Sam Hornish Jr's Cup Series career wasn't the greatest, but least he'll mostly be remembered for his Indy 500 win and Xfinity success.

Can you please retitle the video to a Cup bust only
NASCAR busts: Darian Gillam
Not a "bust" in Xfinity tho
I wish Darian was specific about his NASCAR career and say his Cup was a bust, but Nationwide/Xfinity was not
If that last caution at Homestead doesn't get extended, Hornish beats Dillon for the 2013 title.
@@IanTheMotorsportsMan_YTHe did
@@Juicyhan1523 well, title-wise
@@IanTheMotorsportsMan_YT That's fair, and it's weird because he has in the past
loved his #77 scheme in the COT era

If he did that then there would be a TH-camr bust black flags matter his TH-camr career would be over I mean it pretty much is already with how fake his videos are
Same with Bubba Wallace, Brandon Jones and Riley Herbst

@@sjs3469 How is having 2 Nascar Cup series win a bust?
Forgot Thad Moffitt
Fun Fact: Sam Hornish also had a niece, Hope that was a part of the NASCAR drive for Diversity program, briefly in the 2010s
In nascar, he didn't do too bad in Xfinity but the cup series was a whole different story
We got a Sam Hornish Bust video before GTA 6
I did grow up watching Sam’s NASCAR Career. Though his Cup career was bad, but honestly more NASCAR fans should focus on his Nationwide/Xfinity Series career.
I also think more fans should look at his IndyCar career as well!
Other than that, Sam was one of those drivers that was amazing in IndyCar, but didn’t do well in Stock Cars (well, Cup).
Hornish's IRL career was a flash in the pan. He benefitted from a high downforce formula car that raced exclusively ovals. He started falling back when more road courses and in a side note also got his dad kicked out of the pit lane after a fight with Tony Kanaan at Mid Ohio.
He got out at the right time.
I think Sam Hornish Jr was a somewhat decent Nationwide/Xfinity Series driver.
Sam Hornish, Jr's Nationwide/Xfinity Series Stats (2006 - 2017):
In 120 Starts, Sam Hornish, Jr got 5 Wins, 38 Top 5s, 64 Top 10s, 9 Poles, Led 1376 of 20096 Laps Ran, 81 Lead Lap Finishes, 17 DNFs, 2 DNQs, An Average Start of 9.3, An Average Finish of 13.7, and A Best Points Finish of 2nd in 2013.
To be fair, Hornish was rushed way too early into Cup. He should've ran a couple of full time Xfinity seasons before jumping into Cup
I think the same thing. Had he ran maybe a few truck races and part time xfinity the first year then maybe 2 full years in xfinity with a few truck starts the first year really get a better understanding of the balance of the stock cars over a indy car. Then a few cup starts the 2nd year then move to cup but still run a few xfinity races especially at tracks both series run at for the extra track time he might have done better. Not a super star of cup but a decent career
Probably should clarify Cup series bust. Almost won an xfinity series championship and won races in the xfinity series.
Cup series? Yes, Xfinity? No way
If we are talking Cup series? Sure. Xfinity, zero chance.
Agreed; his Xfinity career was pretty decent but like a lot drivers over the years, he got pushed to Cup too quickly and paid for it. Then again, in an ideal world he would've stayed in IndyCar a few more years as he was definitely one of the top drivers in his time in IndyCar.
@@MatthewLittle In terms of his Xfinity Series career, he was only 3 points away from doing the same thing Tony Stewart did: win both an IndyCar championship, and a NASCAR Championship.
To this day, the most heartbroken I've been as a NASCAR fan was when he lost the Nationwide championship in 2013 to Austin Dillon by just three points. I've had favorites that have come one spot short of winning championships since (Brad Keselowski in 2020 & Ben Rhodes in 2022) but that one really hurt.
So... being a championship contender in the 2nd tier NASCAR series is now considered a bust? Really? THIS is how deciding what a bust is?
I don’t think you watched the video. He says that he is a bust in CUP not Nationwide
@@jacobrodrigueztxyou didnt see where the original video title just said bust not cup bust he only changed it becuase he got flamed
That Penske Mobil 1 livery was always one of my personal favorites
He should've been Xfinity champ in 2013 and even got a couple wins when he returned for a few races at Iowa and Mid-Ohio. A motorsports legend for sure, but an unquestionable Cup Series bust
Hornish was one of only two drivers who was competitive in IRL before and after the CART teams (Penske, Ganassi, Andretti-Green, Rahal, Fernandez, Mo Nunn) and their drivers started coming over in 2002, 2003 and 2004. (The other driver was Scott Sharp.)
Are you sure about that?
Hornish- yes
Scott sharp- yes
You forgot 2 others.
