The Making of Saloon | A Documentary

  • We started writing "Saloon" in the spring of 2012. We wanted to capture something that was chaotic and unique but still had integrity and replay value. We were so young then (Dawson 20, Kyle 18, Tj 18, Parker 14) that trying to find our own sound was an extremely uphill battle. We were all trying to discover our own identities at that point, let alone write something that was true to ourselves. We scrapped dozens of songs over the course of 4-6 months and locked in a date to go to Canada to record in a really nice studio. When we arrived, we only had 30-40% of the record done, and it soon became clear that this record wasn't going to be finished there. In hindsight, I don't know how anyone would allow our unprepared asses to stay there. It's pretty embarrassing how immature we all were back then.
After 3 weeks in Canada, we headed back home to Idaho and took it upon ourselves to finish the album. Dawson dove headfirst into learning everything there is to know about production, sound design, mixing, etc., and the next 6-8 months became a whirlwind of making mistakes, writer's block, scrapping songs, dealing with broken gear, and everything you could think of that muddies up the completion of an album. We still look back and have no idea how we actually made it work. In Dawson's words, he describes it as this:
"Saloon was the dumbest, most nonsensical, train wreck of an album. We literally had no idea what we were doing, the most immature young adults that you could run into at any bowling alley on a Saturday night. We all look back and cringe. The whole process of making this record is like watching your 4-year-old play soccer and seeing them score on their own team."
HOWEVER, somehow it managed to be a magical and hilarious mess of beautiful art...and I wouldn't take it back for anything."

I remember in high school when this album came out, it genuinely changed who I was and who I was going to be. I remember being on Skype with my girlfriend at the time and she mentioned that one of our mutual friends had shared a music video on Facebook. She was watching it and she thought it was funny and the music was good, so she sent it to me. I remember as if it were yesterday, even though it was over a decade now. The first time I saw the music video for Cover Girl, something clicked for me. I had been listening to metal and metalcore, but something about the way the song sounded made me realize that there had to be more music like this out there. I watched more music videos and dove into the catalogue. I watched live performance videos and was blown away by the musicianship and showmanship. Genuinely, I had never seen a band play live music that way before. I remember my girlfriend was nice enough to buy some merch for me; two signed posters for Saloon, and a handful of stickers, that I still have to this day.
Fast forward to 2016, and my friends and I were talking about getting a band together to play metalcore type of stuff, and I remember this being my first band I played guitar in and I wanted to really put my all into it. I remember we wanted to put on a show at every gig we played and make people remember us. I chatted with the singer for the band, who was a major driving creative force for the band as a whole,, and I remember showing them The Ongoing Concept, and they were just as blown away as I was back in 2013. We both agreed that we wanted to make music that was as good as Saloon and put on a live performance with the same energy y'all did.
Fast forward to late 2017 and my band was lucky enough to play a show with y'all, albeit under a different lineup, but it was still just as inspiring to be able to share a stage with the band that made me want to play live music and have fun doing it. Meeting Dawson was like meeting my hero, and I'm forever thankful for the opportunity to share that stage.
After all those years, I no longer play music live, but the way Saloon shaped my musical tastes and molded my future in the way that it did is undeniable. I will always love this album, and I just hope it's touched someone else the same way it has me. To TJ and the Scholz brothers; I love y'all and please never stop rocking.

Great documentary fellas! I remember when this was all rolling out and how much of a fan I was. One of my first "chaotic" heavy bands and its cool to the see the more in depth bts.

This was really fun! Saloon is one of my all time favorite albums, and likely will be for the rest of my life. It has this amazing fusion of styles and uniqueness to it that really speaks to me. Same with Handmade. Saloon really has a unique, Western metal feel to it that I've never gotten from anything else.
Sidenote: I grew up in Dillon MT (right next to Bannack where ya'll filmed the awesome Saloon video). When I saw that video for the first time, I about died from shock at seeing little old Bannack in a music video!

God I wish I could have bought Dawson a soldering iron and gave TJ my cheap squire bass back then… Kyle and occasionally Parker went to a small group at Mimi Allred’s house with me at that time. Everyone goes through insecurities around those ages, but look at you guys now!
Huge blessing and inspiration you guys have been to me and music. Btw… Kyle is so hot right now!

Is the John you guys keep mention from Langley BC? If so I am fairly sure I have recored with him a few years after you guys did. The studio seems to be the same layout if not the same space.

I went to see Hotel Books at a church in Rural NC years ago. And i walked out of that show a bonofied The Ongoing Concept fan.
My friends have been very patient with me and my tangents when i show them my TOC flow chart, which points to as many song references to other tracks as i could find. Thanks so much for rewarding your long time listers and fans time and time again.

Lost my Macbook Pro around the same time. EMF issues as I went homeless. Lost it next to a coffee shop. They didn't want my water bottle, just my computer. 2015 or so.
Goodness. I just got a new Mac. Just started working on things again. Just had to learn internet security so I don't get burned to kingdom come again.
    Nice.
