Oh its super refreshing to see something that actually looks like traditional 2D animation from the west without odd moments of flash clearly being used while still having very fluid and animated motions and expressions.

The mayo gave me flashbacks of that one Easter where teen nick said they had a lost episode of Rockos Modern Life. But they showed a picture of that damn mayo 😡
This special honestly blew my expectations out of the water. Mad props to the writers for handling a trans character in such a respectable way while still staying true to the humor of the show.
Nathaniel Foga except an actual Netflix movie that's 90 minutes come on who wouldn't want to watch a 90 minute superhero origin story about Jenny (I kinda want to see an origin movie but it's fine if it's not)
its very very faithful to the original, i consumed A LOT of rocko growing up and this felt like a longer episode. Also rocko says trans rights! (and yea all of rocko is on VRV and it also has closed captions!)
As a Rocko fan who grew up in south America with the Mexican dub of the show I have to give them props for bringing almost every one from the original cast for the dub of the special, sure Rocko and Ed Bighead had to be replaced because Rocko's va is dead and Ed's is retired, but they got decent sound a likes, but it was nice almost every one else had their original voice, even minor characters like Duppet and Dr. Hutch.
A small correction, but later I discovered Ed was voiced by his original VA, Gabriel Chavez, but he does sound a bit different at times which is understandable since he is 73 years old, regardless the rest of my last comment remains the same.
Now if only Netflix could buy back the IP rights of a certain show after it got written off and then produced more of it. One about Giant Robots. I know they won't and are not in a financial position at the moment to do so, but let me dream.
Oh you mean about the fat guy a skinny douche and a hot alien female fighting a galactic war in a post apocalyptic future in a car that turns into a robot in New Jersey? That show.
We can’t live in the past we can be grateful for it but if we don’t accept what’s now we can miss out on what’s most important For all the haters who can’t accept modern shows or channel changes
My mom and I watched it this morning. We both enjoyed it immensely. I am a fan who obviously knows more of the lore but she is a causal fan who watched it with us when we were growing up in the 90s in passing and we both got a lot out of it. Great special, and wonderful review as always.
I'd just seen this special on Netflix and LOVED It and I'd been a HUGE Fan of Rocko's Modern Life and I have The Complete Series to Rocko's Modern Life on DVD and it still is the Funniest Nickelodeon Cartoon
I liked the "cancelled show" premise really well, but i think it would had been a touch more relatable if they kept the fatheads running, but became unfunnily violent and mean-spirited, like spongebob and family guy.
**SPOILERS** for those who haven't watched, and you really should by the way, but again **SPOILERS** This extended episode (which is a great term to describe this) dealt with current issues in a hilarious, but also sometimes awkward, uncomfortable manner, because that's often how modern day issues feel, awkward, but you still have to come to terms and open lines of dialogue. The fact that Rachel still came through for Mr. Bighead based on the love she still had for her parents, when you stop and appreciate it that was in and of itself, more moving than some of the stuff Disney Pixar has put out. It was so completely self-referential, it went to the point that it even became anti-itself when critiquing the cartoon revival craze as not looking forward and being stuck in the past, and this could easily extend into videogame remasters which game devs are more than happy to make since it's just a matter of polishing, no storyline writing needed, and hey look at the money we just printed. It's not just "oh game devs/TV writers don't have any good ideas anymore" no, there's a DEMAND for this kind of stuff and they are supplying it because they respond to the market. Static Cling is telling you it shouldn't exist, and that wallowing in our nostalgia is great for a while, feels nice indeed, but let's also remember you have a life to experience nowadays too. Well done to Joe Murray and his team. They made a revival to end all revivals in more ways than one. Oh and that joke with Mrs. Bighead licking the Fatheads popsicle.... holy shit....
Kinda losing the point a bit at the end there, but I see where you are going. Also, some commenters have mentioned that according to the creator, a proper continuation may come if there is enough interest and he gets the people involved in this to work on it.
@@frickthefuckoff I've heard that as well. Given this outing I don't see that it could go badly, writing was as solid as it was back in the 90s, and the animation quality was untouched also. So if that's how Joe and his crew would like to keep the lights on for the next year or two we'll be here to watch certainly. My only concern stems from how "Tuca and Bertie" has been treated by Netflix. I think maybe RML should try to find a home somewhere else, again if Joe Murray does want to go through with it. They're different shows but woven with very similar humor. Also I admit I didn't go too much into the "accepting change" moral on my earlier comment, like I did think the 'whinds of change' bit for example was a tad more heavy handed than it needed to be, it felt like a 90s kids cartoon the most at that bit, but I also like that it was loyal to its formula. I was just far more taken by the angle at which it attacked reluctance to change rather than how it gave the lesson in accepting it. Humor was razor sharp, pulled no punches on the viewer, the ticker at the bottom of the screen during the newscast scenes was pure savagery for instance, to say nothing of the Conglom-O employee that broke down in tears when he realized he didn't know how his children were.
Static Truths they might move to another network but in all likelihood it’s probably gone forever! But hey that’s what happens when Netflix doesn’t put animations on the trending page!
Static Truths probably not because if I’m not mistaken to many of the same artists and writers work on Bojack and that would be a conflict of interest selling it to Hulu because they are competing agains each other! Plus it might be one of those things where the licensing is with Netflix just how Viacom has licensing for old nick shows and sell it to Netflix because that’s not a conflict of interest! But hey it could happen because Viacom did sell Doug to Disney and that was a conflict of interest!
As a trans woman who watched Rocko before realizing who I was, the Rachel plotline makes me super happy. So glad they treated the subject with respect.
No offense just my opinion to someone who is in it.but u a man wanting to be a woman..who u really are as a person and how u Express yourself has nothing to do with gender..who u really are is who u is but the black and white of the matter is u lying to yourself and u living that lie. Isn't that more dangerous u living a lie and u promote it to the youth. How can u trust a person who believe god makes mistakes or someone who lie to themselves and believe the lie. Plz respond...
Is everyone complaining abt Rachel forgetting Heffer’s brother Peter? Y’know the guy who dressed like a girl and participated in traditionally feminine activities always saying his family didn’t understand him? Sure, he was a very minor character but as Pan pointed out, the whole “parents disapproving of their child” thing was a recurring thing with the show so it isn’t unprecedented. Maybe it would’ve been better if they did a different character (bc they kinda used this one before) but it was still good and fitting
