Welcome to Edinburgh’s Arthur Seat hill.
Today we’re going to travel along the Innocent Railway cycle path from here right the way to the coast.
We start off by travelling through this tunnel. It’s quite tricky to find the entrance, but I have another video showing you how to get here. I’ll put a link in the description below.
The tunnel was built between 1828 and 1831. It was originally built as part of the Edinburgh and Dalkeith Railway, which was one of the earliest railways in Scotland. The tunnel was designed by the engineer James Jardine and it runs for around 2.4 km.
As you leave the tunnel, watch out at this point. There is another path that joins from the right and sometimes cyclists appear suddenly from this direction and can cause a crash.
We’re now heading through an area of Edinburgh called Duddingston. To your left there is a Lock and views across it to Arthur’s Seat.
We’re now approaching a cast iron railway bridge over the Braid Burn. This was built in 1831 and is one of the earliest surviving examples of this design of bridge.
We now have to cross the busy Duddingston Road, so wait for the lights and we’ll continue on.
We’re now in an area called Bingham and as we go through this park we sweep left to follow the Niddrie Burn up to Duddingston Park South road. There are lights here too, helping you to get across this busy main road.
This is now an area called Brunstane, with The Jewel area to the right across the Burn. We’ll rejoin the river soon, but now we need to cut across this retail car park and head up and over the railway line.
The path is easy to miss here so watch as we head into Brunstane Burn Path which sweeps down to run alongside the Burn. We pass under another railway track before heading along a lovely tree lined part of the path.
It opens to Brunstane Mill Park were we continue straight on and cross over the Burn once more.
We’re now in an area called Eastfield and as we reach Edinburgh Road, you now have a choice. You can turn right and travel less than 1km to MusselBurgh or you can turn left and travel 1.2km to Portobello beach. I’ll have videos of these places for you soon.
