When I first listened to this, I more imagined an imagined ending of Shelter, where Rin has lived her fullest days in the simulation (or in whatever habitable planet the ship finds, unsure of which) and is finally ready to pass on as the last human in existence of a beautiful-yet-unknowing universe. There, her departing soul is standing upon the ledge of a vast starry darkness, and from there her father stands alongside her, and they both admire what they and every other human being will miss out on, having been forgotten about way before the universe forgets itself, and passes as well. This edit is truly beautiful and lets us imagine so many beautiful, sad, or both things possible while we're still around.
When I listen to this song, I always have some kind of depressing situation that I imagine myself in. Such as staring out into a fading dawn, looking down at my hand that is far older than my actual age with a ring on it. I'm sure you can guess where that's going. My sad emotions burst like a damn when I listen to this song.
I just imagined I found out I had a couple months left to live and I was apologizing to all my friends and family for not doing and being more. Saying all the things I never felt like were the right time to say and selling all my stuff and living out my dreams for a short time

I read somewhere that the nearest habitable planet from earth is seven light years away. Since the days on Rin's tablet add up to seven years, & she suddenly starts regaining her memory & gets that letter from her father, I find it easy to believe that there was a sequence triggered to start waking her up at this specific point in time. If my theory were true, & Rin awakens to arrive at a new colony, there is no reason to believe that she couldn't get married later & have a normal life.
Though I really enjoy and find comfort in the idea that Rin may find a future where she isn't alone; I think that one of the big points that Porter Robinson tried to express was that even if Rin would stay alone, she could overcome or how it is written in her father's letter "realize" that loneliness and thereby live a good life, even left alone. That being said... SHE TOTALLY FOUND A GOOD LIFE AND GOT MARRIED. I may have only seen her for 6 min., but I'm too attached to her as a character to believe anything else xD
