get high strength peroxide and working on a right amount of neem, also dish soap.. I haven’t killed any plants and it’s really convenient to do. Two things.. you HAVE TO HAVE 12% peroxide to use it AND use it up within a few hours as the Peroxide degrades into water and oxygen fairly quickly. A side note.. have you ever observed plants growing crazy after a rain storm.. after spraying I see this and I think it maybe the oxygen going into the soil after the peroxide breaks down (btw it breaks down after spraying I think in less than an hour).
Thats a great tip. You do want to get the right ratio with peroxide and test spray. The Rusted Garden Vegetable Seeds & Home Garden Supplies: www.therustedgarden.com Earn 15% and become a TRG Affiliate for our seed & garden shop Sign Up Here: bit.ly/4aarkDD

I have 6 yellow squash plants and 6 zuchini. We had quite a few come in a month ago. Now every yellow squash that forms ends up stopping growing at about 3 or 4 inches long and rots. Yes it got pollinated. A green zuchini hasnt set in weeks. Its like they all just completely stopped. The last yellow that was edible stopped growing at 4 inches long and sat there and matured while we kept waiting for it to get bigger. It was small with huge seeds inside and thick skin on just a tiny fruit. Have no clue what is going on and nobody seems to have an answer. Cant even search it. Not a single article about fruit staying so small yet still ripening. So discouraging.

I am still learning for sure.

Hello Garry, all my plants are in containers and the only organic matter is fertilizer
What should I put ,compost or water soluble fertilizer?
Fertilizers arent much on increasing organic matter. But they give the nutrients. You really want compost, leaf mold, even peat moss, mixed through the soil. For now I would just use water soluble fertilizer and improve the soil at the end of the season.

Always test spray the baking soda on all new plants but in theory you can use it on any plant.