Do research…. There’s 4 that were good before and after
Another example of being rushed to Cup too quickly. He was so good in the Busch/Nationwide car, had he of stayed there another season he would have probably been ok in Cup. I'm glad you showed that clip from the fall Texas race that year, I was at that race and I think he was about half of the cautions in that race.
6:07 "Franchitti in the wall, and there's Sam Hornish" yep that just about sums up IndyCar drivers attempting NASCAR in the late 2000s.
Yep an as a Franchitti fan he should've focused on winning a 5th IndyCar title and breaking the most IRL championships tie before Scott Dixon.
In the Cup Series, yeah he was a bust. But in Xfinity, he was actually respectable, especially since 2011.
He drove like a bust in his final year of the Xfinity series though.
@runrafarunthebestintheworld Not really. Of the 6 races he ran in 2017, Sure half of them were 31st or worse. But the other half, he was 1st, 2nd and 2nd.
Love the GT4 music in the background. Absolute nostalgia! 🥲💙
Is Hailie Deegan next?
How this guy never got at least an f1 test after he won his second irl championship I have no idea…
Probably because IRL was an oval racing league and he was unproven on road courses
Oval racing and road course racing are completely different. Look at SVG
Future video idea suggestion: Drivers that come so close to a championship one season but struggle big time the next year and don't come close to capturing form from the prior year (1991 Mark Martin, 1992 Bill Elliott, 2011 Denny Hamlin, 2012 Carl Edwards, 2014 Matt Kenseth)
Cup Series yes but arguably not so in the Xfinity Series.
Okay to be fair unlike the JJ Yeley, Reed Sorenson and Andy Houston videos
I do agree with you on Sam Horny Jr being a bust
Granted looking back on it the 77 clearly wasn't penske's priority probably because the 77 was originally Jasper Motorsports
Yep for sure.
He didn't do much better in the 22 car though when he took over for Allmendinger part way through 2012. That's when they were back to a two car even (2, 22)
Do a bust vid on Colin Braun. I'm pretty sure he's a bust
He’s a great endurance car driver though, which seems crazy…as those are long races. He actually won a Truck race.
@AEMoreira81 yes but he was bad in Nationwide for Roush
I don’t think he counts as a “bust”. Maybe as a Cup driver but he has 5 Xfinity Series wins and almost won a championship too. Think he barely beats the label.
He said it in the video that he is a bust in Cup not nationwide. He was pretty decent in Nationwide.
Zane Smith- The rookie season from hell- coming soon to BFM
Austin Dillon and Harrison Burton are right there too
NASCAR busts Patrick carpentier
Who?
There’s a Patrick carpentier
But no Patrick carpenter…. People who are known elsewhere who never raced clearly aren’t a Nascar bust 🤨
I Spelled it wrong
@@Denverbroncos87Everyone is a victim of autocorrect at some time.
I love the "another open wheel driver that couldn't make it in NASCAR." You know, because all NASCAR drivers that go to open wheel are successful. Jimmie Johnson was a beast in Indycar!!!
Hornish's birthplace of Archbold, Ohio is half an hour from where I live, and his current residence of Napoleon, Ohio is also half an hour away. His Mobil 1 paint schemes were great though. And im honestly amazed we got a Sam Hornish Jr bust video before Dario Franchitti
Sam’s move to NASCAR made sense at the time. That man accomplished everything in IndyCar one possibly could. Had he started in Busch full time, he would have stood a chance in Cup.
And he wasn't going to accomplish any more because the Champ Car drivers like Will Power would drive out the IRL only drivers as the years went by.
I remember the whole Open-Wheel drivers to NASCAR mumbo jumbo during the late prime to early twilight of my years in the Lenore House in Michigan. What a helluva time to be alive + one of them was my favorite driver after Kyle Petty retired that being Montoya and that was NOT fun!
At least Hornish was good in Busch Grand National/Nationwide/Xfinity and that’s what most people should be focusing on and even as an Austin Dillon fan, I’m not afraid to admit as a regular viewer with the fanboy cap off that he should’ve been the champion in 2013 if NASCAR didn’t waste laps under yellow and actually red flagged the damn race + I met him the week of the August MIS race in 2008 at Bruce Campbell Dodge by where I lived at the time and he was very cool! Good video Darian!
EDIT: I FORGOT about that 2015 Cup stint with the Pettys the 1st year I moved to Ridgeville in the Sandy Ridge House! Thanks for reminding me and bringing back so many memories!
Sam Hornish Jr. and Dan Wheldon! The IndyCar rivalry I got few glimpses on when the IRL was broadcasted in my country. RIP Dan! People like these two got me into oval racing.
