A little backstory for you, Salvo. The movie director told Prince that they needed a song for a montage in the movie. This is the song he quickly threw together. The actress visited Prince while he was recording it and she saw Prince was upset. He said, "I can't do what I want to do." (With this song) She said to him, "Why can't you?" I know a lot of people prefer other Prince music, but to me, "Purple Rain" is a masterpiece of an album. I love every song from the album. Love "Let's Go Crazy" and "I Would Die 4 U" but any song on the album is a banger. The concert portions of the movie are brilliant.
The album Purple Rain is probably the most recognizable since it was so widely acclaimed and also the first time so many of us got to see an album that had a movie too. I'm also a Pink Pink Floyd fan and they did it with the movie "More" and with "The Wall".
I was 14 when this song came out and let me tell you I was obsessed with prince and I mean obsessed. I had his posters all over my bedroom, knew every song by heart seen purple rain hundreds of times and I remember standing in front of my TV when this video would come on MTV practicing that dance and till this day I can still do that dance! Amazing artist. You wouldn’t believe the amount of songs he wrote. He wrote Nothing Compares To You which several artists covered including an amazing version by Prince himself and others including Chris Cornell. He performed some songs and sold others to other artists. He was an incredible and underrated guitarist. So funky and fun live! ❤😢
Prince understood drums, guitar, bass, keyboard and most importantly production. He knew EQ, which means he had perfect pitch. His vocals are THE best.
You should do a movie review of Purple Rain. Although it is not listed as autobiographical, it might as well be because it is heavily based on Prince’s life. It gives insight as to how his life shaped his music and how his music shaped his life. Both are true. Plus, how many other artists / actors can say that their very first movie was about them and that they wrote and performed almost all of the music in it. That alone is a 1 in a million accomplishment.
I remember Prince from the very beginning…early days at First Avenue…we just knew we were witness to something special, extraordinary. Please react to EVERYTHING “Purple Rain”…the song, the whole album and the movie. You won’t regret it.
The bass is definitely a stylistic choice…. with Prince everything was a choice! His music was never my cup of tea, but he was definitely brilliant and innovative. Seems like he was a class act too… I actually live about 1.5 miles from his home (which was turned into a museum after his death)…. Anyway he’s said to have randomly showed up at area schools, hand them a $25k check and saying “here it’s for your arts programs”
In my opinion, this the greatest song ever made . It was my introduction to prince . It was his first song that I heard . At that time, I was a huge Michael Jackson fan and used to think no one's better than him . Found this song and it changed my mind instantly . After that there was no stopping. I started listening more of his songs and to this day I think he is the best musician ever .
With Prince, his official music videos are works of art. Like his music. If you can find live concert videos, that’s the way to go, every performance is unique. You should check out his (2007) Super Bowl XLI Halftime Show…Purple Rain - in the pouring rain…literally.
Well what to say... , if you’re starting to browse his discography, you’ll find a lot of hidden gems, apart from the most well known songs ( and yes, until now, my favourites are Temptation, Condition of the heart, Something in the water, Annie Christian, Crystal ball... I like weird stuff. I’ll add Damn u for the very relaxing vocal jazz, foggy ambiance, and the incredible vocal range he displays on this track) Or for more guitar, I’m yours and Bambi are nice early tracks. Endorphinemachine is also pretty cool. That man is able to rock a full stadion, as well as to mesmerize a small audience playing an acoustic guitar, sitting on a chair. Or to enjoy his own concert, asking the audience to join him on stage, all of them bouncing together ( while I’m bouncing along in front of my computer obviously) Welcome on board, once you book your flight on " Seduction 747” you’re in for a loooooong travel (and let’s see how long it will take until you find the reference). Enjoy your trip!
