  • In this video I show you how to wire a Lutron Caseta PD-5ANS Smart Switch in a 4 Way or Multi-Location Switch Setup where the Smart Switch itself is installed at one of the 4 Way Switch locations. This same wiring would also work to install a Lutron Original Dimmer Switch in the same location. To mimic the multi-switch functionality with different switches at different locations, you would then substitute those mechanical switches with Pico Remotes.
Lutron unfortunately does not provide instructions for this specific setup. They only provide instructions for you to install this at one of the 3 Way Switch Locations. You may need to do this because the PD-5ANS requires a neutral wire and you may not have a neutral at the 3 Way Switch location. Alternatively, you may simply want the Smart Switch at a specific location where the 4 Way Switch is located.
These Lutron Smart switches can be purchased on Amazon as follows:
    Smart Switch PD-5ANS: amzn.to/3ZxbHBn
Smart Switch PD-6ANS (higher electrical load): amzn.to/3H7K8Yc
Original Smart Dimmer (including Pico Remote and Wall Plate): amzn.to/3CPzgLU
DON'T FORGET TO SWITCH OFF YOUR BREAKER!

Thank you for sharing this install. This is exactly what I was looking for. The wife didn't want the 4 way switch in our kitchen to be the remote. She wanted the smart Diva dimmer to be at that spot. Without your video, I couldn't have known how to do it without burning down the house lol. Thank you again and have a blessed day!

I feel sorry for the next guy that opens up these boxes 20 years down the road. "What the ????? did the previous owner do?"

So I want to be sure I understand because we want to apply this. You had 3 total switches in the beginning and ended with 4 (the pico remote on the wall in the garage?)??

Wow. Confusing as hell 👎 never heard the term “traveller wire” either. Load/line wires is what we use

I guess you haven’t installed a 3 way switch then… Line and Load apply to a normal switch, but if you have another switch as part of the circuit, the “traveller” wire is the wire that runs to that other switch (in addition to Line and Load)

Line refers to the power from the panel, load refers to the light fixture (load is always the item what is being powered on - in this case the garage lights), the “travelers” simply provide power between the switches, but the switch on/off position dictates which traveler sends the current and if the current will be sent to the light.

to understand 3 way, 4 way (or X way) circuit, this video does an amazing job:
