  • The National Civil War Museum is pleased to present, “The African American Oral History Project: Part One.” This one hour and eight minute presentation features the voices of African Americans from the American Civil War through Reconstruction, to modern times. The video presentation highlights the fascinating story of former slave and later United States Congressman Robert Smalls of South Carolina. In addition to the national story of Robert Smalls, the film also brings to light the personal struggles and triumphs of many others in the African American community located in south central Pennsylvania.
The museum wishes to thank all of the sponsors listed at the end of the film for their support of this important project.

I of course just found out about Robert Small and came to see what I could learn. This is a wonderful piece of history and a familys history. Really enjoyed it so much. Thanks for sharing and I'm on my way to find part 2. Blessings to the families

I would like to encourage you guys to look up some of the histories of Africa outside of the slave trade: Kush, Timbuktu, Benin, Mansa Musa I, Queen Nzinga, Shaka Zulu, Carthage, The Masai, The Kandake Queens, The Ashanti, etc.

I agree. I would encourage you to read more into slavery. Their are several books about the culture that was developed by our ancestors. Many of the commonalities we share can only be explained through our common experience.

What a wonderful video. Every American should watch this and see how far the modern demigods have left America and Americans a shattered and divided peoples. The African American community especially has been robbed of their accomplishments and contributions to this great nation. The most devastating is the broken family and the loss of their connection to the Christian Church, which gave them the moral courage to survive many difficult years,

It's a need for this history to be taught to all blacks. Of the struggle.

It makes me proud to be a Republican, knowing the rich history of black Republicans and their accomplishments.