FYI There is the album version which is longer and it has Prince doing more of his signature wailing and screaming, a organ keyboard solo and guitar solo towards the end. React to his songs I Wanna Be Your Lover, Controversy, Dirty Mind, Lady Cabdriver, If Iui Was Your Girlfriend, Little Red Corvette, 1999, Let's Go Crazy, I Would Die 4 U, Purple Rain, Beautiful Ones, Pop Life, Erotic City, Raspberry Beret, Kiss, Mountains, Girls And Boys, U Got The Look, Sign O' Times, I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man, Alphabet Street, Batdance, Thieves In The Temple, Get Off, Cream, Diamonds And Pearl, 7 and My Name Is Prince please. It's "Maybe I'm just too demanding. Maybe I'm just like my father. 2,4. Maybe you're just like my mother. She's never satisfied. Why do scream at each other. This is what it sounds like when doves cry." You should react to his movie Purple Rain. And react to his proteges Vanity 6, Apollonia 6, The Time and the Family. Prince has written songs for other artists like the Bangles' Manic Monday or they covered his songs like Chaka Khan's I Feel 4 U and Sinead O'connor's Nothing Compares 2 U among others.
I still have a "Love Symbol" sticker on the back of my car. Amazing song - one of the only to hit #1 without a baseline. He was a genius and lost WAY too soon. I seriously grieve on April 21 every year, like the loss of a family member. If you get into the Prince rabbit hole, start with his early stuff (disco-ish) and work your way through the albums. You can hear how his music evolved through the decades. RIP, GOAT.
Thank you Salvo, as yet, another great reaction! Prince is the pride and joy of Minnesota, although Bob Dylan came in a close second... I am anticipating a HUGE dump of NEW PRINCE music some time in the near future, as he left a boatload of unfinished material in his vaults... always looking forward, the man was way before his time!! Another legend gone way too soon... blessings my friend...
Awesome reaction Salvo. I love prince. Thank you for the memories. I sang with the whole song. All of his songs were top hits. The scenes in this were in his Purple Rain movie. By the way... Stopped looking for Geoff's new Sound of Silence video reactions when I came across this one 😉.
Absolutely love Prince and this is one of my favourites! Loved your reaction, it made me smile that he’s still impressing people from up above 🥰 He could be very controversial at times, maybe avoid “Darling Nicky” lol 😆
Prince has so many great songs, he's amazing. I'd suggest Le Grind from his infamous Black Album if you want a great party anthem. Definitely a toe tapper!
This is commercial Prince and awesome, but it pales in comparison to his less known live work. Check out “I don’t trust you anymore” live for a jazzy Prince.💜☔️
This video cuts off the ending. :( Try to catch the full version when you get the chance. Also, some of the scenes in this video are from the movie Purple Rain, starring Prince. Also worth checking out--and full of good music.
You will find out with Prince’s music why he’s considered a genius. He thinks on many levels and it shows in his work. You should react to “”Let’s Go Crazy” next. It’s also from the Purple Rain soundtrack.
I was 16 when this song was released…it was pioneering! The fact that you are able to enjoy it for the first time now affirms my belief that some music is timeless. While I LOVE this song, so many others stand out to be enjoyed. “Do MeBaby,” DMSR (my personal favorite), “Lady Cab Driver”…I could go on and on. As a fellow lover of music, I enjoy many different genres, styles, etc…To me, what sets your channel apart is that you do too! Keep being your authentic self!! 👍🏼👏🏼🥰
LOVE ❤ PRINCE. THE EPITOME OF COOL. And the one thing I really liked about Prince was that he took something out of the Black community that no other cultures worldwide has and made it popular throughout the world. And thing was "Cool." The Black community has always been poor and still is today. But just like what African Americans slave did with scraps of food that was thrown out of masters kitchen and changed those thrown foods into Fried Chicken 🍗. Gumbo. Collar Greens. Blackeye Peas....they also transformed the way they dressed and behaved and talked as if we had a million bucks and created style of "Cool. " And Prince takes that style of "Cool " and magnifies it to the world. Love it. Love it. LOVE ❤ IT!!!
