I'd love to see more imagery as you are talking, I find it helps me retain more information because I feel more visually stimulated. I love what you are doing and it was refreshing to have a video with an actual woman versus all first suggested videos on TH-cam with men talking or computer voiced. I wish you all the best and that you also can be amoung them. As I had to search specifically for a female speaker and as female myself, I found your suggestion more relatable.
I believe there is just two main factors: a.) Are you an extreme hiker on extreme terrain, where you find yourself exhausted and stumbling? Get boots. b.) Do you hike easy trails and quit early with energy to spare? Get shoes. The other question is goretex or not: a.) Are you doing high mileage and ultralighting with only 2 socks in your pack? Get goretex. The fine dust collecting in your all day socks will kill your skin. b.) Are you switching socks during long hike? No gore tex. Also, short hikers(less than 4 hrs)
Great advice Amanda! I’ve been sticking to trail runners for most everything now. I struggled with Gore Tex vs no Gore Tex and I actually choose non Gore Tex with a quick drying sock for just about everything now. Even when I get my feet wet they dry really fast! Great video!
@@susanweber6861 really any sick that is made for trail running. Lightweight socks will dry faster since they hold less water. Many brands like Stance or Smartwool etc make lightweight socks. Those will dry the quickest!
I wore a pair of Adidas trail running shoes to do 90 miles of the Pacific Coast Trail up to Mt. Whitney and back down, so I have a love of trail running shoes as my hikers....even with a heavy backpack on. I wear hiking books now, because I am older and feel like I get a bit more ankle support, mainly for the steeper down hill sections, but I still love my running shoes for going up and down the hills on my property and for shorter hikes.
You're awesome! I wear boots for work all the time and I dislike wearing boots so much. These magna trail shoes look amazing and i'm definitely going to have to try them out. I appreciate you for making this video and your camp cooking videos ! Keep them coming!
Hello Amanda, great topic. You hit it on the mark with this video. Season, weather, terrain, and personal preferences all need to be considered when choosing foot ware. I been watching your channel for awhile now and you keep surprising me on each video. Keep putting out great content. Take Care and Keep Exploring The Outdoors.
I have transitioned from a Merrell Moab hiking boots to New Balance Hierro with Vibram sole. NB has wide shoe sizes Find they cling/grab better. Great video. Thanks
I am a new subscriber to your channel (AOC brought me here!), and I've watched several videos so far. (I'm prepping for a car camping trip & I haven't been out in YEARS.) Anyway, I was noticing that when you get to your campsites, you put or have these cute sandals on. They caught my eye, so I'm glad I found this footwear vid! I will def be investigating the Bedrocks. Thank you!
Wow i'm in love with those boots. 💖 I love the minimalist design, natural leather and the silly toe box designs - they look very comfortable and it seems like it would be a good driving shoe too. I have an old car with a manual transmission so the more i feel the pedals the better. Thank you!
I’ll definitely have to check these shoes out! I love being barefoot since I was a child too! When I get home I have to take off my shoes or sandals to touch the ground cause I love it. It refreshes ne. The only weird one from the house lol
I love vivobarefoot shoes!! I have very flat wide feet and have always went barefoot as much as possible. I’ve always had weak ankles and after changing to exclusively barefoot shoes my ankles are much stronger and I twist my ankles much less. Definitely the best boots/shoes for my feet!
Your videos have been very helpful for me as I’m just getting back into hiking. I was wondering what kind of drone are you using when you hike? The photography in your videos are spectacular.
I was looking for a good pair of sandals and because both Nick and yourself wear Bed Rock, as of now I will too. Just ordered a pair. Thanks again for your vid's.
Wow the vivos are expensive! I was able to find what I believe is an unpopular color on Amazon for half the price so I went ahead and purchased! Looking forward to using them!
At first I thought from the thumbnail you were going to recommend heavy hiking boots haha! Nice choices. I’m an avid cross country hiker and backpacker and have those exact shoes (both minimal wide toe box zero drop trail runners and the Vivos) and love them both after tons of trail miles and many trips. Great recommendations! Bedrocks are next on my list to try as well.
Will you do a video about minimalist winter shoes? Would you recommend the vivo tracker boots with thick socks in the winter? I live in NY where it’s regularly 30-10 degrees in winter plus lots of snow and I’m just getting into minimalist shoes. Thanks!
