I am interested in pursuing a career in court reporting. I've read that the general stenography machine training can take anywhere from 2-4 years (maybe longer, depending on the commitment). In your experience, do you think it is wise for someone to pursue oral stenography to get into the field first (if it takes less time) and then pursue learning on a steno machine? Thank you!
Honestly, you will be so busy working that you will likely not have time to finish the machine training. When I switched from machine to voice, I thought I would go back and finish certifying on the machine. However, I have not had the time. Now, I am focused on making my voice writing the best it can be. You need to do what's right for you.
Some do. it just depends on their workload. I don't have very many transcripts in my court, so I still scope my own work. But I do have a proofreader to look it over before I send it out

What does CCR mean?
It stands for Certified Court Reporter.
Do voice writers use scopists?