First note: Anything you try from Prince, try it better in LIVE recordings. Prince did everything in this track, I mean he played every instrument, programmed the drums, he sung lead and backing vocals, recorded, produced, mixed... The usual... About the bass. This is not his only big hit without a bass, KISS and BLACK SWEAT are another ones. He thought it didn't need it and it was such a brave challenge in times where thing are solidly established: you know, "a song must have a drums, bass, keys, guitars and vocals". In the late eighties and early nineties (at least) when this song was played live, the band use to add a heavy and notorious bass line at mid-to-end of the song.
The record label told Prince that this wouldn't be a hit because it had no bass. Prince was strong in his visions and proved them wrong to say the least lol. You'll like the extended version and or album version even more dude, which will get blocked on youtube sadly.
Amazing multi-instrumentalist, performer, songwriter, who was also very proficient in the recording studio. He usually tracked and mixed his own vocals. He used an engineer to work faster. He was the consummate professional. He was the musicians musician. There was a reason why he always received a standing ovation at awards shows and appearances in the presence of his peers. The only truly incomparable artist I've ever seen.
It has no bass and it works! And he did it "on purpose" Same happened in Kiss a couple of years after, when the WB CO. listened to it were very relectant to put it out, they said it was like a demo, without a bass... and it went to number one again. He was so ahead of its times.
This song was the first song that skyrocketed into super stardom! I most of had this on repeat that it drove my parents crazy! It was all about Purple Rain and my favorite artist, Prince!!
Prince produced and composed his own music … he did it w no bass on purpose .. he’s a genius ahead of his time !! And he can play over 20 instruments!! It’s crazy ! He and Michael Jackson had a great rivalry but respected each other and when MJ died Prince locked himself in his room for days and wouldn’t speak to anyone .. this was the beginning of his downfall because he started having major hip problems and got dependent on opioids !! Why do all the great ones die before their time ? Not many men have such a phenomenal career wearing make up and high heels and the women loved ❤every thing about it !! Lol 😂I know I did and I’m a white country girl fm TN !! Lol 😂
Prince was a superstar! It's hard to imagine he and his band the Revolution were booded off stage in LA by 90 thousand people when they opened for the Stones in 1981. Not once but twice. Mick encouraged him to hang in there and that he too had been booded and trash thrown at him in the early days. RIP Prince!
You’re exactly right. Prince composed every sound (from every instrument, then taught his band to play what he composed) and then he dropped the bass out and left in the funky strut. He knew it sounded better and was fearless with his music. We followed that man all the way…. shoulders and hips. Get Off!
My first concert, EVER, was Prince and The Revolution, The Purple Rain Tour. 3rd Row Seats at The Rosemont Horizon in Rosemont, IL. 1984 and I was 14 years old. Wow. Wow. Wow. That’s all I can say. Influenced me from that point on. 💜
Except for "Automatic", I recommend you to check out Prince's long (actually the real length) version of his songs that are rarely available on videoclips. And for "Sexy Dancer", the 12'' single version is the real deal compared to the album version, due to his multiple soli on various instruments.
Thanks for another Prince reaction. The album version has a great guitar solo at the end too. If you want early Prince listen to My Love is Forever. I think he was 18 when he wrote that. Played all the instruments and did all the vocals as per his usual back in the day. 💜
Would love to see you do more Prince. By your reaction, I think you have a hell of a journey ahead of you. Prince was the soundtrack to my life. I can remember every time in my life by how I felt through a Prince song. Sometimes His music dictated my life. I am sure there are lot of people who grew up in the 80s Prince fans know exactly what I mean. You have a large catalog to fall in love with. And you will. Please post some of your first time listens. You react to them exactly how I feel, and that is awesome.
You have missed out the whole thing. This is a short version of the video. The full version has 6 minutes in length and it has very attractive solo electric guitar performance by prince followed by insane sounds by Prince for straight 3 minutes. CHECK OUT THE AUDIO VERSION of the original full length song.