I did that gravel and rock walking thing throughout my childhood, too! I used to walk to school barefoot, and got made fun of. Now , however, I am 72, and I find I have to wear more supportive shoes.
Great video! I love my Altra but I'm definitely going to try out the Tracker and Magna! Thanks for sharing and absolutely love your channel! Happy trails!
Great info, thanks! My husband swears by trail runners over hiking boots (except for during winter hiking), and he got me some La Sportivas for Christmas so I'm going to see if I become a convert like him. :)
It's the Synchilla Snap-T fleece from Patagonia. I got it a few years ago so they don't sell this exact pattern anymore, but they have lots of other colorful options!
Thank you for the good information.😀 I love my minimalist style running shoes. I want to get a hiking boot or shoe like the ones you talk about here. Out of the boot and trail shoe, which do you prefer? Great tip on sizing. Do you know if both run to size? I love your videos and all the good information you are sharing.💕
I would say that the hiking boot runs a little small. I'm not sure which pair I like better though. It's hard to pick one 😂 The hiking boots were the first ones I got and I think they're a good shoe to have. The trail shoe is probably closer to the running shoes that you already have. 💚
wow your tracker shoes look so soft. my trackers are heavy and inflexible and even made my heel bleed due to how stiff it was. couldn't wear it after trying once
Hey there Amanda!! I'm curious to know your thoughts on the sizing for the magna trails? I've watched some other reviews that say when it came to those, they ran big. What is your experience with that? Were they true to size for you or did you find you needed to size down? I'm hoping to purchase these to bring on a hiking trip in about a week and half and don't want to end up having to return them. Any insight would help immensely!!☺
I immediately thought about snakes when you showed the sandals lol. Seems nice and comfy though. I use a pair of heavy Merrell boots and have been considering something lighter. The barefoot shoes seem interesting, may give those a shot. Thanks for the info.
Love this new content! I wear trail runners/zero drop & want to make the full transition to minimalist shoes. Have you tried any other brands? I love my Zero Shoes trail sandals for camp shoes. Do these Magna's run true to size or more smaller? I have been wanting a pair and found some online. It's hard for me to size up since I wear an 11 and most womens stop at 10-11. If you find any other options, I would love to consider them. I was planning on going to UT but with the heat, decided to wait until fall maybe. Can't wait to see your adventures this summer! I am going to send you an e-mail as well. Take care lady!
I haven't really tried any other barefoot brands that are similar. As far as sizing goes, I usually wear anywhere between a 9-11 depending on the shoe and I have the Magna shoes in a 9. I have the Tracker boot in a size 11 since I usually wear them with a slightly thicker sock. Unfortunately, I've found the Vivobarefoot shoe sizing to be a little inconsistent between shoe styles. Utah in the fall is awesome! I'll be on the lookout for the email!
Not sure if you’ll see my comment. I really want to buy the vivobarefoot trackers! I’m worried though about the insulated insole being way too hot. Can this be replaced with a regular insole for summer months?
Hi Amanda, thanks for your video. When ordering on Vivo website, I used their foot measurement system. For the Tracker II FG shoe, they advised me to choose one size larger. Did you have the same issue? I'm not sure anymore which size should l choose. Thanks for your help!
In the UK it's mainly sub tropical which sounds funny, UK tropical?. Most of the year it is warm or very humid and very wet. We wear boots most of the year because of wet ground, with this comes wet or damp feet so many hikers have foot issues i.e. Athletes foot or some kind of foot fungi. So trail runners are not so popular in the UK.
Thanks for the vid very well done. Question. So I'm a size 10 us but vivo doesn't seam to offer half sizes. At least for men. Should I get the size 10 or go all the way up to 11?
Another great video in the bag, Amanda! I'm partial to trail runners (Altra or Salomon), but recently I sprained my ankle on a hike and so I've temporarily reverted to Merrell boots while my ankle heals up. They both have their place. I must say I'm curious about the VivoBarefoot shoes. Have you ever tried the Vibram FiveFingers?
Do you wear socks with your Vivobarefoots? I know that they say you don't have to but I was wondering if they caused any more blistering or irritation without the sock.
Hey I love the two vivo shoes you mentioned. But they are completely out of stock! Is there anywhere else to get them, or some in-stock minimalist shoes? Thanks!
These are the only minimalist shoes that I have, so I'm not sure of any other brands or retailers. I think they're usually pretty quick about re-stocking things though, but you might be able to email them and see when they're expecting more!