Rachel Bighead is the best thing about this about this special. It would’ve been so easy to make cheap jokes and laugh at minorities, but handled her very tactfully
This vid was a hoot! Been so hyped for this special, can't wait to watch this and Zim, hopefully this means we can get more from these shows, if not, I'm still satisfied! ^^
People like to think anything with more representation than previously normal is some sort of SJW ploy to take over the world or something now. Maybe those people should learn a little from the special and listen to *the winds of change*
I don't see why not. Static Cling prove that Joe Murray and the crew are still capable making amazing Rocko's Modern Life material. After making this great special, imagine the potential of a great revival series? That means Rocko's Modern Life has the opportunity to have a revival series that's an example of a reboot series done right. If Joe has an interest making a new Rocko's Modern Life series, then that'll be really amazing. And it can stream on Netflix.
If you are worried that this new Rocko's Modern Life wont include all the crazy antics the original had, I'll tell you right now, Static Cling is every bit as batshit insane and clever as the original, if not even more so!
Ralph becoming Rachel was handed well. It wasn’t too preachy, heavy handed, and they didn’t make Mr. Bighead a bigot. They made it feel more naturally part of the plot
I thought it was brilliant. The commentary on modern Hollywoods handling of beloved franchises was perfect. It took shots at every and anything. I don't think it aired on Nick because all of that stuff would have been missed by kids along with the tons of in jokes directed at fans of the original series. It was as faithful as I hoped it would be while being as clever as ever instead of dumbed down like modern Spongebob. I would love to see more.
I was thinking the same thing (more or less) it pretty much played like a regular episode of Rocko's Modern Life which really all it needs. Nothing too big or grand, just humble.
Joe Murray was asked about whether or not the special was a finale or ending to the series or if there was room for more episodes and ideas and things to say about the characters. And he said it was possible, that there is always more to say and that if given the opportunity and if the people who worked on it with him would be open to it as well, it would be something he wouldnt mind discussing. For example there were things cut from the special that he said could work as episodes in themselves. Anyway, just thought I'd share that. I think people should really look into what else he had to say regarding the show in general. He's always seemed like a really nice dude and I appreciate his heart going into his work and message he was trying to get across.
Murray is a very down to earth Fellow. And San Josean. He graduated in 1985 from De Anza College outside of Apple's HQs in Silicon Valley. Murray said that MTV Networks and Games Animations,Inc gave him lots of freedom and creative control during Rocko's First 2 Seasons of '93 and '94, they did cross the line a few times which led to TWO episodes being BANNED from Nickelodeon. When Viacom brought out Nickelodeon in 1995, it was in the middle of production of Season 3, Viacom however wasn't so friendly and forced Murray to tone down the show significantly, they even displayed homophobia when they asked him to fire Voice Actress Linda Wallem(Dr. Hutchinson,Virginia Wofe,Alicia The Maillady) because she had just come out of the closet. Murray and the Crew REFUSED and defended Wallem, Viacom however forced them to use an Alias for Wallem in her Billing name in the Cast "Linda Waller" as a way to spite them. Finally in August 1996, when Viacom agreed to renew the show for one more season with about 5 episodes ready to air, the Clashes between Murray, Joe Murray Productions, and Viacom International reached a Breaking point as Murray announced to them that they were NOT going to proceed with producing a 5th Season and told Viacom that "Murray just can't do it anymore".
I think the trans thing is fitting for Ralph/Rachael, considering that frogs are capable of changing their sex. It works as a deep message and a biology gag.
This special was a just a really nice continuation/reboot of the original. Really exited for the Invader Zim one, along with a video from you about it. And I speculate that dubbing the special in different languages took part in the it taking a while to release. Nice review overall.
Yeah it's fine. I'm happy with it. Yes the Hey Arnold jungle movie is great finale for Hey Arnold. I would be fine with not seeing anymore Arnold stuff. But for Rocko. I would like to see more. I can't imagine it being on Netflix since they ain't doing so hot these days.
I love that she doesn't show nearly as much fear towards the situations that trans women tend to face, since we can assume she's been living her truth for years now. She's learned to be confident in herself and to accept her body as it is now, and even after having to deal with her father's rejection, she's probably rehearsed the situation in her head and lived it in the wake of his reaction to her hobbies long enough to know he's just a stubborn toad who needs time to adjust.
"Bu-bu-but muh favez showz from teh 90z pu$hing SJW politicz!!!" That's literally the comments section for the Netflix trailer. Glad this is the most popular reaction video to Static Clean; it actually is truthful to what the show was in the first place.
Yeah. A lot of anti-SJWs always blame on the minority for being "woke". They may have a point that leftists did everything wrong, but they completely obsessed with the SJWs so badly that they ended up losing their mojo. Don't get me wrong! The "woke" is a red flag to entertainment industry but blaming on the minorities -- who are used as a scapegoat and a prisoner to SJWs -- are just THAT bad. Anyways, Static Cling is a great revival that stayed faithful to the original series. Period.
honestly some of my favorite jokes include the two aliens, the CG fatheads, and the 10 hours of mops video spunky watches also it’s apparantly confirmed that the chameleon brothers were deported off-screen in the last news scene in the film seriously hope they give us a DVD release of the film
That special was PERFECTION! I know you say that in the title, but you didn't quite dig into it - probably to save more spoilers. I just can feel the care in every frame, in every scene, in every joke. Against the odds, this exists! And I'm so grateful!! I hope modern cartoons learns a thing or two from this.
I just want my show baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I really enjoy this special when I saw it. This definitely captured the same spirit like the rest of the series (and successfully made some of the satire on our new modern world like the original series' run).
Usually representation for existing characters feel like an afterthought. Like "Oh lets make this character this to represent". This felt like it was almost planned. The character was always unhappy, went soul searching, and used a modern day action for it. As someone who isnt trans I didnt feel as if the character was drastically different or changed, and this felt like natural progression. Id say shows with more natural representation can help those not in it feel more normal to it and not see different people as special parade floats and just as normal people
We don't need this agenda drilled into kid's heads. It's bad enough it's already forced onto them and encouraged in real life. Blatant child abuse in action.
... I cried watching this. Both from the nostalgia and for Rachel. She was my favorite character and I just wanted her to be happy. That smile of her being accepted by the trio made me bawl.

