- The small East African country of Uganda recently elected Yoweri Museveni as its president for the sixth time, continuing his run as head of state that began with his violent takeover of power in 1986. Despite his win there are allegations of widespread voter fraud and clear indications that underhand methods were used in order to give him the advantage over his main political rival Bobi Wine, who was placed under house arrest by the army on the day of the election. In this video I dive into the long and complicated political history of Uganda from its independence in 1962 and through the various infamous dictators like Idi Amin and Milton Obote to better understand the foundations of Ugandan democracy and how Yoweri Museveni was able to rise to power.

Such is modernity, and everywhere parties and factions are called after acronyms (e.g. GOP, LREM, CDU, FLN,...)
Kinda Africa in general. One 3-4 letter acronym fighting and/or committing genocide on another 3-4 letter acronym.

@@appleslover Keep in mind that it's a lot more complicated than this but: A lot of people in the Netherlands, in particular non-Dutch EU citizens received subsidies from the tax service that they weren't entitled to. Later, the tax service labeled these people as frauds and demanded the subsidies back. This got a lot of people in financial trouble. As the news broke out a inquiry was started and it turned out that several ministers and secretaries of state were aware of the problems but kept it quiet. This led the prime minister to resign the cabinet. Many nations colonized economically and ideologically by Soviet Union recover from communist party members oligarchy to this very day. Post communism is a broad term for patologies of communist system in countries that were communist. At least that's how we define it in Poland
As someone who lived in Uganda for 4 years, including their 2016 election, I really appreciate this video. I still remember the profound sadness my Ugandan friends experienced when Museveni "won" yet again.

Note that all the traditional kingdoms of Uganda (Except one) has been restored since 1993 by Yoweri and the kingdom of Rwenzururu was added aswell which hadn't existed before.

It's bizarre to me that these events would have been seen in real time by my grandfather. He was already 50 by the time Idi Amin kicked him out along with the rest of my family. I can't imagine what it must be like to own a business, have a family, and then be reset to nothing at such a late age.

The whole time I just kept imagining what it must have been like as an average joe trying to raise a family and provide for them while all of that madness was going on all around me. Unbelievable. The Ugandan Indians were not deported but expelled due to their economic power. The Apartheid government in South Africa used this as a scare tactic as it had the largest Indian population in Africa to get their support against the Bantus. Uganda has always been a problem because it is a country formed like so many others in Africa as a legacy of colonialism where incongruent groups were forced to become countries.
I dont see how the borders could have been drawn in a way that would not lead to this mess. If you had a few hundred dwarf states you would not have 'incongruent groups forced to become countries', but that would also lead to everlasting conflict: the communities want/need access to the same centers of commerce, to rivers, to the sea, to natural resources, to fertile land... To prevent them from fighting over it, it makes sense to put them in the same country where they share access to all of these things. However, there was a naive assumption that different people would be able to live in peace. I'd say the dominant causes of all the conflict are ethnic and (especially) religious intolerance, and an inability to form a strong military that can adequately and swiftly squash rebellions. I'm sure it's painful to admit this, but all the fighting in Africa and the Middle East do not bode well for diversity/multi-culturalism in the West.
Both you louvendran7273, and robertdegroot8302 spoke insightfully. I find that the problem lies inside the heart of man. "Lord of the flies", the book, draws a good picture of that. Mankind is born unto strife, just as sure as the sparks fly upward.
I've often thought what Africa would have looked like, had it been divided up along traditional tribal grounds.... For that to function, it would indeed take an amazing amount of cooperation. That seems to be an issue for mankind, no matter where you try that. Cooperation works best when people operate with the Golden Rule.

Thank you for not leaving out any detail regarding the brutal dictator and military overthrows that have left Uganda wondering weather we’ll ever have peaceful transition of power.
This isn't about a peaceful transition but the nature of Uganda. We were destined for violence with the way Britain set up this country. That's why Museveni is a godsend. He has managed to keep together a country which is always destined for civil war

This was great clarification. Museveni is possibly the greatest surviving remnant of the African liberator who arrogantly assumes that he knows what's best for his people despite the long-list of failures and missed opportunities of his government. The Ugandan mania against homosexuality (helped out by right-wing US evangelicals) is also a clear effort to use a popular prejudice to distract Ugandans from the continuation of his wasteful and cruel regime.
The eyes of the world on Bobi Wine makes it near-impossible for Museveni to simply murder him. And that makes videos like this, bringing the politics of nearly-forgotten countries to the world, really important.
Grow up. Museveni doesn't murder political opponents. Secondly, you have just watched a video which showed the fallacy of full blown democracy in Uganda yet you you still want Uganda to be fully democratic. That's cult ish thinking. If you look at the history of Uganda in its specific context, Museveni is a god send who pacified a country that was in never ending civil war through military brilliance. Bobi Wine is too too soft and would lead Uganda back to civil strife

And polls show that the vast majority of Africans across the continent support democracy and want more of it. So I'm little interested in the pretence that democracy is an unwanted institution pushed from outside.