The whole Purple Rain album is fire!! (the movie, not so much, IMHO). This is a shortened version of the album track, so you're missing the incredible outro - so I highly recommend checking out the album version! Further tracks: Purple Rain, Let's Go Crazy are absolute MUSTS!
The story behind this song was that initially it was a full and very bombastic production and the record company wanted to release it as such. But Prince wasn't feeling it. So, long time back up singer Jill Jones (The blonde in the bikini in the “1999” music video) asked him how he would have liked the song instead. So as a reply, Prince started to remove everything but the drums and the bare minimum of the keyboard parts. And Jill said, “Hey, it's not up to the record company how your songs should sound, is it?” So Prince put his foot down, the song was released the way you hear it here and was a monster hit. Jill had been right, it was up to Prince himself how that song should sound.
I recommend to look for the extended or album versions of Prince's songs. Allways worth it in my opinion. This was the shorter video version of the song, which unfortunately cuts out the best parts... Nevertheless i really enjoyed your reaction!
Prince will always be my favorite artist. Musical Genius. Savlo, Please react to Motherless Child. A mind blowing intense performance. This is from the sound track Purple Rain. Purple Rain is a great movie.
I’m so sorry you didn’t do the studio version. The ending especially the guitar section is badass. Check out obviously “Purple Rain” but “Batdance” which was the theme song for one of the Batman movies featuring actress Kim Bassinger (ex-wife of Alec Baldwin) who Prince started dating.
Every bit as much a genius as the character of Will Hunting. Similar background of abuse. The story of Thomas Hardy comes to mind. All his great works came during type time with his first wife. She was a very cold and demanding women. After she died he married again to a much more agreeable woman and had a happy life but never wrote anything of value during that period.

Prince was an insanely outstanding guitar player. Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top freaked out when he heard this guitar intro.

I’ll add Damn u for the very relaxing vocal jazz, foggy ambiance, and the incredible vocal range he displays on this track)
Or for more guitar, I’m yours and Bambi are nice early tracks. Endorphinemachine is also pretty cool.
That man is able to rock a full stadion, as well as to mesmerize a small audience playing an acoustic guitar, sitting on a chair. Or to enjoy his own concert, asking the audience to join him on stage, all of them bouncing together ( while I’m bouncing along in front of my computer obviously)
Welcome on board, once you book your flight on " Seduction 747” you’re in for a loooooong travel (and let’s see how long it will take until you find the reference).
This is what it sounds like when doves cry."
You should react to his movie Purple Rain.
I believe this was from the movie Purple Rain. Great song and great movie. Thanks, Salvo, for sharing this😊
I still have a "Love Symbol" sticker on the back of my car. RIP, GOAT.
My favorite prince song
Thank you Salvo, as yet, another great reaction!
Prince is the pride and joy of Minnesota, although Bob Dylan came in a close second... I am anticipating a HUGE dump of NEW PRINCE music some time in the near future, as he left a boatload of unfinished material in his vaults... always looking forward, the man was way before his time!! Another legend gone way too soon... blessings my friend...
Great song. Prince's best in my opinion.
I live that you got into it! Idk but I never get sick of that song no matter how many times I hear it. More Prince please!! You’ll never regret it.
I love
Prince this is my favorite song of
Prince
Awesome reaction Salvo.
I love prince. Thank you for the memories. I sang with the whole song. All of his songs were top hits.
The scenes in this were in his Purple Rain movie.
By the way...
Stopped looking for Geoff's new Sound of Silence video reactions when I came across this one 😉.
Absolutely love Prince and this is one of my favourites! Loved your reaction, it made me smile that he’s still impressing people from up above 🥰
He could be very controversial at times, maybe avoid “Darling Nicky” lol 😆
This is the video edit of When Doves Cry - the album version is 6 minutes long.
Prince has so many great songs, he's amazing. I'd suggest Le Grind from his infamous Black Album if you want a great party anthem. Definitely a toe tapper!
