- A Cubs-Cardinals matchup is always electric, but the meeting between the rival teams on June 23, 1984, was truly special. It was a beautiful Saturday at Wrigley Field and the game was broadcast nationally as the Game of the Week. The Cubs rallied from behind led by Cubs second baseman Ryne Sandberg. Sandberg went 5-for-6 with two late-inning home runs off of Cardinals closer Bruce Sutter and seven RBI to propel the Cubs to a dramatic 11-inning 12-11 victory over the Cardinals. It became the cornerstone of Sandberg's MVP season and it let the baseball world know the Cubs were for real as they battled back to the postseason for the first time since 1945 that year. This was one of THE greatest baseball games of all time.
I respect a lot Chicago Cubs. Ryne Sandberg is one of the greatest 2nd baseman of all time. Greetings from Mexico City.
I remember watching the game as a 19 year old kid, life long Cubs fan and beaming with pride seeing this game unfold before my eyes
Ryne Sandberg was one of my biggest heroes growing up. I've lived in California all my life and bleed Dodger Blue, but no ball player had a bigger impact on me than Sandberg did. To me, he was and still is the definition of what a Ball Player should be. He was always my favorite, he was larger than life when I was a kid.
Can I tell a story related to this game? I was born in England, and got into Baseball in 1988. A TV station called Channel Four showed highlights of the NBC GOW at 2.30 am! I taped the games, and watched them over and over again to pick up the rules and understand the game. In the winter that year, another station TSW showed the GOW too. On a broadcast from Fulton County stadium the Braves hosted the Cubs. Anyhow Sandberg came to the plate, and yes Bruce Sutter came on in relief for Atlanta. Bob Costas and Tony Kubek were again commentating. Bob started to tell us the viewers and Tony Kubek of how Bill Murray missed the "Sandberg Game" and desperately wanted to see it. Murray visited Costas at his New York apartment and the tape was put on. Murray revelled in the game as a diehard Cub fan. But, as Costas was telling the story Sutter threw him the splitter and Ryne promptly hit the ball out to left field! It was perfect synchronicity of great commentating and timing. I am still 32 years later a Yankee fan, but I love baseball. I now live in Ireland, and often my insomnia is perfect for watching night games with the time difference! As a MLB fan I loved this documentary, and the stories behind "The Sandberg Game".
Very nice story. As a diehard Cubs fan that lived through the misery and heartbreak of the 70's and 80's this was a highlight special for us.

sutter was great Cub. He did a lot for the Chicgo Cubs in the late 1970s. He will always be loved by Cub fans .
Wish he stayed a Cub. I give him credit for being very cool in this interview and not being a jerk, or offended by Ryne hitting home runs off him.
As elementary school kids, every morning during spring training me and my little brother woke up 2 hours before the school bus would come so we could walk to HoHoKam and wait for Sandberg to get to the stadium. My heart would beat a million times a second when I saw his red Porsche turn in off the main road. Over those years, he gave me quite a few of his autograph and I still have them all (back then the players parked in the grass soccer field next to the stadium so we could walk with them to the gate). Those moments (walking next to him) and autographs he gave to me got me through my parents divorce. He will never know but thanks Ryno for helping me through those tough times!

I drove school bus in Mesa, AZ. At that time, Cubs spring practiced at Fitch Park a block over from HoHoKam where they played pre-season games. I loved going out after my morning run. The players were friendly and accessible. Billy Williams was the batting coach. I was amused how he would always grab a bat and work on his golf swing.
I wasn't a cubs fan...but I definitely was a Sandberg fan as a young kid. You had to respect Dawson, Grace and Sandberg. I actually got a warmup ball thrown to me by Ryan at a Braves game...I was hollering for him and cheering while he and Mark were tossing warmup balls and when they were done he threw it up to me in the stands. It was an awesome day and I'll never forget it!
Great Era. Great Game. Great Players. Class acts- all of them. Sandberg- a throwback to a different era- a great player with great skills with much humility. Today's players should mimic this guy.
I was only 1 when this game was played but Ryne Sandberg is still a huge reason I’m a Cubs fan to this day….the days of Ryno, Grace, Dunston, Dawson…Great teams in my early years!

