    An exceptional account of the 35-800s and their brief visit to SA. Still can't believe they never passed before my lens! Thoroughly enjoyed the production and I hope you share this on the Queensland FB page. I'm sure the guys there will enjoy it too.

    When the Africa Rail & Traction Service locos worked through my area I regret not giving them a kodak moment each time I saw them. Great documentary Piet!!!

    Great post mate. So interesting to see this footage of these locos getting a second life in such a different environment in South Africa. They’d certainly been worked hard in their former life on the coal fields of Queensland.

    It is probably worth mentioning that all the locomotives with the Queensland Rail/ Aurizon numbering of 2202 to 2210 did not normally work general traffic in Queensland after electrification , but were assigned to haul nickel ore from the Greenvale nickel mine west of Townsville to the Yabulu nickel refinery near the coast. I'm guessing they began this work around 1986/1987. They continued at this task till somewhere in the next decade when the mine shut down. They had large fuel tanks which made it impossible to use them on general traffic as the extra weight of the fuel combined with the size of the locomotive could not be accommodated by the existing rail lines and bridges at the time. However the purpose built rail line from Greenvale to Yabulu coped well with the heavier locomotives as well as the nickel ore wagons. If any of these locomotives had to be moved via the main line and enter general traffic, for whatever reason, they were de fuelled significantly at Yabulu. There were two consists of 4 locomotives running continuously. If one of the 2200 locomotives had to be removed from a consist it was usually replaced with a 2170. The 2170 locomotives had similar power to the 2200 class but because they were used in general traffic they had smaller fuel tanks. Therefore they required fuelling more often. I believe that these locomotives were similar to the SD 40-2 locomotives used in the USA at that time, but they were not turbocharged. I was an electrical fitter employed by Queensland Rail at the time, and I was one of many staff used to service these locomotives.

    Nice compilation. These ex-queensland 35 diesel locomotives are seriously rare. I think they are similar to the ones Rovos Rail uses here in Pretoria. Wonder why transnet felt the need to import second hand diesels locomotives though?

    • @CMDModels1
      @CMDModels1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the long and the short, they were bought in a corrupt Gupta deal. Transnet paid nearly double per loco than what Grindrod, Rovos etc. paid and Gupta linked firms pocketed the extra.
