Phil Gould is one of the most under-appreciated drummers in the music industry. In my book, he's an amazing talent and a joy to watch/listen to...

Agreed! His drumming style was tight.

Agree. Have just had the absolute pleasure of listening to this on some really good speakers with woofers and have finally heard what Phil is actually doing with his kick drum on these tracks. Stunning playing, especially the first 30 seconds of 'Fashion'.

I remember distinctly in a 1988 issue of Modern Drummer, that Neil Peart of Rush really liked Phil Goulds drumming, which I thought was itself notable. "A good drummer that I like who plays simply is Phil Gould, who used to be with Level 42. He plays very simple, R&B-influenced drumming, but when he pulls a fill out it'll be a beautiful fill. And his feel is great. If you try to tap along with their downbeat-on-the-3 type of songs, you'll just about break your hand trying to come down behind the beat as much as he does. He has that feel down so well. It's very satisfying for me to listen to from a drummer's point of view or from a music fan's point of view. It feels great, has tremendous authority, and has the spice of a great little fill leaping out of it."

Well yes and no . He had a rawness and kept time . but some of the later drummers were more active and faster but not necessarily better than Phil Gould . Its all good level 42, early days, during this 1986 concert and currently(well sort of currently , imho its gets a little too crazy type jazzy the most recent and current level 42....whatever)

@@gewglesux As far as I know, Phil did start out as a drummer; however, he dropped off the scene to pursue his other passion of photography. Another fabulous drummer, Dennis Elliott, dropped out of Foreigner to pursue his love of carpentry. Guys that have talent can spread out for sure. Cheers!

Phil's groove playing complimented Kings playing more than any other drummer after. His hi-hat feel was incredibly groovy the bounce the accents the open hat shuffles think this tour was his coming of age as a drummer. An absolute masterclass in pop funk groove drumming.

I've said it so many times i can't help say it again . Annie McCaig looks so charming , pretty and childlike in that bow in her hair shaped like a rose on top . What a great talent she was . If memory serves , she also contributed to recording sessions with and sang live back up vocals for Tears for Fears . I can't find anything about her on the internet past the early 1990s . I hope she is doing fine .

How funny. So many shouts out for Phil Gould's impeccable contribution to this here. I'd just done the same five minutes ago in comments for the clip of Love Games from the same gig. After six or seven years of backing up King's hyperthumbs, he absolutely had it down what to do. My only complaint....he missed the effective offbeat snare before the second verse of World Machine!! He seems to try and make up for it with an extra drumroll afterwards. I saw you Phil!!! Ha ha. :)

I like Mark playing his Jay Dee instead of the Status along with Trace Elliot amplification instead of Ashdown, it's a more ballsy sound and although Gary Husband was okay at the drums the new guy is way too busy, Phil Gould had that special lock. This was the groups best incarnation IMHO.

    • @vincev2926
      @vincev2926 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

The Gould brothers left cause the group became too commercial and they wanted to be more on the personal funk jazz stuff they were doing before. And I wholeheartedly agree with their move. Band was never the same after.

To each his own...I love the new drummer's sound. I also loved Gary's sound too, and in some areas I think he does better than the new guy. As for Phil...also very talented, but I think he pulls his punches too much (probably reflects your theory that the new guy is "too busy"). I like the new drumming sound though because it's more layered and intrinsic, which fits well with the band's pop-jazz sound (I feel like they carried some of the spirit that Steely Dan started in 1970s, and that band was famous for having the best session drummers on their records)

The 1980s i remember for the most part as an apolitical era in music . It was refreshing to hear some lyrics from some of the level 42 songs here that are "anti-establishment" . One of the few bands i can rember of the top of my head who were critical of "the system" were the Clash and the Dead Kennedys . Also the Pretenders had a few lines here and there that were critical but not much . If i remember correctly the Sex Pistols were already passe about 1981 which was replaced by post punk and new wave(not to be confused with the new wave arthouse films coming out of France, Italy, Germany in the late 1950's through to the early 1970s) . Loved the pistols version of God Save the Queen which came out i think as early as 1976 in the UK .
Imo , the pistols gstq had some very perceptive anti status quo lyrics . Musically it induced primal dance and movement in me and so many others . It put the roll back into rock, rock n roll . Not since Chuck Berry's Johnny B Goode was their a song that made you want to dance .
I think people were getting tired of the complex rococo rock guitar solos . I mean even tacky disco music was more fun in retrospect to dragging the dead horse of classic rock into the late 1970s

about 9:53 in a couple seconds the sax player hits a very low note which is standard jazz. but right after, the way the video was edited it looks like keyboard wizard mike lindup is looking at him like he made a mistake, although i doubt Lindup thought that . a couple more times in the concert he drops from higher notes to a deep note and the video editing is sadly the same

    Some folks try to multiply
    From sunrise to sunset
Leave behind more of their kind
    So no-one will forget
But that ain't where I'm coming from -today
Those easy girls don't turn me on - anyway
I want to know where my pride has gone
    The party's over
Caught in a dream inside this world machine
    Teachers teach and preachers preach
    Of spiritual evolution
But this big I am from Uncle Sam
    Just adds to my confusion
I've seen his face, I've heard his song - before
but I don't care what time he's on - anymore
I must have been on the streets too long
    The party's over
Caught in a dream inside this world machine
I find myself outside your door
Trying to make it like before
But you don't follow what I say
And I can't tell by the smile
    You're no longer a child
That part of you was buried yesterday ...
    ... who knows
Why they come and where they go
    In this world machine?
It's the chosen fools who make the rules
    That don't apply to me
With their fast-car games and counter claims
    Not my reality
    And I don't know if I belong - today
I don't know why my friends have gone - away
I must have been on the streets too long
    The party's over
Caught in a dream inside this world machine.
(Don't knock the system - we'll knock some sense in you
Can't beat the system - there's nothing you can do

    It's all about you
You'll be too late if you hesitate
I see you live behind that smile
    With cold blue baby eyes
You cut me up with razor style
Dancing in disguise (dancing in disguise)
You chance, your face to suit your hair
    Look into the mirror again
    And I'll be there

    Forever dancing
There's no time to sway yeah
And when the fever starts to fade
You know you may have gone too far
And what is left is anyone's guess
No one knows who you are
Don't scratch me with your tiger mind
    And freaky fantasies
You say you can't be satisfied
Well I'm sure you never will (sure you never will)
    You look en vogue

What happened to the full continuous video of this concert ? ! oh wait a minute...In that continuous video there was a close up of a guy kissing a female at the beautiful ending of Leaving me Now . Maybe they broke up and sued to have it edited out . I don't see that close up kiss at the end of the clip of this playlist at the end of Leaving me now.

Recently I discovered Phil Gould's album Watertight released in 2009 . Not better or worse than Level 42 , just different . A little mellower perhaps on some tracks....but anyway I like it a lot . There were some really fine arrangers, musicians and singers who contributed including Mike Lindup . click link to hear it : th-cam.com/play/OLAK5uy_k-aG-vDqCipFYkoSy1Nlogg7ggC02IV2c.html

Why did the Gould brothers vanish?

    • @Hellwyck
      @Hellwyck 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Because they were fed up of the pop style the band were going in.

    • @letmeouttamycage