Marty Robbins
Marty Robbins
@@handsomedevil4928 He drove for fun only. Marty never ran a full schedule.
@@evanwilliams6406 I know. I just comment his name on posts.
Can we talk about how Nascar screwed him out of an Xfinity title and gave it to Dillon?
One of the best drivers racing a Pennzoil-sponsored cars
He probably needed to be brought along more slowly. His Nationwide/Xfinity success kind of proves it.
I was really hoping that at least one of the Indy car guys from that 08-13 period would be a legit contender
6:53 “speed is beautiful”
How ironic
Holy shit the bots are out in force.
Funny he was born in my hometown and raised in the town south of me, his father owns a massive trucking business and his wife is the heiress to archbold waste (waste management company). The least I heard he was a substitute teacher in Northwest Ohio for funsies and learning the hornish brothers trucking business
Sam Hornish's career could have gone on a different trajectory if he had the opportunity to enter F1 instead of remaining in the IRL in the early to mid 2000's as both BAR Honda & Jordan were interested in signing him but Panther Racing & then Penske refused to release him from his contract. Heck for their first F1 season in 2005, Red Bull (who had been the Jaguar team since 2000) wanted to sign him as a way of really promoting their team in the US. However the deal was nixed once team principal Christian Horner found out that the IRL only raced on ovals & that Hornish had little experience on road courses & decided to sign David Coulthard instead.
Hornish would never go anywhere in F1. He had difficulty adapting to the IRL when they brought road course back onto the schedule, much less competing against 20+ road racing experts in F1.
NASCAR Busts: Michael Mrucz
Championship Seasons: Jimmie Johnson 2007
Bad Seasons: Dale Jarrett 2003
Random Drivers: Lyndon Amick
Gone Too Soon: John Nemechek ( Not JHN)
Part of the problem is that, like David Stremme, he ran for Penske when they were at the low point of the team's slump. (Luck didn't seem to be on his side either.) I think in almost any other full-time team he would have ran better, and his later career in Xfinity seems to back that theory.
At least Sam Hornish Jr has something Danica Patrick doesn't have and That's a Top 5 Finish (3 of Which) in the Cup Series
I still find it hilarious that despite his 2010 season being worse than 2009 he still scored more points in 2010 than he did in 2009
I always wondered where the disconnect is with these IndyCar drivers struggling when they make the jump over.
If I remember correctly, wasn't the last really successful one Tony Stewart?
Yeah, basically
Allmendinger isn't doing too bad though
I just bought his rookie diecast. 236/300 funny how this is the first video that comes out
11:29 i never knew my workplace sponsored the 9 car in 2015 for Sam Hornish Jr
It’s like when he called Steve Kinser a bust, yeah his NASCAR career wasn’t that great but I doubt anyone was challenging him 1v1 in a dirt sprint car race in his prime lol
@@Wisconsin222 some people are just better at one discipline and Kinser's one true place was Sprint cars. He returned there and never looked back!
At Fontana, Sam Hornish won the fastest race of any kind ever run on a closed course. The average speed was over 207 mph...for 400 miles. If I remember right, that was in 2003.
What is a NASCAR Bust? I don't know anything about this, but I wanna know why TH-cam is recommending me this. Can someone explain to me what a NASCAR bust is?!
For Indycar busts I think we need to do a video on Marty Roth, Tom Blomqvist or Zach Veach
Some drivers are great in one series and not another. Colin Braun is another.
Ok. Here’s a racing “What If”. What if Hornish stayed in IndyCar? Does he challenge Scott Dixon’s dominance? How many more titles does he win?
I would’ve loved to see an IndyCar era featuring Hornish, Dixon, & Montoya. That would’ve been some fun racing.
No. Like every other driver that started in the IRL, he started going backwards when more road and street courses were added. 2008 would likely be his last good year while the Champ Car drivers adapted to the IR08.
His career would also likely get worse when ISC dropped IRL/IndyCar from the majority of their oval tracks when their 10 year deal expired.
Not A Bust: Sam Hornish Jr. Xfinity Series.
Honestly, when I was a kid, he was my favorite nascar driver cuz NASCAR Inside Line, I thought there was a difference in how fast each o e would be. Then he had the most eye-catching paint out of the dodge cars. But I’d run Tony Stewart and Jamie McMurray, and Jimmie and Jeff. Cuz they all had my favorite looking cars.
he could be considered as a What If in Nascar overall cuz he had good races and bad races
6:50 “Speed is beautiful”
Was insane in open wheel, goes straight to Cup in the worst Penske car during their worst time, then kills it in XFINITY, and never gets a fair chance in Cup again
Ppl really don't know what a bust is and just throw that term around like candy
He was only "insane" in open wheel because each series had half the talent during the split.
