      They basically did the electrical isolation right, then ruined it to make the board 5mm narrower. The proper design would have the opto isolator next to the Y capacitor so the isolation gap runs directly under it. Instead they shifted it lengthwise on the board so the extra tracks runs too close to the live mains tracks. Casing was big enough for a wider, shorter board, forcing internal examination to spot the danger.

    • @lacunate
      @lacunate 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Would you mind explaining a bit about the optoisolator's / interference suppression cap's purpose and why exactly he was angry? I'm guessing the aforementioned cap is to reduce noise from something in the circuit [switching PS?], and maybe the path being so long allows for noise to couple in(?) but past that I'm shamefully uneducated and have never even heard of an optoisolator. ..

    • @tw11tube
      @tw11tube 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@lacunate The power supply should convert the high voltage from the mains that is dangerous and can kill you when you touch it in an unfortunate way into safe low voltage that can tickle you, but most likely won't ever kill you. So it is *very* important to keep mains voltage (called "primary") and output voltage (called "secondary") apart. An important concept is called "clearance" which is the distance of PCB tracks that are connected to mains from those tracks that are connected to the output voltage. It is accepted that the clearance is supposed to be 3 millimeters at the very minimum, but 5 to 10 millimeters is definitely better. You need the distance because the PCB is not a perfect insulator, and the mains voltage might creep into the ouptut voltage. This is espacially true if there are some high voltage spikes (with that I mean pulses that are 1000 to 1500 volts) on the mains, which could break through the insulating paint on the PCB and burn it away. Such spikes do happen. And if the paint is burned at some point, and you keep operating that "germicidal lamp", er, dicso light in a diso-like environment with fog machines around, it is possible that residues of the fig fluid condense on the board and form a conductive layer that makes the output dangerous to touch. In this supply, there are tracks connected to the secondary side that get *extremely* close (I guess around one to 1.5 millimeters) to connections on the primary side, which makes this supply dangerous, especially if you connect an external controller via DMX, or just if some wire inside that thing touches the metal case. This is why Clive got mad - especially because the distance between primary and secondary side is quite good at all other places of the supply. So they really tried to make a safe PCB, and then they messed it up completely.
      This supply has three components that are connected to both the mains voltage side and the (supposedly) safe output voltage:
      1) the transformer. It converts the input voltage into a magnetic field, and then convertes the magnetic field into the output voltage. There (should be) no electric conductivity between the input and output voltage. The quality of the isolation of these transformers is often extremely unexpressive (that's an euphemism for: dangerously low). See videos from DiodeGoneWild about cheap dodgy USB power supplies. He disassembles the transformers in those supplies and analyses how far the mains-connected and output-connected wires are really away from each other.
      2) the "interference suppression cap". The power supply works by making a high frequency voltage (likely around 100.000 to 300.000 Hz in this supply) out of mains voltage, and sending the high frequency through the transformer. The basic idea is that a transformer needs to send a whole "half-wave" (the time where the polarity of the AC voltage does not change) at once. So the longer the half wave is, or the higher the input voltage is, the more magnetic field is created inside the transformer. This means the transformer needs to be bigger to handle lower lower frequencies or higher voltages. We can't easily lower the voltage, but we can easily in increase the frequency by a couple of thouands using modern electronics, which allows a very small transformer. Because the transformer is a very small device with wires and a bit of insulation between them, it also behaves as a capacitor, and transfers the high frequency stuff to the secondary side. The secondary side is connected to a lot of devices and wires, and behaves as antenna that sends this high frequency as radio waves into the environment. That's forbidden, so you need to take the high frequency away. The way you typically do that is to use a capacitor that conducts high frequency much better than the unintended capacitor in the transformer, and connect that to a place that is able to safely dispose of the high frequency. This is often one of the mains connections, or protective earth. It is very important that this capacitor does not allow lethal currents from the primary side to the secondary side, even when it is mistreated with high voltage pulses or breaks down of old age. That's why you must use a capacitor that conforms to some safety standard in this place. If the capacitor has been tested to be safe enough, it can be certified as "class Y".
      3) the optoisolator. This is a small plastic box with 4 connections. Two of them are connected to an internal infrared LED that lights up if you send current through them, and the other two are connected to an internal light detector. These components are inside the case, so the light detector only receives light from the internal LED, but not from the environment. The LED is connected to a voltage sensor on the secondary side and lights up when the voltage at the ouput of the supply is highe enough. The light detector is connected to the primary side and tells the control chip to send less energy into the transformer. Think of it light a car going downhill: If there were no brake, the car would accelerate so much that it will get to fast, and finally kill you. You need to push the brake a bit when you are fast enough. The LED is like the brake pedal, the optoisolater like the brake line that transfers the pressure to the actual brakes and the photodetector is like the caliper that actually pushes the brake pads to the brake discs. You would never want to touch the brake discs youself, not just because they are out of reach, but because they get dangerously hot, and apply a dangerous force to you, so you need something to separate the dangerous wheels from the safe pedal. In this supply, the "brake" information is transferred through the optoisolator.

