  • In this vlog I discuss the historical, cultural, and practical reasons behind the tradition of Thai people having more than one nickname. I explore the significance of Thai nicknames, their gender specificity, the process of choosing them, their meanings, and their role in daily life.

My wife's legal name is Warunee (Thai name). Her parents were Chinese and gave her a Chinese nickname, Foi, and an English nickname, Jen. Depending on who we are visiting, they know her as either Foi, or Jen, I find out when I get there.

Wow, who knew? Evidently, Ray does/did. I had no idea at all that the Thais have such tradition on this matter. IN all my years in and out of the Kingdom. I just figured that proper Thai names are so bloody long that they themselves just wanted an easier way of identifying each other on a dally basis.. Excellent content Ray and not knowing about this leaves me thinking I have been dumber than a bag of hammers!

Your figuring does make sense Graham, just incorrect. I too did not know until curiosity caught me.

Because they wear them out. I give them my own as that's the best way to keep up I find.

A mate of mine once call me a Champion. I asked his " why did you call me that? Because I've got a head like a spark plug" ????

I was told that there is a demon that collects perfect children during the night so parents often gave their children not so nice nicknames to avoid the demon.....hence many have names such as pig (moo), horse (ma), chicken (gai).

My actual name is Ian but my parents called me Bill (middle name is William) since the day I was born. Almost know one knows me as Ian except I have to put it on formal documents. I've had to explain myself on thousands of occasions. A bit of a pain in the ass to be honest! LOL.

I was told, but have forgotten the meaning of the following two Thai nicknames: Boom and Porn. Can you please describe the meaning of these two names? Thanks. 🙏🏼

"Boom" means dimples, "Porn" means "blessing"

Your discussion was repetitious. But the topic was an important one.