its very very faithful to the original, i consumed A LOT of rocko growing up and this felt like a longer episode.

I'd just seen this special on Netflix and LOVED It and I'd been a HUGE Fan of Rocko's Modern Life and I have The Complete Series to Rocko's Modern Life on DVD and it still is the Funniest Nickelodeon Cartoon
The show is called The Fatheads, not The Bigheads.
I liked the "cancelled show" premise really well, but i think it would had been a touch more relatable if they kept the fatheads running, but became unfunnily violent and mean-spirited, like spongebob and family guy.
Glad people found this modern interpretation of Rocko great.

**SPOILERS** for those who haven't watched, and you really should by the way, but again **SPOILERS**
This extended episode (which is a great term to describe this) dealt with current issues in a hilarious, but also sometimes awkward, uncomfortable manner, because that's often how modern day issues feel, awkward, but you still have to come to terms and open lines of dialogue.
I loved this special! I'd love Nick shows on Netflix. Glad to see Pan back!
When are you guys on the podcast going to talk about all the new Netflix cartoons and the canceling of tuca and birdy

It's weird to watch the episode and understand the message and have people whine about Ralph being Rachel.
Credit to the special, the Rachel thing didn't feel that forced compared to other shows or movies
It really does prove the point the creators are trying to cross. Ralphs thing was not being accepted by his parents. Not accepting it is quite ironic.
@@humanman7368 And those same people claim to be fans of the show. 😂

Maybe they are gauging the interest...hopefully
Dude I would pay them to make that revival, they should make a kickstarter or something like that right?
I'm willing to bet that this is a backdoor pilot.
It felt out of place and forced. Nobody wants to hear about a dude getting his dick mutilated and expecting people to not think he's an insane freak.
@@bluechicky2662 lol shut up
I agree. It's handled and written really well.
This special is a lesson on modernizing an already modern life.
If you ask me, it's pretty cool that Rachael is what she is because you know, Modern life. And because Frogs can change their sex
Now we know why Nickelodeon ditched the movie and kept silent for 2 years after its sneak peak.
Goodvillain 101 pulled a clickbait
Nope. That's not why.
"Bu-bu-but muh favez showz from teh 90z pu$hing SJW politicz!!!" That's literally the comments section for the Netflix trailer. Glad this is the most popular reaction video to Static Clean; it actually is truthful to what the show was in the first place.
@kristian rikardsen bro talkin about politics in 2019? CRINGE!

I really enjoy this special when I saw it. This definitely captured the same spirit like the rest of the series (and successfully made some of the satire on our new modern world like the original series' run).
I adored Rachel Bighead! She’s the proper trans representation we need in kids television.
