I am visiting Saigon right now and was able to find a piano to work on this absolutely gorgeous and evocative song while here. Thank you so much for giving us this gift. Beautiful.
You are a great guy, Steve. I never had a single piano lesson, but thanks to you I can learn: Goodnight saigon, the Piano man and She's always a woman to me on a great level! The video is quite long, but it isn't boring at all. Thanks for the free lessons. Greetings from the Netherlands.
Wow! What an incredible tutorial!! Just like you, this is one of my favourites and I've been having a hell of a time learning this from you. Thank you so much for teaching this and I find it ironic that you say your viewers are your heroes whereas I think I speak for everyone when I say you are our heroes!!
I'm really pleased you don't rely on advanced musical terms to teach music, because it's easy for me (someone who doesn't even know most chord names) to feel discouraged when I don't even understand what is being said, let alone how to play the piece being taught. That being said, I also appreciate when you _do_ drop terms here and there (but not without explaining or demonstrating them), because it allows me to slowly learn them while simultaneously learning to play a piece I enjoy.
It absolutely is! I had just finished playing along with this video, and it's extraordinary how effective it is. I practiced about one chapter a day, and I look forward to doing the same with your other videos!
We met as soulmates On Parris Inland We left as inmates From an asylum And we were sharp As sharp as knives And we were so gung ho to lay down our lives We came in spastic Like tameless horses We left in plastic As numbered corpses And we learned fast To travel light Our arms were heavy but our bellies were tight We had no homefront We had no soft soap They sent us playboy They gave us bob hope We dug in deep And shot on sight And prayed to Jesus Christ with all of our might We had no cameras To shoot the landscape We passed the hash pipe And played our Doors tapes And it was dark So dark at night And we held onto each other Like brother to brother We promised our mothers we'd write And we would all go down together We said we'd all go down together Yes we would all go down together Remember Charlie Remember Baker They left their childhood On every acre And who was wrong And who was right It didn't matter in the thick of the fight We, held the day In the palm of our hands They, ruled the night And the night, seemed to last as long as six weeks On Parris Island We held the coastline They held the highland And they were sharp As sharp as knives They heard the hum of the mortars They counted the rotors And waited for us to arrive And we would all go down together We said we'd all go down together Yes we would all go down togethe
Yup....but I figured that out a couple years after I had already made this tutorial, which just goes to show you that you never stop learning new stuff. Not worth refilming the whole thing, but you are correct, and I have adjusted that when I play it live
Thank you very much for the free lesson🥰

This would have to be the most entertaining and informative lesson I’ve seen, love it

Thank you! :-)
Thank you for taking the time to teach this. I really.appreciate it. Thanks again. God bless
Thanks, great tutorial, one of my absolute favourite Billy Joel songs.very powerful song
Thanks! Great tutorial, but I believe that the arpeggio in the beginning and all the ones scattered throughout the song are all major.

Thank you! Everything you said is by design, and it thrills me to know it is of use to people. ;-)

We met as soulmates
On Parris Inland
We left as inmates
From an asylum
And we were sharp
As sharp as knives
And we were so gung
ho to lay down our lives
We came in spastic
Like tameless horses
We left in plastic
As numbered corpses
And we learned fast
To travel light
Our arms were heavy
but our bellies were tight
We had no homefront
We had no soft soap
They sent us playboy
They gave us bob hope
We dug in deep
And shot on sight
And prayed to Jesus Christ
with all of our might
We had no cameras
To shoot the landscape
We passed the hash pipe
And played our Doors tapes
And it was dark
So dark at night
And we held onto each other
Like brother to brother
We promised our mothers we'd write
And we would all go down together
We said we'd all go down together
Yes we would all go down together
Remember Charlie
Remember Baker
They left their childhood
On every acre
And who was wrong
And who was right
It didn't matter
in the thick of the fight
We, held the day
In the palm of our hands
They, ruled the night
And the night, seemed to last
as long as six weeks
On Parris Island
We held the coastline
They held the highland
And they were sharp
As sharp as knives
They heard the hum of the mortars
They counted the rotors
And waited for us to arrive
And we would all go down together
We said we'd all go down together
Yes we would all go down togethe

Nice tutorial! Really appreciate your effort, do you have any sheet music of this?
Steve, isn't the second line D major, with a F# instead of a F?
Yup....but I figured that out a couple years after I had already made this tutorial, which just goes to show you that you never stop learning new stuff. Not worth refilming the whole thing, but you are correct, and I have adjusted that when I play it live
Almost right, the second chord on the D bass is a D major chord, not D minor...
You're right....missed that one when I did the tutorial. Sorry everyone.
yes thats what I play all the time. In the books, they say its minor, but I see Billy play D major.