There was no one like him.
This is commercial Prince and awesome, but it pales in comparison to his less known live work. Check out “I don’t trust you anymore” live for a jazzy Prince.💜☔️
He took the bass out last second and said 'they would never believe this' he was right. Nothing like this at the time.
Prince 💜
This video cuts off the ending. :( Try to catch the full version when you get the chance. Also, some of the scenes in this video are from the movie Purple Rain, starring Prince. Also worth checking out--and full of good music.
You should do the whole album😎💜🎶☮
The song Purple Rain has some of the best guitar work ever. Worth a listen
The record label told Prince that this wouldn't be a hit because it had no bass. Prince was strong in his visions and proved them wrong to say the least lol. You'll like the extended version and or album version even more dude, which will get blocked on youtube sadly.
I can still sing this word for word. Another one of my musical heroes and I hate it that he's also gone... Grateful I saw him live back in 1990. LJ
And he did it "on purpose"
Same happened in Kiss a couple of years after, when the WB CO. listened to it were very relectant to put it out, they said it was like a demo, without a bass... and it went to number one again.
He was so ahead of its times.
and 2nd hit was ... Manic Monday...
I always thought "Sign Of The Time" was Prince's best song.
I enjoyed watching you discover this one. One of my fav's by him!
Lol 😂
An absolute musical GENIUS!
This WHOLE Album is Solid, Check out his live version of Jimi Hendrix's version of Red House. If you are a fan of Guitar Riffs you will ENJOY IT
You're right at the end. He could get away with anything cuz he was so confident and talented!
Prince was a superstar! It's hard to imagine he and his band the Revolution were booded off stage in LA by 90 thousand people when they opened for the Stones in 1981. Not once but twice.
Mick encouraged him to hang in there and that he too had been booded and trash thrown at him in the early days.
RIP Prince!
The whole album is fascinating and great.
OMG‼️ In the 80's Prince was HUGE‼️
React to Prince-Lets Go Crazy
Make sure it’s the audio version
Yes, more Prince please, his first hit "I Wanna be Your Lover."
Musical Genius and he is greatly missed😢
the bass has been removed. because the low voice was enough. like in kiss. he played.
Congrats on the 40K🎉
You have missed out the whole thing. This is a short version of the video. The full version has 6 minutes in length and it has very attractive solo electric guitar performance by prince followed by insane sounds by Prince for straight 3 minutes. CHECK OUT THE AUDIO VERSION of the original full length song.
The whole Purple Rain album is fire!! (the movie, not so much, IMHO). This is a shortened version of the album track, so you're missing the incredible outro - so I highly recommend checking out the album version!
Further tracks: Purple Rain, Let's Go Crazy are absolute MUSTS!
Artists are always " intentional." A good one focuses on " detail." That was definitely Prince.
My favorite Prince song! 🥰
Prince played like 20 instruments
He was a musical genius.
The last 2 minutes of the extended version is my favorite 2 minutes on all of TH-cam.
Next Prince song Get Off
We ❤ you prince
Iconic. He removed the bass line! Musical genius!
And Jill said, “Hey, it's not up to the record company how your songs should sound, is it?”
So Prince put his foot down, the song was released the way you hear it here and was a monster hit. Jill had been right, it was up to Prince himself how that song should sound.
Do. Little Red Corvete. Live
Yes he removed the base before he turned the album in to be released
A lot of people don't realize this is a very sexual song. It's hard to detect, but it's there.
Try the live 1985 version of Night Ranger’s Don’t tell me you love me
💜🔥🔥🔥🔥💜
'I think there's a movie that goes along with it.' (Feels more lines forming on my face)
It’s hia best Song. Periodt 😊
The extended version with the guitar solo is the one you want.
We miss him like no other...
"I wanna sing along" - Please don't! 🤣
Wouldn't you say at the very beginning there are "guitar licks"? I believe there was and is at the beginning of 'When Doves Cry"...
