One thing that many of you admirers never mention, Bobby Jones was an amateur his whole career. He never played for money. I never go to any PGA tour events anymore because I think that the pros today are really treated like the Queen of England. Bobby Jones was the greatest golfer of all time and he possessed the most beautiful swing of all time. A real gentleman and authentic hero whose innate goodness shines right through.
Agree, and he won thirteen majors and retired at 28 years old yes 28 during his playing days he received his law degree, started practicing. Law over 2 years before he retired and had several other degrees. Bobby went months without touching a club and went out and won the tournament.
What is so great is how casual he was hitting those shots. The sand is the same as it was then. The balls are better today, but that is no factor in these shots. We even have better clubs than Bobby did. But man could he play. He hits these shots like they are easy.

Well, not taking away anything from Bobby Jones, BUT, watch the first and second plugged lie shots. The first flies half way to the hole and rolls up to the hole. The 2nd barely gets out of the trap, some 15 feet short of the first shot but then rolls twice as far as the first. Look at the green! It's all down hill from the top of the trap and flat around the hole then uphill just after the hole. It's a set up. Anyone would do well from where Jones is playing the shot.

Hickory shafted golfing is the only facet of golf that's growing in popularity these days. Six clubs and 3 hour rounds of golf and the period apparel are part of its appeal.
Amazing chips with what is a 7-iron out of the sand. I don't think any pro would think of doing that on a long bunker shot like that... the lost art of a true genius short game.
Actually, I have a set of clubs from that era. He is using what was then called a "niblick" which became the 9 iron. The 9 iron from my set is 54 degrees or what is now a sand wedge. If I ever replace the shafts in those clubs they will be as good as anything made today.
@@bradyhathorn6967 If you are asking about the grooves.....they are in great shape. There is little wear and tear on these clubs. They are Hillerich & Bradsby blades. Not for sale. To me, the shafts are not very good for today's crowd. These were among the first mass produced steel and they didn't have them down pat yet.

doubt you are "the" ben wright or you would understand the difference. i play hickory shafted clubs and i will say this. the ball does not go as far, bad shots are worse and good shots not as good as you thought and short game is h e double toothpicks! not to mention sand! get some hickories and shoot under par. come back and tell me "if bobby can do that then"!

The club is not supposed to dig into the sand. It is made to glide along on top like a surf board. Don't try to "dig" the ball out. Just "scrape" the sand starting 2 or 3 inches behind the ball. The sand will pile up in front of the club and it is that sand that pops the ball up and out. One of the easiest shots in the game.

A wedge will "dig" into the sand and is no longer what is used in the sand traps. Now, it's what is called a sand wedge. This lesson is outdated by the newer equipment.

inmhstn Gene Sarazan invented the Sand Wedge and Bobby Jones would of had one by the time the film was made. In the book Triumphant Journey author Dick Miller makes note of Sarazen giving a Sand Wedge to Jones. Jones is the best of all time. Very little practice and could handle any kind of pressure.

The only other person I think that had a close rhythmic swing to Bobby was Payne Stewart , Man How I miss watching that guy play on tour !!!!
