    I've watched casting videos for 5-6 years now. The fact that you showed (and explained) what didn't work, in addition to what did work, makes this one of the best casting videos I've seen. When I have a specific shape I want to cast, it really helps to see what other people have done for venting and pouring locations in their mold design. Learning what doesn't work is just as important as learning what does work, and you covered it wonderfully.

      oh definite luck with the basic sand/foam evap casting! still good a very good lesson. next up, go for wax and investment plaster. fairly soupy with vibration will get bubbles out, for really complete bubble elimination you'll want to whip up a vacuum bell (can be done with a coffee can for smaller projects!). you can get BOTH actions (vibration and vacuum) out of a decent size strong aquarium air pump by sealing its seams and giving it an air intake tube, to pull a little vacuum in the can while vibrating everything in it.. mount air pump solid to your board with seal (for the upside down big coffee can), board's feet are thick foam rubber stuff so whole thing vibrates same time as it's pulling air out of the investment plaster inside the smaller soup or coffee can, with the BIG coffee can as vacuum bell. hope you get the image of what I'm typing here, this is a very low budget low tech good working vibe table vacuum bell, you can get nearer jewelry castings out of it. it'll typically take 20-30 minutes vibe-vacuum time for the bubbles to rise up out of the plaster in first part of it's way to drying. if you get the picture do it, it'll really surprise you!

      I once worked in a foundry as a sand molder. Outlet holes are important to let the air out and to also gauge when its full. You can also poke small holes evenly throughout the sand mold and spray C02 into those holes to harden the sand to a solid mold, this would help with detail. I really enjoyed that work, casting is amazing.

    Hey Peter you'll get better but here's a few tips and I'll be sure to upload some videos of me casting when I get better. When you put your foam in, don't make the sand so damp (judging by the color of the sand) and it always helps me to put it through a kitchen strainer to kind of make it less coarse. Lastly, foam coolers make the best forms and melts away the best in my experience

  • @MU-xh8fu

    Liked the video, you covered a lot of detail with minimal words or time.

  • @pheenix42
    @pheenix42 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm seriously impressed. I didn't think your furnace could get hot enough for brass; how did you regulate the temperature so you didn't cook off the zinc? Myself, I was lucky enough to find a bag of refractory cement in a local home improvement place, so when I put mine together it'll last quite a while. EDIT: Also, use a steel bucket instead of a plastic one.

    Tip for lost PLA casting. Use plaster paris instead of sand. You'll get a finer detail.
    bake the plaster mold in an oven at 350*+ F upside down with a tray at the bottom for at least 6 hours, 24 hours at 300* is more ideal. This it to bake out all the water so the mold won't crack or explode when you pour a cast. Upside down, to drain the PLA (good habit stemming from lost wax casting).
    Once poured and ready to break it out, dunk the whole plaster block in a lot of cold water. This will shock the plaster and shatter in the water, making it easier to get at the piece.

    I used my 3d printer to make a replica of the final object that needed to be cast for someone, and they were able to make some sort of resin mold from that, which you could pour the brass into. The result needed some cleaning but it was still a pretty efficient way of doing it.

    Awesome! Curious, have you considered a mold using a plaster investment? My dad is a goldsmith (he casts gold, silver, platinum, bronze and brass) and uses the lost wax technique - he'll make wax patterns and create a hard plaster mold around them, then burn/steam the wax out. I should think styrofoam would be no different? You'd need a heat source big enough to house the mold, but your level of ingenuity is like 9000 so I wouldn't think that would be too much of a problem . . . ;) Also, a suggestion, I'd love to see a DIY homemade jet engine, and from the garage mechanic/tinkerer channels I've seen on youtube, you have both the knowledge and production capability to make a thing like that both possible AND entertaining!

    Next time, have the sprue stick out of the sand and put a tin can around it. This causes the metal to form head pressure (and keeps it from flowing out on to your bucket) which forms the part better . It also gives a large mass of metal to allow shrinkage without causing voids in the mold when the metal cools.

  • @adamguzicki8630
    @adamguzicki8630 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've done the hole metal casting thing with this kind of forge but I haven't done the gas conversion yet but when I do it if it gets better results I'll make sure to do another comment as an explanation of what I did but basically when you go to remake the donut put metal wires in it to increase the durability of it and when you do the forge again put a steel almost outer crucible with a welded bottom going into the floor of the bucket which will also increase the longevity of it
