- DDay 80 - 6 June Livestream - Defending Normandy
With Niels Henkemans
Part of our DDay and Battle of Normandy series
• DDay and the Battle of...
Also part of our 80th Anniversary Series
• 80th Anniversary Special
In today's show we look at the 91. Luftlande Infanterie-Division stationed in the area behind Utah beach. This is based on work from the new book: Defending Normandy Vol.1A, which ooks at the role of the LXXXIV. A.K. in the evolution of the defence of Normandy, starting in 1941. It also examines infantry divisions in general and two in particular during the fighting in the summer of 1944. By focusing on formations, the series provides a deeper insight into the fighting than can be achieved by a traditional campaign approach. Vol.1B will continue with four more divisions.
Niels Henkehams is a history writer specialized in the fighting in Normandy in 1944.

Niels is so detailed, it is a joy to listen to him. Geweldige show Niels!
Thanks you. Great to hear!
Catching up on all the wonderful comments. Really appreciate the kind words! I know there were questions being asked in the sidebar, but didn't have time to address them all. I will check the replies to this message though, so just just respond to this one ;-) Oh, and the book WILL be out later this month!
Once again, Niels has done the business! The scholarship, attention to EVERY detail and the methodology on display are truly exemplary!
Thank you, Paul, and thank you, Niels!😊
Neils deserves every success with his book (s)...suspect it will become a benchmark standard and of use to many other students of history! Chapeau.
Fifteen years of work as I understand it to produce the first volume. A remarkable effort by Niels. The watchers and side bar recommendations from Woody and many others far more knowledgable on these matters is self explanatory.
Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant scholarly work!! This is a model of using deep, exhaustive research to clarify history. The whole Falley narrative, for example, deceptively starts with a forensic sketch of the Chateau de Bernaville scene, and then goes full circle from Mont Saint Michel to Mont Saint Michel, to throw a wrench into what had been a cut and dried story.
I was stuck in a massive traffic jam in the back roads at Hiesville with very intermittent internet, during this shownon last June 6. Boy did I miss a fantastic show!!
Woody thinks he has a weird man crush on Neils. He needs to fall in line 😁
This needed to be two hours, and felt like ten minutes. Brilliant.
Thanks Niels and Paul - wonderful and book will be pre-ordered (although I am not a Normandy guy).
Great presentation Niels! Really good for many to see what we can encounter as researchers. Different sources (good or bad ones), map name errors, contradictions, unknowns... well presented in a clear manner here. Looking forward to the book.
Will defo be getting this series of books by niels and the maps are outstanding
Just for the record: only the map on slide 3 is actually from the book. I've used the other maps in the presentation as research materials to draw up new ones. As interesting as the original maps are, they are too inconsistent in style to use in the book, and they generally do not show the terrain well enough. Most of the maps you'll find in the book are directly based on original German maps, but turned into a modern version to bring together the best of both worlds. I've also created maps myself, especially when I want to cover more than one day. German maps are typically only situation maps, not period maps.
Also paul woodadage you are a credit to history oustanding man and ww2 tv channel.
This book is on my wishlist since the first time I did hear from this project 10+ years ago. Well done Niels and good to see this teaser well received on Pauls fantastic channel!
Details on a another level !! 👏🏻👏🏻
Ordered the book. Thank you.
Enjoying your GTS Utah Beach videos!
Pre-ordered Niel's book two weeks ago, can't wait. And with regards to Paul's 'gamechanger' remark I can imagine that I'll be screening the index of any forthcoming book about D-day/Normandy. And if they don't reference this book I reckon I won't buy it and/or can't take it seriously enough.
That's great to hear. If the next generation of books is written with a better understanding of the German side, all will benefit. And if my books can contribute to that I'll be very happy!
Wonderful work, very well presented. Thank you.
This is fascinating stuff. I have pre-ordered the book and am waiting for it to be released.
Missed another live one....sometimes living in the Mountain time zone doesn't pay off. Catching up now, Woody.
Very informat8ve !
14:11 Ost Regiment Bunyachenko, Commander later became head of the main division of the ROA, who surrendered to the Americans in Czechia. His repatriation was in part due to his fighting in Normandy.
Please prove more 🧐
This was good.
How is the book for those who have it?
