    Hi from England
    It's an interesting design that clearly shows there's a transition still taking place at the time that was made from overhead flat belt drives to electric drives...
    Interestingly enough a UK company (DENBIGH) still made an old flat belt design (what you refer to in the USA as a "camelback" design) upto and including 1975...
    You can spot the back end of the production run of these as they all have a cast bracket for the AC drive...
    But it's clear with them they have their origins in the early 1900s...
    Its a nice piece is that there...
    I've several bench mounted flat belt drills myself...

    Just picked up a similar one today. Mine has the motor hanging off the bracket that holds the intermediate pulleys on yours. It has a V belt and I think it’s a bit of a Frankenstein but it works. I plan to pretty it up and it will be my working drill press in my home shop. Funny but I was planning gloss black with gold too, it just seems to want to be that. Great work, I hope mine comes out half as nice.

    • @Slydertek
      @Slydertek 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the info. I just found one in the trash. Mine is a bit like yours, Frankensteined over the years. Also have the V belt and it's a straight belt from motor pulley to drill pulley. The only thing is the original motor bracket must have been trashed, cause they fabricated one with flat bar to hold the motor. Motor looks somewhat original (at least period correct) by the look and nameplate. I don't know if I could find another drill pulley, cause mine is in a bad shape. Would like to know what you turn yours into after restoring.

    Nice refurbish. A couple of suggestions. Need to rotate the motor end castings so the oilers and in the up position. Flip the twin idler pulleys 180 so that the bolt tightens from the “50e” side, easier to snug up the belt when the screw is working with you not against you. There is also a return spring apparently missing to keep the quill from drifting south.

    • @benstown7209
      @benstown7209 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wayne P you are right on the money. I only realized there was supposed to be a return spring up top after the watching some other videos, and good call on the idler pulley too. I'm not sure about the oilers though- they are reservoir cups with a wick inside. There is a spring that lightly holds the wick up against the shaft and the wick picks up oil from the cup.

    • @waynep9592
      @waynep9592 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@benstown7209 Your call on the oilers. I have one too, although slightly different. I suspect mine is all original. When I got it, it was pretty cruddy with oil, grease and dirt, so I went over it with “Purple” cleaner, and low and behold the original paint was in pretty good shape (dark machinery gray), so I left it be and kept the patina. The motor appears original too and operates fine, a 1/3 HP, I can date to 1928. The difference is mine has a boss on the back of the column and a hole for the motor shaft, an outboard bearing. The original switch is a lever action on a nickel plated plate. I’m amazed it still works, and you’d never find a replacement. I have to go your way if it broke. The whole drill came mounted on a 1X12 clear pine. I knew it was old when I measured the 1X and it was actually 1 inch thick. Well, my guess is that yours is slightly older as they made a mod for the motor shaft support on mine. Good luck with yours, you should try your hand on something bigger now like that lathe…lol

    Nice work I wasn’t sure about the gloss black but the gold lettering and brass switch plate sets it off nice. Subbed and liked. BTW when you cleaned the other old motor did you use anything to degrease the inside? The coils/winding in particular? I have an old motor I’d like to recondition. Thanks

    • @benstown7209
      @benstown7209 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Cory- I was afraid to use anything on the old motor windings because the insulation was so deteriorated and brittle. I just lightly brushed it off and blew it out with low pressure compressed air.
