I couldn't agree more! How wonderfully Rai sings and with such gorgeous and stylish piano playing! We can only hope that he will consider doing an album of standards.
Strongly disagree, Ella's one is a true gem that respects Johnny Mercer's lyrics and story, she kept it as optimistic and joyfull as it should be. I love Rai... but here he's too much into reharmonization and melancholia, a ballad does not necessarily have to be sad, Johnny Mercer has proven countless of times it could be fun ! Sure the reharm is top notch, but... does not fit the story.
Ugh.... literally perfect. I wanna find the full video of the one I think some years later where he does the scatt solo. There only seems to be the scatt clip available on YT
I have listened to many versions of this classic. This is the one I prefer, its open ended, and lyrical. A great interpretation. I will try to sing it as well. daniel g.
I agree about the beauty of this wonderful performance, but I laughed at your word choice of "geezer." As an American, the word "geezer" doesn't really have an appealing connotation. We usually think of some old guy in his later years, as likely as not to be walking around with a cane, very possibly grumpy and grumbling about this or that. Very much not the image of a vibrant musician like Rai!
Beautiful rendition of a beautiful song. I am having to learn it for the first time for an upcoming performance. Your rendition brought the notation to life and gave me an optional angle of approach. Thank you Rai.
Lyrics by Johnny Mercer and music by Hoagy Carmichael, published in 1941. The yearning expressed in the lyrics was based on Mercer's longing for Judy Garland. (Wikipedia)
Very nice. No excessive technique just tasty playing. Same with the voice. No showing off just beautiful musical choices. Would love a piano only version of this to sing to.
I thought the same thing ... first thought came was Chet Baker . Ha! ... and also, Nicola Tesla on the piano!! But here's the defining thing about vocalists if they are going to have a say and that is: #1. Can they play an instrument AND sing - and this guy does ... and well #2. Do they sing in tune - I mean spot on - and this guy does.
@@nezkeys79 Nevermind I'm too stupid to be able to hear all those chords. I only know the first chord of the sequence is Abmaj9, (voiced: Ab on bass, G, Bb, C, Eb on the right hand) and the very last is Eb6/9 (voiced: Eb on bass, G, Bb, C, F on the right hand). I'm not sure about the rest
@@nezkeys79 I don't mean the whole tune and solo though, I mean those chords he plays in the ending that you pointed out. If you could identify them that would be incredible

Can't believe this hasn't found its way onto a single youtube transcribers channel
Good news: somebody transcribed his version of 'come together'
@whatsmylogin not really. There's loads of versions of it that I've seen already
This still hasn't
Speechless. Perfection. What a voice along with such a piano performance.
Simply stunning - an album of standards done like this would be out of this world man.

Absolutely great performance!
Rai's talent is next level. Absolutely brilliant all the way around.

i absolutely love it when he plays that em7 chord instead of ebmaj7. amazing performance!
I think he's actually doing that as a tritone sub for the Bbm7 going to A7 to Abmaj7.
At 5:03 he does it again but using Em11.
Beautiful. My soul thanks you.
Just perfect. Such a talented geezer, love his subtle chord changes and tweaks.

A soul take. Great!
Chet Baker on piano is coming!
that is what i thought lol
He's a far better singer than Chet was.
Maybe if he got a cold he’d sound like Chet 😄
He and kd lang both do an unforgetable rendendithion of this haunting song..
Sublime. Superb. Takes this great old standard to all sorts of surprising new places. Some jazz genius here. Thank you.

Talent and a beautiful voice
