Raising Muscovy Ducks in The Garden

- We attempted to raise our Muscovy ducks in our main permaculture garden!
Muscovy Ducks: are restricted to south Texas and other limited south points, but many domesticated versions can be seen in parks and farms across much of North America.
Wild Muscovy Ducks are glossy black with bold white wing patches and are forest dwellers that nest in tree cavities. Their range expanded into Texas in the 1980s; feral populations also exist in Florida.
They are the ONLY duck that is NOT derived from the mallard duck. In fact, they are not even technically considered a duck at all 🤷🏽♀️. They are a large waterfowl, something between a goose and a duck.
The Muscovy has much to offer: eggs, meat and great pest control. They are low maintenance, quiet and fit in very well with chickens and other fowl. You can even keep them without a pond or stream nearby. Muscovies will be just as happy with a small paddling pool as their water source.
Muscovy ducks aren't nearly as wild about water as mallard-derived breeds, but they still need plenty of clean water daily. - ภาพยนตร์และแอนิเมชัน
The ducks are such cutie nice garden update
Thank you! We are so bummed that they couldn’t live there
I am sorry for your plant lose, but thanks for letting us know what they like
You’re welcome :)
Nice!! We have a few that I should run through the garden! Thanks!!
They definitely took care of the squash bug problem after 2 days 😂
@@JesusLovingHomesteader nice! They didn't eat your plants?
@@hiddenvalleyfarmstead If you watch the video, you’ll see that they did eat our plants.
Oh my goodness, they did more damage than our chickens. lol!
They were having the time of their life 😂. I could not believe how much they ate
I live in a medium size apt complex in Florida. A mom had 15!!! eggs hatched but we lost 9 babies in that first couple weeks. We are now down to 6 siblings and triplets that are about a month older. we have 6 apartments that feed the ducks and take care of them. They are just too cute. I am trying to see if I can get better food for them, I don't want to feed them the no nos
Aww I love that your apartments help care for them ! You can go to tractor supply or feed stores and get duck feed. You can also feed them grapes, peas, sweet corn, bananas, flaxseed, sunflower seeds, wheat berries, and oats.
🦆 How are they dealing with the heat/drought? Do they ever bother your kids/ dogs?
They are the sweetest! They love the kids, and us. They just got used to us. The dog doesn’t like them, so they stay separated.
Muscovy ducks can eat a whole banana tree if they get the chance. They eat bugs first then plants.
Yes I believe it! They ate so many of the bugs! That I am thankful
I have a rough idea of the area where you live (not the exact city). We have a much more restrictive city that only allows 4 hens and no other livestock, and even then, placement and size of the coop is very restrictive. I don't have any yet. I submitted a permit application in spring of 2020, but it either got lost or rejected without notifying me. I did make one estimation on distance to a fence that I should have just taken the time to measure.
It’s so frustrating when the city doesn’t get back to you!!! I actually have a park in my city that is full of Muscovy ducks, I’ve been trying to get the city to allow me to rehome a lot of the drakes there. I’ve heard nothing
We are having the same issue with them. Where did you get the net from?

@@JesusLovingHomesteader thank you 🙂
@@JesusLovingHomesteader Thank you :)
If you do cross breeding of Muscovy duck others
I don’t, because I don’t want our ducks to be sterile