Just learned of Sutter's passing. As he demonstrates, he was a tough competitor on the diamond, but gracious even in defeat when things didn't go his way. The Sandberg Game wouldn't be half as good if not for the fact that Sutter had a legendary status as an untouchable closer. Nothing but respect for this all time great closing pitcher

My dad was a lifelong Cubs fan, and I inherited that gene. He was disabled and mostly blind, but he never missed a Cubs game on WGN. He was able to catch this game, but died the next year. My first thought when the Cubs won the World Series was of him - "Wish you could have seen this, Dad."
Saturday's game of the week is iconic for me living in a rural area with only 3 T.V. channels to even watch. I have very fond memories of growing up & watching Saturday's game of the week.

The game was great, his career was great, the Cardinals were so good, but sharing a life time highlight with little boys who look up to you so much... You just can't beat that.

it's truly what life is all about. that cycle of unconditional love passed down and passed down. Even to me, just some hillbilly hick who grew up in a small town outside of Lexington, Kentucky and would watch WGN channel 5 games and loves and respects Ryne Sandberg so much because of the Sammy Sosa, Andre Dawson, Mark Grace, Shawon Dunston, Greg Maddux, Steve Buechele (etc) days. But to the youngsters, he's just good ol Pappy, wondering why a stadium full of people loved him.
Sharing it with his grandkids was the greatest thing I have seen in a long time! God bless the Cubs!

I was born in 1984 and baseball was my life.... in 88 Grace was a rookie.. This was my team. Still is..
Whoever produced this video deserves an award of some kind. How fortunate that this game took place in 1984, when the importance of saving recordings had begun to be recognized. (If this game had happened in 1974, the tapes would have been erased the next day.) All the little side stories are brought in at exactly the right moments - the Cardinals starter who had 2 career starts and 44 innings total. I had forgotten that Sutter started out as a Cub. Mixing the TV and radio calls so expertly. And then you have Sandberg answering his grandson's questions, like pointing to a random fan in the stands and asking "Why is he so happy?"
The only thing overlooked was that "God's umpire", Doug Harvey, worked the plate. Nobody mentioned that, which is probably how he would have wanted it.
That's a good point about erasing the tapes - really sucks for players from those generations who had ten-year careers but only a grainy VHS highlight or two to show for it, as far as being able to show your grandkids etc.

Solid stuff about Harvey, and you are spot on about the production and editing. Come on man, how do you not get a little chill by this: "But pappy, why do they call it the Sandberg game?" ... LOOK OUT, THERE IT IS, DEEP TO LEFT FIELD, THIS GAME IS TIED....... That is what baseball is all about. Sandberg telling it as we men, we Chicago men, have all lived it in our hearts decades ago. I well remember daydreaming in a Northside elementary school classroom, on the playground, laying in bed, wherever, it didn't matter, that I was at the plate in Wrigley, some 6.4" stud on the mound, bottom 9, bases juiced and we (THE CUBS) are down by 3..................
Do I need to tell you the rest, doubt it. I would do the rush of air from my throat to simulate crowd noise, and of course I'd do the announcer HEY HEY as my game winner bounced onto Waveland.
God I loved those days. Are they gone? Somehow they just don't seem quite the same. I don't think it's because I am older, since my dad was my age when Sandberg broke the Sutter code and dad sure loved it. I don't know man, just don't seem the same.

Sandberg is so underrated, overlooked even though he's a HOFer. So unlike today's players, he played great defense, he could run, and he could hit. And he was such a smooth, consistent hitter. Hardly ever struck out. Not too many other choices, in my mind, for best ever second baseman.

