I love this idea! I haven’t been on BookTube even a year, but I want to remember this for an anniversary video for someday. Lol

Absolutely, it's a fun video to do :)

I didn't realise we joined Booktube in the same year. This is certainly an interesting anniversary video - and an idea I may steal for myself, if thou doesn't mind - I rather enjoyed hearing what books made it to your top 20 of the last 4 years. Last year, I re-read a book that had previously been my favourite book of the year only to DNF it because I no longer liked it. It is my aim one day to read Anthony Trollope, because I feel like we would get on. Congratulations on 4 years, I hope you've had a superbly marvellous time.

    • @katiejlumsden
      @katiejlumsden  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Do please steal away :) (I already stole it from others XD) I do think you'd rather get on with Anthony Trollope, especially his Barsetshire series.

@@katiejlumsden :D Then steal I will. This is the year I will tackle Anthony Trollope then. I write this here to hold myself accountable.

Congratulations!!👏🏻👏🏻 I really like your channel, I’ve learned a lot and I’ve discovered great readings!
From your list of 20 top books I’ve only read five... But I’ve most of them noted down.
    Thank you👍

These videos are so much fun. It's such a fantastic way to see how the true favourite books are the one which stand the test of time. I think it's definitely a good thing that you had such a large all-time favourite list by the end of this. You've obviously been picking wisely! :)

Congratulations on the milestone. I'm a new subscriber, after seeing your channel from Natalie's latest video where you talked about being inspired by this video. I can totally see why! I am impressed by the depth and breadth of your book favorites. There are a lot here that I also love, and so many that I will add to my ever expanding TBR. Thanks!

A list from the Goon Squad has been on my shelf an embarressing amount of time and I still haven't picked it up :( We have Always Lived in the Castle is brilliant, it'd definitely make it onto my list. Fingersmith is wonderful, I'm hoping to pick up Affinity by Sarah Waters this month and I can't wait! I really need to pick up Maurice, it sounds amazing :) I really need to pick up The Woodlanders and Desperate Remedies.
Lady Susan really surprised me. It isn't one people discuss a lot but really they should as the characters are so good.
This was such a fun video!

This is such a great video!! I'll definitely look back to your list when I need some more recommendations. I've only been making videos on booktube for a very short time, and in that time my reading tastes have changed a lot! When I look back on my favorites of 2018 I think, "Why did I include that book and not this one" or "Did I really like it that much to put it on my favorites list?" I think it's so hard to narrow it down, and I give you a lot of credit for being able to cut it down to 20 books haha :) What's funny is that the books that stay with me the most are often the classics. In some cases more modern books as well, but I think there is something about classic literature that is simply timeless.

Loved hearing this and the way you get to the final list . I only really increases my reading pace last year so in terms of favourite books of all time it's hard to judge. Give me a few more years and I'll probably have a better idea Xxx I picked up Reservoir 13 recently from a charity shop so even more excited about it now 😉❤️

Thank you for this great video, Katie. I can’t imagine the time that went into this. From your list, the book that’s stayed with me the longest is The Odd Women. The two books from the last two years I can’t get out of my mind are both non fiction - Educated, by Tara Westover, and Bad Blood, by John Carreyrou. This was a special video, Katie!

It’s so funny the way some books stick with you and others don’t. I read An Artist of the Floating World by Kazuo Ishiguro last fall and I wasn’t sure how well I liked it at the time. But in retrospect it was one of the best books I read last year. I need to start doing “best of” lists every year so I can look back at my favorite books later and see if they’ve held up!

I liked this video a lot and it seems I don't mind you reading out
    lists :D
I put a lot of books you mentioned on my wishlist now and really want to get into Emely St. John Mandel's and Anthony Trollope's works.
May I have a guess on which scene you didn't like that much in The wise man's fear? Felurian? 😂
(and btw sry if my English is bad. I rarely ever write anything in English)

Choosing favorites is hard! I went back and looked at my Goodreads lists from 2016, 2017, and 2018. The books I'd consider my favorites (in no particular order) are:
The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz
A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki
The Essex Serpent by Sarah Perry
    Nutshell by Ian McEwan
The Pursuit of Love by Nancy Mitford
Never Mind by Edward St Aubyn
Lincoln in the Bardo by George Saunders
    Ghostwritten by David Mitchell
The City & the City by China Mieville
If I had to choose one as my absolute favorite, it's probably A Tale for the Time Being, but Oscar Wao is right up there, too.
Contenders for this year so far:
Once Upon a River by Diane Setterfield
Milkman by Anna Burns (I am currently reading this, but I have the feeling it's going to be my favorite book of the year. It's ticking ALL the boxes for me.)

I like Doctor Thorne, but for me it's a bit more conventional, which is one of the reasons why I like it less. But the whole series is just amazing :D

This isn't as a criticism but I am interested in the pronunciation of St John Mandel? Isn't St John in a name sometimes pronounced more like "singent" (sp?) wasn't there a scene in a 'rom-com' movie (possibly 4 Weddings & Funeral?) at a wedding where it's mentioned?
(no idea how Mrs Mandel or Canadians, in general, say it)
Otherwise, some good reading choices? :-)

    • @katiejlumsden
      @katiejlumsden  5 ปีที่แล้ว

So, I pretty much just pronounce it as they tend to pronounce St John Rivers's name in adaptations of Jane Austen XD Sinjen, effectively. Apparently Emily St John Mandel herself pronounces it as 'Saint John' anyway, but I forever have Jane Austen on the brain.