Hah. We are of the same mind. Barefoot boots and runners depending.... but honestly I've been obsessed with my Bedrocks as well. If it's warm enough they're all I wear now. It's kinda weird and wonderful.
Hi ! My husband and I are going to Breckenridge Co the first week of Oct. We are form Louisiana and don’t do much hiking . We plan on going hiking in Brec, nothing vigorous. What would be a good shoe to bring to Colorado for easy to mild hiking?
Thanks for the review and information. I think durable hiking boots are also a good idea when carrying a heavy pack. Less likely to roll an ankle. I also find the ankle support of hiking boots helpful when descending a 14'er. This puts a lot of stress on ankles. But hey, I've seen people running up mountain trails in sandals. Not for me. :-)
Thank you for this review :) I have a qst: how is the grip in this shoes on wet rocks/slippery surface? I have never tried vivobarefoot before, but I have Zero shoes - they are comfy and really good shoes, but too slippery on wet rocks/montain terrain. I would like to try vivo
I have the NRS neoprene sandal sock and it worked great for me. I haven't tried any other neoprene socks, so I'm not sure how it would compare to other styles and brands.
Hey girl, how do your feet not kill you hiking in that brand? (Note: I haven't tried it yet) Just curious without any cushion or foot plate... Nice vid!
Hey Caroline, if you have flat feet because (fallen arches) you can explore strengthening both the planta fascia itself as well as the glute medius (outside of your butt) that aids in raising arches and building a stronger more durable foot. Without that, I wouldn't recommend barefoot shoes. As Amanda said it might be a good idea to see a podiatrist but be aware that foot inserts and supportive inner soles are basically a band aid solution to the (potentially) underlying problem. A good podiatrist will asses your hip/core and leg strength imbalances first before blanketly recommending custom inserts that can be profoundly expensive and only postpone the real problem 😒
the moment where you realize you need a supershoe that is a bit of all the above 🤦🏻♀️ i too prefer minimalist shoes because i like to feel the earth under my feet, i feel it gives me better balance and traction, but i’m also short, so i like a little heel. lord help me😂
Amanda you’re so inspiring and helpful! I’m 32 and just started hiking 3 years ago. I fell in love with it but feel like I’m a bit behind learning all the things. It’s so disappointing that Vivo would stop making what seems like a perfect hiking shoe. Do they make anything comparable right now? I’m in need of a new pair. My Merrell Trail Glove 4 pair has been great for a couple years but they’re falling apart. I just got Luna sandals and I absolutely love them. Great for creek crossing and hiking and every day use. They seem similar to your sandals. As much as I love wearing these barefoot styles, my feet get sore around mile 7-8 so I haven’t hiked more than 9-10 miles in a day. Is this normal? Will my feet adjust?
Based on my experience with the barefoot shoes, I would say it's pretty normal. My feet used to get tired and it took about 3-4 months to really get adjusted to the barefoot style shoes. Now that I've been using them for years, and I can go for long backpacking trips without any issues. So happy to hear that you love hiking!! It's never too late to get started, and trust me, I've been hiking and backpacking for years and I'm still learning new things! 😁
Mountaineering boots, full hiking boots, mid-height boots, trail shoes, advance shoes, trail runners. Sorry there a lot more options than just a trail runner/hiking boot binary. Those shoes you are calling trail runners are actually over the ankle trail shoes.
Wow , you had an interesting childhood of personal challenges .... "how far can I walk on the rocks on the driveway ?? What's next ,, a board with nails or a hot bed of coals ?? ...lol... not judging... It appears that you like a modified moccasin ,, not really unreasonable at all...I don't think most people put much thought or time into the process ,, I know I don't...but barefoot ?? ...not for me.... ..I have been on trails and in the high backcountry for many years and still don't understand why many hikers buy extremely expensive hiking footwear and do water crossings in them.... and not use a separate water shoe/sandal that could double as a camp shoe...the needed drying time or hiking with wet feet doesn't make sense to me ,, not to mention the premature failure and damage to good boots...I guess times have changed ,, with the throw. away mentality or easy money... Thank You for your thoughts well stated .....and always stay safe....

Great vid, real leather boots it is.. Thanks : )
BAREFOOT
Hiking boots are definitely not waterproof. Careful. They tend to keep moisture trapped in