Back when baseball was still a great sport. Those Cubs/Cardinals games were always fun to watch. I loved Ryne Sandberg so much that I named my kid after him. Seriously. Nothing but respect for Bruce Sutter. That guy is a warrior and a legend. Those were two great baseball teams. They played the game the way it was meant to be played. Not like today where everyone things they need to hit a home run. It was solid all-around baseball. I miss those days.
I watched that game live, as a 12-year-old. Wasn't a Cubs fan, but still remember Sandberg's great performance.

Same here. This is the first and only season I either watched or listened to every Cubs game for the entire season, and was so heartbroken when they lost to the Padres after taking a 2 game lead at home.

Yes he is a fine person and a role model for the young fans . I remember spring training in Mesa one year . Ryne had a whole slew of kids gathered around him . He was talking and joking with them . He stood for photos and signed what ever they wanted . Now that was a batch of happy kids .
When any player hits for the cycle, and was still outdone by a player on the opposite team. Pretty much says it all.
I say this entirely without sarcasm: I'd love to hear Sandberg talk about why he peaked at 29-32 when so many players are in significant decline by then--how did he stay healthy, playing nearly every game? How did he put up 40% of his career value in just those 4 seasons? The questions that are never asked of the greats, really.

I was there that day. Our university had a bunch of Cubs and Cardinals fans, so that was our annual day to sit it the right center field bleachers with friends and talk trash with each other. Needless to say, it was a terrific day for that. I'll never forget it.
Seems like the Cubs were on every afternoon when I was a kid. It was the only team that was broadcast nationally and that made us all Cub fans. At age 8-12 is drove me to be the best Little Leaguer I could be and forever a baseball fan! RIP Harry Caray.
I remember that game as if it were yesterday. I was 29 and lived in a tiny apartment on Halsted. I watched every second on TV. That summer was just magical, even more than 2016 because it was so unexpected.

This game was the first time I went to Wrigley and the first game my dad had ever seen live! We drove from Grand Rapids, Michigan to see it. You can imagine the memories!

He was so freaking good, I grew up in Louisiana and we had WGN so we could watch all the Cubs games.
I had the pleasure of meeting Ryan at a Cubs fantasy baseball camp in Arizona about 17 years ago, terrific fellow and great baseball player.
Been a Cubs fan since I was 5 in 1984 and Ryne was my first and always has been my favorite player of all time. One of the most deserving Hall of Famers there has ever been in my opinion. One of the first 40/40 guys. Kids today do what that is.
The coolest part of this video was Sandburg with his grandkids.

wasn't on WGN-TV...1984 was the first year NBC held exclusive rights for TV broadcasts of the Game of the Week - which is why Harry Caray was on the radio with Milo Hamilton that day. This was actually the first Cubs home game to NOT be televised on WGN since I believe 1947.

This documentary gave me chills and made me feel 37 years younger!! I loved Ryne Sandberg so much back then. I bought one of his baseball cards for my newborn son. We still have it too!! So happy Marquee Network hired him for this 2021 season.

@@derklempner I just loved how humble Dave Owen is about it. He doesn't care about getting credit for winning the game, he was just happy that they put him in.
@@derklempner I've got to admit that that line made me think of the early Bulls championship teams, who had only two endgames depending on how far they were behind. It was always either "throw it in to Jordan" or "throw it out to Hodges." Baseball is categorically different in that it can force someone like Dave Owen (career line .194/1/16...he was valuable only for his defense and he'd be the first to admit that. He's a really nice guy when dealing with Cubs fans, for what that's worth) into the position of being the hero of the day because there are no longer any substitutions which can be made.
@@justinestes6400 Growing up in Minnesota, I got to know Gene Larkin a little bit when I was in high school and at the peak of my baseball autograph collecting phase. He was always a little bit confused about why he got so much attention, because all he did was pinch-hit for Jarvis Brown, who was definitely not the person you wanted at bat with the game on the line.

