We hung our stockings and on Christmas morning, they were filled with fruit and nuts. Then our biggest tradition was going to Memaw & Pepaw's house. Since their passing, and cousins and sisters have moved all across the country, we only have small personal family gatherings now. It is not the same. Also, in the new today, people, like my kids, their spouses, do not like doing anything traditional. Instead of trying so hard to make traditions for our kids, we have literally given up. For Thanksgiving and Christmas, they come when they want. We found it easier to let it be than to argue. Christmas, we make a pot of Gumbo, and dessert and cookies. Starting next year, no more thanksgiving feasts, it will be Turkey, Ham with sandwich fixins. The past 2 years no one ate anything we cooked and so we were feeding our neighbors instead. No more. I love my neighbors, but I was cooking for my kids and grandkids. The cost is to much now.
On Christmas Eve we would always go to my dad's twin brother's house and have dinner With the extended family on that side, get presents in a visit from Santa Claus. Then on Christmas Day we will go to my grandparents on my mom's side and have Christmas until they became too old then we had it at our house. Now that most of them have passed on it's pretty quiet around Christmas.
This was most interesting. Thank you for your research. Now quite a chunk of this I didn't know. I didn't think I was so ignorant about some of this information. Things I didn't know I NEEDED to know. Merry Christmas to you and yours.
Hi Aunt Vicki! 👋 IDK if you knew this, but today's Sinter Klaas Day (Dec 5th). My cousins father is from Holland (The Netherlands), and I got to celebrate one year (late 80s/early 90s) with them. I still have my little wooden shoes that Papa carved for me. To this day I still eat an orange in recognition of the day before calling my cousin to wish him a happy birthday & a Happy Sinter Klaas Day. Its a special day for my family. (Psst - Sinter Klaas goes to the door of good children, not down a chimney, with his white horse. Bad kids now that's a whole other story...)
When I was a young child, I asked Mom, Why do people give presents at Christmas? She answered and said, its Jesus birthday, and since we can't give Him a present, we give each other presents. I thought that was a perfect answer.
