I've always suspected it's because a lot of trance musicians probably grew up with and were at least partly influenced by the awesome synth soundtracks of 80's sci-fi movies. :)

Sending demos to club djs is an awesome way to go, if your songs are good enough they will be heard by a lot of people and will eventually be spread by more than just you, giving you extra pr :)
