How to grow Almond Trees - in the UK

- Often prized as only blossom tree, but have you thought about growing it for its deliciously sweet and oily nuts?
They ripen late in the Autumn, emerging from furry capsules that look like small peaches, to which this tree is closely related.
It's mid-October and Rob gets excited harvesting his fourth crop of beautiful sweet nuts in their furry capsules from one of the forest garden's two resident 'Ingrid' almond trees.
Cultivation is reasonably straightforward, but to get the best from an almond tree you must give careful consideration to siting, for this isn’t a tree you can plant just anywhere and expect it to thrive.

Interesting, clear and all the fun in this video with the folk-tale-ish storytelling🤩
Also love the whole atmosphere very much😊✨
And how useful it is for people to having knowledge and fun to plant the tree.
Thank you, Yen! I'm pleased you appreciate the atmosphere and style 👌😌 I love your new profile picture/logo by the way 👍😊
@@robsdiscovery Thank you, Rob! I'm creating my brand for people to learn more CG technique😆 New logo and color might be much easier to remember it!
As an enthusiast of learning (everything???), I do appreciate your work of the Forest Garden. You're one of the pionners of sharing all of these knowledge🧙♂️🧙♂️
This guy is a dreamboat of nature appreciation 😍I just discovered I have an almond tree after living in my Southern California home for a year. It doesn't produce much. It's rather young. But I'm trying to prune it and take care of it. Thanks for the entertaining video ❤
You're most welcome 😊 I'm glad you enjoyed the video and I do hope your tree brings you an abundant harvest in the coming years 😊 I've never been called a dreamboat of nature appreciation before!! 😄 Thanks 😁
Almonds are definitely my most favorite of nuts !!
Thanks for sharing…I must plan on planting nut trees this spring(Nebraska 🇺🇸)
Such a pleasant and wholesome channel… a pure joy to watch…Your voice and mannerisms are very alluring…
Tomorrow is my birthday… and thanksgiving is this week …
Happy Thanksgiving!!!!
So many blessings… much to be thankful for 🙏🏻😊💕
Thank you very much, Cindy!
Let us all know how you get on with your nut trees, if you think of it 🌳 I do hope you had a splendid birthday! 🎂 And Happy Thanksgiving!! 🤗 Even though it's seldom celebrated in England I've much to give thanks for today 🙏😌
Happy birthday! ❤️ Happy thanksgiving day! A bit late, but from heart.
What an inspiring video Rob about Almond trees! I so want to grow an almond tree now!
The pink blossom now in March is so beautiful too❤
Thank you, Jane 😊 I hope you find yourself some fine & productive specimens! 🌲😁
Never seen almond trees and its fruiting. Thank you for sharing friend. You gave me detailed information about Almond fruits. My like and support.
You're most welcome, Chandra 😊 I'm so glad you found it useful 🌴🌰
This is the first video of yours that I've watched and it's so helpful. You cover so much; soil type, sighting, pruning, harvest, etc in just one video and in a lovely way that's so easy to listen to and absorb. Thank you so much for sharing your food forest, I'm trying to make one in my garden in Berkshire.
Thank you so much for saying that 🙏😊 and I'm so glad it's helped! 🤗 I can't always say the same for my previous videos but I hope you enjoy at least some of them too.
All the best with your project! 🌳🌱😊
Video should be called "How to live a happy life on a farm. Almonds included." 🙂
Awww, that's a lovely thing to say 😌
So very nutty! Hilarious and informative. Instant subscribe! Thank you for the laughs😂😂😂🤣🤣
Haha! Thanks Mae 🤪😁
This was so interesting thankyou. I’m in the very early process of planting my fruit 🌳 forest. Just planted a Victoria plum tree in our very tiny sloping back garden. Your videos are fun and educational 😃
Thank you very much, BlissMeeUp! Fun & education is exactly what I was aiming for so I'm so glad you said so 😁 If ever you have anything of your project online please send me the link! I'd love to see 🌳🍏😊
@@robsdiscovery thanks Rob yes I’ll definitely tag you when it becomes more established 🍏🌳 😃
I’ve just bought some almonds to grow. Thank you ❤️
Love the video, great jokes 🤣 Just got an almond tree, really helpful
Thanks! 😊
Excellent 🌳 A fruitful harvest to you! 🌰🤗
Great video Rob! Ive got a few to catch up on. Love the music in this video as well.
Thanks! As much as I love composing my own I've now paid for a year's subscription to use more professional music tracks to add an extra hint of quality and to save me time! I'm so glad you approve 🎶🤗
Your videos make me wish to have a garden!
Awww, thank you Maria 😊 How close are you to having your own garden? Do you plan to at some point? 🌱
@@robsdiscovery unfortunately not so Close. Maybe one day!
Hedgegrow Medicine book is also on my shelf too.😀 Nice vid, subbed...
I have 3 almond trees from my village in Croatia in my back yard in London . Doing really well . Massive foliage and height .
I loved that! It was REALLY interesting!!
Such a short lifespan! I guess that’s also why Almonds are so expensive.
Will the trees actually die? Or do they just stop producing fruit/nuts?
Please let us know when the time comes!
