You also have to remember he wasn't that prominent in the comics either and his primary role was to be the energetic, lovable comic relief of the group. That's why writers often put him on missions with more serious characters like Cyclops or Wolverine. We got to see that kind of dynamic in Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix, movies in which he was the energetic goofball of the group like in the comics. Honestly, Nightcrawler is the least complex X-Man of the Claremont era.

He did have a set of metal claws he wore so he could get use to the movement and so the VFX people could project where they should be
