Recent traveler down the Gunship rabbit hole - I've been binge listening and binge watching their music videos the last couple of weeks. Lost Boys videos led me to Gunship (Dark All Day feat Tim Cappello and Indiana - the music video blew my mind).
@@BMakabre Got COVID, had a synthwave site from TH-cam loaded on my ROKU TV, and Gunship came across...I've been lost ever since. I cannot believe this band even exists. They've simply GOT to release more music. If these guys ever find Ken Andrews, an entire new genre of music will emerge from the collab.
What's so great about Gunship's new album is that it works on so many levels, just like their debut. There's the cyberpunk element, which isn't really my thing, but there's also that intangible element that Gunship's music has: that feeling you get hearing these synths and tones that takes you back to your days as a kid in the 80s and early 90s, the last era before the internet irreversibly connected the world. When I listen to Gunship, I remember the feel of the fall breeze brushing on my face as I pedaled my bike through my small town. I remember a summer month spent indoors because "Super Mario Bros. 3" came out that year. I remember playing night-tag in the park. That famous scene in "The Lost Boys" where Tim Capello rocks and gyrates with his sax? That kind of after-dark, fire-barrel revelry couldn't happen now without a ton of lame corporate sponsorship. It would be overly-organized, overly monetized, and overly constrained -- just like everything else in the modern world. The era that Gunship evokes had something going for it, and I'm glad they're so good at recalling that era through music.
Actually I think it's more like that feeling couldn't happen because we either are or around so many black mirrored zombies 24/7. So much so that we see a lack of compassion or community largely becoming the dominant force behind humanity. For your nostalgia I am truly with you. I remember walking with my friends to the park for tag or building forts, and that sense the world is much more grand in scope than it actually is. Also if you're like me the cynicism has encroached upon the peripheral of your vision of the world like an inky stain.
I was a kid in the 80s and a teenager in the 90s. Outside of the video's theme, their music does not sound like 80s to me. It's a misconception. Gunship does really sound original and rooted in this decade though, and that's fine.
Immediately thought of Altered Carbon when hearing the intro - before I knew Richard K. Morgan was making the voice over. Freaking infectious song. Love it.
One thing that synthwave/dreamwave has shown to me beyond reasonable doubt: My 44 year old brain is absolutely NOT closed off to new music, but it does really like music with the texture, patterns and feel of the 80s. 70% of the music I listen to these days came out in the last five years. And a lot of it is by artists who weren't even born in the 80s. I think I like the 2010s' take on the 80s better than the 80s itself. A sort of idealised, dream-like retro futurism.
I’m just having a few drinks discovering this band and I can tell it’s one of those epic ones I’ll remember. Not even sure how I ended up here. How have I not heard them before?!
