This song is a tribute to one of the greatest Romani songs, sung by some of the greatest singers of all times. In some way , it is our inspiration for entering into the mystical world of the gipsies.
Lyrics are written by Žarko Jovanović in Romani language, in the year 1949, but the melody already existed among Romani people of Serbia, Bulgaria and Romania. Some say that the original melody was of a love song and that it was known during the twenties of the last century and that Žarko Jovanović adopted it and wrote lyrics of his own dedicated to Roma people. It tells about the atrocities they suffered during World War II, and about the rise of Roma people that is about to come. It was adopted as the Romani national anthem at the first world congress of Roma people in 1971 in London.

Gelem, Gelem is a song composed by Žarko Jovanović, often used as the anthem of the Romani people. The title has been adapted in many countries by local Roma to match their native orthography and spoken dialect of the Romani language. Some of the song's many titles include,"Gyelem, Gyelem" (Hungarian orthography),"Jelem, Jelem","Dzelem, Dzelem","Dželem, Dželem","Đelem, Đelem" (Croatian and Latin Serbian and Bosnian orthography),"Djelem, Djelem" (German and French orthography),"Ђелем, Ђелем" (Cyrillic Serbian and Bosnian orthography),"Ѓелем, Ѓелем","Џелем, Џелем","Джелем, джелем" (Russian, Ukrainian and Bulgarian orthography),"Opré Roma" and"Romale Shavale".In an interview with reporter Mike Kalezić, Jovanović himself titled the song ‘Opre Roma’.[1]After experiencing firsthand the incarceration of Roma during the Porajmos (the Romani Holocaust of World War II), Jovanović later composed the lyrics of Gelem, Gelem and set them to a traditional melody in 1949. The song was first adopted by delegates of the first World Romani Congress held in 1971.[2]

Amazing combination of music of 2 groups that have had no place of their own, who struggled to survive, who were thrown all over the world, who were hated and shunned but survived... there is a bond I have seen in Eastern Europe.. I suggest a film Train De Vie, French with English subtitles, it's on YT, it is on a subject and it is great. Music of both expresses similarly sadness and joy often in the same piece... the tears and the laughter . This Gypsy Anthem is a good example of that.

I want to understand about how these homeless people ended up as they did when they left Northern India. I would imagine its a very hard life on the road, though it would have had its advantages also... at least for the young and healthy. With age, comfort becomes more important. Thank you BytomGirl
Jan Durgen It's my pleasure dear Jan. If you type in Train De Vie full movie you will find it. It is a bit of a fantasy mixed with reality but shows what happened to people of both groups and their bond. I know Gypsy people well (I am not a Gypsy myself) and I know a Gypsy King of Poland who is also a singer. My two friends were solo performers of a known Gypsy ensemble and I have some videos with their music I made. Both groups, Gypsies and Jews were always on the move and not because they wanted to but largely because they were unaccepted and shunned in so many places. I am a Jew and lived already in 4 countries. It's a tough life but I wouldn't change for the world.
+BytomGirl Oh, thank you for your reply !!! Yes, I understand more than you know because my grandmother escaped the Armenian genocide; we too were scattered globally. I'm trying to find out more about these people. I want to know WHY they were forced to leave Northern India so long ago, but because they apparently have no written history (only passed down from generations), there are a lot of misconceptions. I only know one thing. An entire group of people would not voluntarily leave their homeland to live off the land, because it is such an unimaginably HARD LIFE, especially for women raising children. That said, I hear the joy in their music as well as the tragedy. How sad to be shunned all these centuries. I can't even imagine the suffering. But as with all lifestyles, being "free" must have its beauty about it - at least for the young who don't require comfort. So I get why many people romanticize about being truly free from governmental/societal restrictions. That must not be true for today's gypsies, since the world has become so highly populated and more "CIVILIZED." Ha, regarding that word.... I FEEL for the gypsies. I will learn more. Thank you so much for your kindness BytomGirl. I truly appreciate it. You are lucky to have known the gypsy life well enough to have a deep understanding. To say you would not give up your gypsy experience for anything means there must be something good and beautiful about these people. Yes, you've had a terribly tragic history as well as the Armenians, gypsies, etc. You are such a STRONG people, and being highly intelligent doesn't hurt either :). I remember all those who perished and I still say I don't understand WHY humans treat other HUMANS with hate and indifference. Seems we cannot go very long without creating more war, more anguish. How primitive humanity still is. (I realize there is a truly beautiful side to humans as well, but I simply think war is total insanity). So glad I found you on TH-cam. Keep in touch