The issue is that you are thinking in your paradigm(I'm assuming you're from a western country) You think democracy is the magic bullet for every society. Uganda is a unique country with its own unique history as you've just seen in this video. I fully believe that Bobi Wine would make a horrendous president and that's whybi voted against him. I don't want change just for the sake of change. I want a qualitative change that will keep the country intact and not just break it up. Bobi will lead to chaos. So that's why i choose Museveni. Your political landscape in your western country differs vastly from the Ugandan one.

Thank you for the crash course in Ugandan leadership! I would very much like to hear about Museveni's reign, to me as an American it is shocking to think that a military leader is still the "president"! It is clear there has not been a free or fair election, perhaps ever? I have become good friends with a young lady from Uganda and haven't been able to find much online. I was very concerned about the recent "elections". In your opinion was this purely a sham "election"? Please keep the videos coming Hilbert! (a timeline would have been awesome with dates on the screen as you told the oral history) I pray for you and your country to prosper, to be safe and to be free.
Well I voted for Museveni. Anyway, when the Brits colonised Uganda, they put together tribes that were either at war with each other or in extreme competition with each other. They left after independence and left a democracy. However, those schisms came to the fore and led to the never ending civil war. There was no Ugandan consciousness so u couldn't have a truly unified army let alone politics. However, there came out of the blue during these civil wars a leader called Museveni. He pacified the south. The previous soldiers from the north launched rebellions but Museveni won. He pacified the country. He didn't do it by elections but by military brilliance. But that took many years. Now u have a young population which largely has no memory of war. All they have seen growing up was misgovernance. They are demanding change. But they've largely forgotten how far Uganda has come from under Museveni. He literally pacified a country that was in never ending civil war and for that I'm eternally grateful. Can democracy keep the country together?? I highly doubt. A reckless democracy will take us back to civil war imho. By reckless I mean one that doesn't involve this current army. This is something the young generation doesn't grasp. My option would be a parliamentary type democracy, a middle ground type democracy but the military must've have the final say.
M7 as a dictator is non like you've heard or seen before...As a Ugandan who doesn't support him but respects the man's cat like skills to survive..this guy Isn't like any other uve seen before..very calculative, patient, focussed, always 'shape shifting'(Manoeuvrable) and damn sobber...his a real workaholic...My relatives are in politics and worked very close to him..they all agree the guy is damn informed on everything happening in all corners...he'll have a meeting till 1 a.m and you'll find him somewhere else attending to other meetings at 6... Dude doesn't tire. Unfortunately being a professional rebel made him good at security but poor on development.

My only issue I take with Europeans in Africa is them not understanding the political dynamics of tribes that where already established in Africa and trying to weaken them...
Obote was from the North and from a much weaker tribe compared to the south...
There's no way there would be peace having someone who's from a completely different tribe with different norms etc rule them..no way!
M7 is from the western part of Uganda...the west and central part are different tribes but are from a similar group of people (Bantu). they can work things out as many of their beliefs align hence conflicts can be resolved easily.
The central tribe was the biggest and strongest tribe in eastern Africa before the Brits came...why would they put and 'outsider' as a leader and think things would run smoothly....

I remember my dad and mum telling me about what it was like for them growing up during the Ugandan civil war and the genocide, it was terrible. Soldiers would break into homes, steal, kill and worse then leave just as suddenly as they'd arrive.

There is a lot more to this story, and it has to be said that museveni did bring a certain level of security and "rule of law" to uganda. So many people lost loved ones and property under amin and the conflicts that followed him, and the country, at least in the south, has been relatively stable under museveni. It would be interesting to explore his connections to rwanda, and Kagame in a further video.
Kagame grew up in uganda as a refugee he later joined M7s rebel group that captured power in 86 he later invaded rwanda with help of M7 and captured power too after the rwandese genocide

I was talking to a friend of mine not so long who is a Bantu and were talking about corruption from our own countries (me being from Brazil), and it was funny how she said that it’s supposed to be a democracy but the same guy has been ruling the country since 80s and that although he is under the label of president, everybody considers him a dictator.