Nice to see the geese chilled out 😂
The footage of them popping out of the grass AND back down into the grass simultaneously was soo funny! Were they up to good? 😀
Just found another autocorrect mistake haha! 🤣
Thank you very much, J! I'll let you know in approximately five years! 😄 but I think they're suppose to just spontaneously die! 😱
Yeah, those geese were almost certainly up to mischief 🙄 (They all looked up at once because I called them with a 'click' of the tounge but removed the sound after 😉)
I live in North Wiltshire, Almond/Walnut & Hazel nut trees are quite common for some reason.
After reading up on Aaron's rod I am keen to establish an almond tree in my Scottish garden as part of my new project to grow biblical plants.
What a fascinating and worthwhile project, Ian 📙🫒🌴 If you document the process or start a TH-cam channel about please let us know! 😊
Love your Channel/content and delivery. Is your Forest Garden a place one can visit?? 🪴🐛🐔🪱🐝
I suffer with Anxiety! Your home is beautiful
Thank you 😊 It's taken quite some time to become so. I'm sorry to hear about your anxiety.
Will you explore the skills of... Composting... in the forest garden. ?
Maybe, John. It interests me greatly and I make a lot of wonderful stuff in other people's gardens but not really my own 🤔 Maybe I ought to document my work beyond my own garden? 🤔 I did make a very short video last week featuring compost for my mum's channel, Rosie's Smallholding...
@@robsdiscovery Hello Rob. Personally I think you should stay within the forest garden, Narrative.. Conventional gardening has been done to death, so to speak... The future generations will garden in a far more Nature - Habitat perspective, and not just finely cut lawns with formal flower beds.... Gardening for the continuities of Nature and indeed her creatures.... Not just for the delight of the human... Eye.. *
Nice! 😀🤘🏼
Thanks, Ashley 😊
Hi there! Just wondering how many almonds do you get from one tree in a year (on a 5 year old tree). And also, do you harvest them all in the Fall and usually all in the same month?
Thank you
Hello! I've never actually quantified or weighed them but I estimate about three quarters of a bucket of almonds per tree per year. Once they've been shelled, I mean, the volume would be waaay more in their capsules! 😄 And yes, the harvest is usually all over within a month.
Beautiful Chickens
Sky is red this Morning in Liverpool
Shepherd's warning 🌅😉
In Australia there are many cockatoos and parrots that would eat those way before they are ripe.
Would you like to try growing them otherwise? 🦜 I wonder how that could be prevented 🤔
You mentioned you have 2 almond trees. Did they both get almonds?
They did/do 😊
Could you recommend a source to purchase almond trees (on the correct root stock) in somerset?
I got mine so long ago I don't remember where from now, I'm sorry to say 😕 Rocky Mountain Nurseries (near Wells) would be worth a call/visit though. I suspect they were from there 🤔
Thank you. Rocky Mountain is my go to centre. Was there last week looking for aquatic soil but with no luck unfortunately. I did spy lots of trees so will go back to look more closely. @@robsdiscovery
I have an Ingrid almond tree and it produces lots of almonds, but they're not sweet at all. Any advice?
Sometimes this happens, it means they contain a toxin and shouldn't be eaten raw. Toasting them will make them safe as well as sweet. Sorry, I've only just seen your comment! One year late!
@@robsdiscovery Ah okay, I'll have to try that. That is if I have any, now that the squirrels have discovered my trees :/
@pleasestandby5954 Noooo! Not the squirrels! 🐿️
@@robsdiscovery I love the cute bastards, but they're rather voracious
Squirrel dont grab the almonds before you do? How?
The squirrels don't recognise them as edible yet. Not in my area anyway. Plus there are the 'decoy' hazelnuts nearby 😉
❤
I thought unprocessed almonds are poisonous. Is it the outer layers that are poisonous and not the nut? Once you take them out of the casing then you can just eat them?
Yep, just unwrap them, crack them and devour those soft sweet nuts 😋 I don't know if the rest is poisonous but I shouldn't think so 🤔 It's certainly not tasty though! 😄
Hi, the brown peel of almonds contains tannin that can prevent absorption of nutrients.
My dad (who grew up in South Africa ) remembers that when he was a kid him and his friends would knock almond trees and they all would come crumbling down , he would then sell them to the local shops for a bag of chips , he said it was a total scam .
What a brilliant tale 😊

I love Plums! The day my Mum gave Birthbto me she thought she had eaten too many Plums! I was Born 14 September
Happy Birthday for Wednesday 🎂
Would be lovely place for Wedding photos? A Blessing for Child
I agree 💒🌳🌺😌
Plant two more each year!
If only there were enough space!
I have big interest in Kenya 🇰🇪 have you seen Nairobi Rivers? Once a Beauty site . Now full of Human Waste . Chemical waste. Even Human Bodies! Many in slums no Toilets! They have Flying Toilets plastic bags full of Human Waste. All going into the Seas
I'm not familiar with the Nairobi rivers but it sounds like a very sad situation 😔 Is this related to almonds at all? 🤔