Wasn’t a bust even in the cup series just because you don’t win doesn’t mean you’re a bust
Waiting for the "Nascar Busts: Hailie Deegan" since she lost the Xfinity ride.
It's it's one of those surf shark sponsorships this video is.
He is one of those guys. Sure Sam Hornish Jr in IndyCar is one of the greats like Franchitti, Patrick, and the like. But when it comes to touching on NASCAR, it's supposed opposite. But SHJR stands above the rest in NASCAR Xfinity. But when touching on the world of the NASCAR Cup series, it's one of those Cup Series busts just like Danica Patrick.
I met him he was a very nice guy
At that time i was wearing an Philadelphia Eagles jacket he actually and chip Kelly (speaking about busts )just got hired
He asked me how I felt about that and I told him I didn’t like it
SH jr generally finished lower than he qualified while in the Cup series. That ain't good.
Waiting for Hailie Deegan's one
Is gran turismo 5 menu music what im hearing?
If there is one driver that i would recommend you cover in Gone Too Soon. Why not the 1963 Daytona 500 winner Tiny Lund? I felt like he couldve achieved more than what he got before his untimely death at Talladega in 1975.
But if you don't see Tiny Lund as a driver that was gone too soon I feel like you should still cover him anyway because his story is rather interesting and one for the ages
I’ve always thought he had the best COT paint scheme
I'd like to see you do à video about Dario Franchiti's brief run in NASCAR.
He already did….
@@Denverbroncos87 when?
Sam hornish Is a great guy just saying he's done a lot for his hometown
I seen him race in a xfinity car back in 2012 at Chicagoland
Danica should've seen how Sam Hornish fumbled in NASCAR as a precaution so she didn't go to NASCAR. The premise of an Indy/CART pilot going stock car racing (post-Stewart) was all too familiar as they went to go bust. But she went there anyway and....... (At least Uncle Sam fared a bit better than Lady Danica)
The top IndyCar teams were tired of Danica playing diva and Andretti was not going to resign her. If she didn't go to NASCAR, she was going to a bottom half team.
She also should have stayed in Nationwide/Xfinity for longer than she did and run a limited cup schedule to get more experience, but money talks until it runs out.
Completely unrelated to this video which was great, but why r u not on NWP? It’s been a few weeks without u and I was just curious
Cup series can make you a star or get chew and spit out in an instant.
Yeah he did nothing really exciting in cup.
(Another random fact, Wikipedia says he finished 35th and was running but that's where Harvick finished. lol)
Not a bust: Sam Hornish Jr (Xfinity Series)
Sam’s not as much of a bust as he was a late bloomer
In the Cup Series driving Jeremy Mayfield's old Mobil 1 scheme on the #77 no less!
I still liked him tbh despite the results
Next Hailie Deegan please, I need that video before I die
Sam Hornish Jr. didn't do that bad he wasn't given the best cars in the cup series and if penske brought him on as a full time driver in the cup series I think he would have had alot more success
Sam was a great driver, don’t think it’s entirely fair to call him a bust.
We need one for Kevin LePagr
Ahh yes the 2000s open wheel driver wanting to be a stock car driver era …
No mention of 06 team in 2007, making homestead and Phoenix?: bringing out caution at homestead too
He won some races in the Busch series so I can't really label him a bust in NASCAR in the cup series yes but not as a whole
Bro’s just calling anyone a bust now 💀💀💀
You didn't mention the multiple wins at Iowa!
Sam lives about 35 minutes from me now but does no racing that I know of. He has a whole wall of fame at the local BDubs.
To be fair that 77 was never a good Penske car so he isn’t a bust for me. Roger Penske put all of his eggs in Kurt Busch’s basket.
How to be fair the 77 wasn't originally Penske
It was originally Jasper Motorsports but over time it became Penske
Didn't Penske kick Kurt Busch into a different team number and make him use his Champion's Provisional so Hornish could qualify for races?
Should have stayed in IndyCar. He would have gotten another Indy 500. Not sure why he never went
back.
No, he wouldn't. He would have disappeared into the background like every other IRL star after reunification and ISC dropping IRL/IndyCar after their 10 contact ended.
Sam coulda been a xfinity champion fs
Poor dumb mechanics 💀💀💀
Yea he didn't do so hot In the cup series but I always thought there was something fishy going on behind the scenes because he would show speed but not results
Nascar bust- Hailie Deegan
Only guys in modern era that came from open wheel to stock cars an had success off the the top of my head would be Tony Stewart, aj allmendinger, an robby Gordon say what you want about robby but he won 3 races in a couple years that's better then michael waltrip did in 20yrs
Indycar bust: Milka Duno
Someone did this a could months ago.
