I bought this exact transistor tester at my local flea market and it came with the manual. I will read the manual and refer to this video.
    Very interesting and informative video

Helped me out as I have not found my manual.

According to the manual the transistor checker can check transistors in circuit that is the reason it has the leads.

my meter goes beyond the end of the scale during calibration following
the procedure written in the manual on pg 12:
180 ohm resistor in probes red and white,
    switch to npn,
    leakage trimpot turned full cc
    cal knob also full cc
    battery ok 1.45vdc
turning the leakage pot one way or another does not move the needle back from right,
checked components, diode ok, 3 precision resistors ok,
replaced 10k trimpot with a known good one, still no go ....
what else could be wrong ?

What does beta mean? anybody know?
    Thank you

Beta is the current gain - about the same as the collector current divided by the base current. Typically roughly 200.

@@acmefixer1 can you simplify it a little bit more please? What is gain? I see that on guitar amplifiers also. Is it like raising the volume?
Beta has always befuddled me I know that current =amperage. Also is high Beta a good thing or bad on a transistor? I do have the IT-18 so I want to learn how to use it I also have the resistor that came with it.
      Thank you very much.

Great video, but the PS fan is noisy. Must be one monster of a PS. I have the Heathkit transistor checker that has multiple cells, IIRC D cells, so it would cost a lot just for the cells. I should build a PS for it, but I seldom use any tester, a transistor costs less than a nickel nowadays.

+Acme Fixer Thanks for the feedback. The power supply is a big rackmount Sorenson 0-25V 0-40A supply and it is noisy, but very handy.

Acme Fixer, you could use AA or AAA batteries as they are the same voltage but higher amphours. It probably doesn't need the higher amphours since its just a transistor tester