Love how into it the crowd is. No stupid cel phones, no selfies, no overblown walkup music, no hotdogging and pimping the homers, no overpriced club seats, no beer snakes, no idiots running on the field. Just 2 intense fan bases watching two teams go at it like real rivals do on a Sat afternoon in the greatest ballpark in the world.

I don't think people realize how hard it was to make the post season back then. It was only the LCS, no wild card, no divisional, and it was only 5 games to get to the world series. Magical year for the Cubs, and definitely fond memories of being a kid watching the Cubs during summer break

I'll never forget the game with the Pirates when the Cubs won the NL East pennant. There were about 300 people there from Chicago and Harry Caray announced the name of every damn one of them. That said, I absolutely loved it when WGN and TBS showed all of the games every season. The Cubs and the Braves were truly America's Teams.

I played second base in Gering Organization Baseball in 1996 through 1998.
All I watched growing up was Cubs ball since they had their own tv channel. Dawson, Dunston, Grace, Sandberg. This is great.
I was an 8 year old Cardinal fan watching this game. It was such a fantastic game, and one of the few regular season games I remember from the 80's. Sandberg was incredible that day. The Cardinals played really well, but could just not get him out to save their lives.
I was about 7 years old living in St.Louis watching this game and became a Cubs fan and a Sandberg fan. I ended up playing 2nd base when all my friends wanted to be like Ozzie Smith. I still have my Sandberg jersey that I wore to many Cardinals/Cubs games. Ryno would never sign autographs away from Wrigley Field, but I got a LOT of other Cubs signatures.
I would put this game behind game 7 of 2016 world series. What a game!

Helluva game! Sutter and Smith, closers working multiple innings. Common back them but unbelievable in today's game. It was an amazing feeling for us Cub fans that day, beating those hated Cardinals.

My parents watched him when he was at AAA OKC in '81, and were at a game the night I was born. So, naturally, when he was traded to the Cubs, we followed him there. He was my baseball idol growing up, and I have been a Cubs fan ever since then.

I was 16 and watched this game with my dad. Still the best baseball game I have ever seen and a great memory with my father.
I was 12 years old and watching this game live from my hometown in Northern Ontario, Canada and it's still one of my favourite baseball moments. What Bob Costas said is right, today you can see any game at any time but back then the game of the week was a big deal. I'm glad it happened on that Ssturday afternoon!
That really wasn't true in 1984. Cable was pretty common in cities; I'm not sure if satellite dishes were around that early. But if you had cable, you could watch almost every Cubs (WGN) and/or Braves (WTBS) game all season long. I think most major markets had local broadcasts as well.
I'm one of the guys who became a Cub fan that day.......Summer of '84. I was a Minnesota kid just getting into sports (and the Twins weren't too good), and it was the first time the family had cable (WGN)......out of that season, I became a Cubs fan and a Twins fan moving forward....always a dream of mine that someday they play in the World Series

4 Years before I was born and Im a Red Sox fan. Never heard of Sandberg but hes a solid legend in my book now.
He is from my home town of Spokane and I remember love watching him play growing up. Spokane know has Gonzaga Basketball but growing up we had this man.☝☝
Crazy range by Ozzie on that one play. How many other shortstops could have even gotten to that and he was out by a step and a half. Good God!
What I find amazing and how incredibly talented MLB players are is the comment Rhino makes... “aiming to hit underneath the ball”??!!! What ?? You are facing Bruce Suter.. and you can visualize hitting underneath the ball?.. amazing remember watching this game and since then Rhino will always be in my top favorite players
Sandberg is my fav player EVER!!! I would use his batting stance when i played baseball, made the allstar team 9 yrs in a row!😀

That was an incredible game! This video brought back so many memories-so many familiar names of Cubs players I watched as a kid.
i'm sitting here looking at Cubs rosters from the early 90s. names i would hear Harry Caray say so many times. the nostalgia is enough to nearly make me weep.