      @@lacunate The optoisolator (optocoupler) is okay, it's it's location that's the problem, its secondary pins (meant to be a safe voltage) are very close to the high voltage side of the transformer. That could allow the high voltage on the input to the power supply reach the low voltage output, if this was a phone charger your usb cable might be at 100's of volts.

      @@tw11tube Thank you very much. I'm glad I scrolled through the comments before Clive called me a 'twat'!?
      My initial reaction was 'what's wrong with an optoisolator'? My recollection was that they are rated 1kv isolation at a minimum? They are what you use to isolate a digital circuit from the 'cruel world' (simplified for brevity...) in many control situations (or, at least they were, back in the '90's) but I admit, I didn't immediately 'cop-on' to the physical isolation problem. I'm a bit embarrassed now! I thought I was 'shit-hot' at one time or at least considered capable enough...when nobody could sort a problem in some (very expensive) control systems, often on Oil and Gas rigs, the company sent me! I had a 100% success rate.
      Spookily enough, I once identified an intermittent failure (the worst kind) using a UV light...one particular circuit board had been replaced three times (on an Oil rig, imagine the costs and the penalties?)...by the second return, I was 'on it', the rejected board worked perfectly and I personally tested and vetted the third...three months later another miscellaneous fault notification (evil evil intermittent faults) and I had been all through a similar system and had no problems, faults or theories...no 'ah-aha!' moments. So off to the heli-port, away to the rig, seated beside the baleful head-honcho who was taking control and made it clear that he didn't like 'paddies' (hey it was a fact of life in the UK at that time, paddies were thick?). Long story (already) short, I knew the circuits, I knew they were good, I knew the last one was good so I went entirely through the system (just like had been done before me twice now) and there was nothing wrong. I have a great disdain for 'board jockeys' but I began to rule out the circuits and look instead to the connections between them (with 'boss-arsehole' breathing down my neck..) I had brought the last 'failed' circuit with me and I noticed the conformal coating looked a bit 'ragged' So I examined the latest one, again, it looked kinda amateurish? So I begged an ultraviolet light from the tech/security guys.....lo and behold, conformal coating all over the gold-plated connectors?! Seems like a certain well-intention-ed 'engineer' had told the guys to spray any new circuits being delivered? Without any masks? I 'hard-wired the connections to the main controller, not a problem since.
      I hope my story is equal to a coterie of engineers who have been there, seen it, done it......you auld bastards!

      @@Incognitus-Umbra Why not a double slit metal plate to split the spectrum and a piece of B/W wide spectrum film to capture it. Plus a quartz lens to direct the light to the slit. Optionally use an uncoated CCD sensor chip instead of the film. Use a few separately bought traditional single line LEDs and a quartz lamp to test and scale the result.

      @@johncrowerdoe5527 I think I've suggested before on another of these videos to use a known UVC led as a sensor, as it should create current when exposed to a similar wavelength but again not my area and I'm more than happy to be corrected plus that is an oversimplification as a given device may emmit more than one wavelength, however if I were doing this for a business or institution and not as a mad science one off at my bench then I would want some CYA with a certified Analyzer

      @@Incognitus-Umbra An UVC diode sensor doesn't report an actual spectrum. A double slit would avoid aberrations from specific glass types and is a quite traditional instrument for the job. Using separately bought known spectrum sources to test provides proper CYA calibration, preferably with a known pure substance listed in the scientific literature. Uses beyond confirming fraudulent lamps is measuring RA for good lamps and identifying unknown substances.

I would be very concerned about the possibility of it resulting in long term damage like lung cancer, strong enough UV-A light to damage a virus inside a cell is surely enough to damage the DNA inside the same cell. Sounds more like a company trying to bump their stocks, which it certainly did.

      Yes. You can get the clear quartz tube type with a filter in the glass so they only put out the non ozone producing UVC wavelength. Often sold at aquarium shops for water purifiers and can be used in standard fluorescent fittings. Same eye and skin safety rules apply.
