Another fun fact: The only reason why Betsy Palmer (Mrs. Pamela Voorhees) agreed to be in this movie is because she needed the money for a new car, when she originally read the script she thought it was a piece of shit. But she had grown to accept it and the franchise over the years and even been to different horror cons.
And two reputable critics, Siskel & Ebert, gave out the information of what city she lived in so people could write to her about how awful she was for being in the movie.

I find it interesting when people today watch movies made 30 - 40 years and use toady's thinking or how the world is to think about what happens in a movie from way back then. Times were different. This movie came out in 1980, 41 years ago, but was filmed in 1979. Hitchhiking was VERY common then. So getting into a strangers car wasn't as much of an issue then as it is now. Sure bad things happen back then but not like it does now and not as often.
Yeah, in the 70s especially hitchhiking was common. Even then there were a lot of warnings that hitchhiking is dangerous, don't do it, but people still did. So it was as much of an issue then, if not more so, people just ignored the issue more then. Now, that hitchhiking is less common, serial killers more commonly break in.
Fun fact this movie was only made for $550,000 , it's first week it grows 5.8 million dollars in worldwide it grows almost 60 million dollars it was the second grossing film in 1980 after airplane and that's why they made 200 more
This was supposed to be a stand alone movie. It wasn't intended to have sequels but it made so much money as a low budget film that they introduced Jason as a killer to keep it going. That's the reason for the discrepancy between Jason being a kid and then a full grown adult. Cause a kid killer wouldn't be as scary. So it's really up for interpretation. Great review girls! ❤
that's all very interesting but the way i see it the boy in the lake scene could just have been a trauma dream/ nightmare that she had and it ironically comes true in another way...and that is Friday the 13th 2.
@24:59 "Yeah, that's not triumph music anymore..." 🤣🤣🤣 Great video. As several have pointed out, the special effects were done by Tom Savini, who is a legend in the industry. Mr. Savini was a combat photographer in Viet Nam, and has essentially based many of his effects over the past several decades on his experiences over there. He is known to say his goal is to have the same visceral feeling from his effects that he had from what he witnessed in the war.
My mom took me too. It was a bit much to handle at a young age, but I watched every sequel through Jason lives in the theaters as well. Skipped the new blood, but was there for Jason takes Manhattan and Jason goes to hell.
Another interesting fact. The snake handler was very upset and heartbroken when they actually killed his pet snake. So, yes the snake was actually killed.
Say what you want but in 1980 when audiences saw this it was shocking and it still is an experience to watch this film without any prior knowledge going in if your under 19....it just hits different as a teen...
I love that when the killer is a shadowy unknown figure she's chasing people through the woods, hacking them up with axes and knives, but when her face is finally revealed she just ends up slap fighting.
Psychotics often switch like this. But the element of surprise is on their side. Once they're seen for who they are, the fight is way different than the fast kill.
Also the reason why she could kill all the others was because either they know her, or she act like a sweet elderly woman which get them to drop their guard down, I mean you don't expect grandma to shiv you or bury an axe in your face, and who to say she was doing all the killing herself, she never really said that Jason died, he could've drown, but was brought back, she could've used witchcraft, she could've made a deal with the devil, but with all those Kills I think Jason help, we was made to think it was all her doing
I remember seeing it in a double feature with The Empire Strikes Back back in June, 1980 when it was maybe a week or 2 old in theatrical release as a 10 year old with my aunt and uncle and 2 cousins who were 3 years my senior. It was my first time seeing an R rated film
How'd she kill them all without getting blood on herself? Well, when she kills Annie and then when she kills Jack you can see that she's wearing the plaid shirt without the sweater covering it.
Oh yeah without a doubt, they are the best trio. The humour is on another level with the woman on the right. Ever since the exorcist jokes I knew they were going to be my favorite trio.

Some people forgot that Mrs Voorhees was the original killer in the Friday the 13th franchise even drew Barrymore's character Casey Baker in scream (1996) which was a tricked question for her because Jason can't drive a jeep
Actually the Scream killer got it wrong There are two FT13 movies where Jason wasn't the killer. The first one and the one where the ambulance driver was posing as Jason.
@@novatlas1945 actually you wrong Jason never drives his mom was the original killer who was killing all throughout the first movie Jason didn't show up until part 2 wearing a burlap sack slashing people

The fifth one there was an ambulance driver disguised as Jason killing people because his son was murdered. Part 5: A New Beginning. So there are two movies where Jason wasn't the killer. He came back in part 6:Jason Lives.
Emma is right. The element of surprise is a very strong thing. If no one has their guard up then it is easier to kill them. Annie was he only one that saw it coming but she was also injured with her leg so there was little fight with her. Ned was killed by surprise in the cabin. Jack was also. Marcie went into instant shock and just stood there to get the axe to the face. Brenda was surprised on the archery range. Bill was surprised in the generator shed. Mr. Christie was surprised by someone he knew. Alice, being he last one and discovering the others, was NOT surprised as to who is trying to kill her and probably not being a fighter by nature can only put up so much of a fight. And remember it is a proven fact that people who are crazy psychopaths tend to have more than normal human strength, so placing the victims in certain places wouldn't be that hard for her.
I don't care how much shock I'm in if I see somebody coming where to ask I'm not going to stand there and let them hit me in the face with it . None of the horror movies are real life based because we know nobody's going to stand there unless somebody hurt them or attack them with an ax we're also going to beat the crap out of somebody until we feel that they're dead or knocked out unlike in these movies where they hit them once and then they walk away

When Jason almost drowned he noticed his mom didn't try to help so once he managed to grab a hold of a long and ride it to the other side of the lake where he decided he was going to go stay with his dad without telling his mother. Unbeknownst to Jason while he was gone his mother thought he drowned and went all crazy and got her head lopped off. Jason's father often told him his mother was crazy and that's why he had to leave her, that and she just couldnt make eggs worth a darn.
I prefer to believe he was pulled from the lake and abducted.........and kept in the town drunk's (crazy Ralph) shack in the woods for decades until he was was able to escape as an adult.......I also like to believe Ralph killed Alice, not Jason, in part II. Jason's 1st kill.......Ralph! Not bad, huh!?!?! Kind of explains a huge plot hole.
@@travzimmerman1340 Awesome! I thought it would have been cool if Ralph would had been Jason's father. There seemed to be more behind Ralphs character than they showed..
How did Jason survive the drowning? Cold hard cash. It was a little 500k movie that made $80 million (265 million in 2021 dollars). Btw, that answer applies to every horror movie villian who "dies"... how did they come back? Box office.
Ari Lehman, who played Jason, frequently does autograph signings/meet n greets and fronts his own metal band called First Jason. I hear he's a really cool, down to earth guy.
classic. loved it. think the budget was $500k and they made like $60 million or something close to that. I saw it at 13 and the mom scared the crap out of me.
Here's the thing to know about the Friday The 13th movies as you continue watching them from this point on: They're not about the acting, they're not about the stories, they're not about making logical sense or continuity. All you need to be concerned about is how Jason comes back to life at the beginning of each one after part two, how he is killed at the end of each movie, and most important of all is how all of his victims are killed. That's what made these movies so popular was the inventive ways in which Jason kills. These movies are just made to gross you out and make you cheer for the bad guy. Slasher killers are like Marvel superheroes, they have special powers that make them invincible and all you want to do is watch them kick ass. So don't take them too seriously, and instead just sit back and enjoy the ride. Fun fact: When they made part four all the actors were so excited to be in the movie that they rushed up to the special effects supervisor Tom Savini and begged him to tell them how they were gonna be killed in the movie. That's how famous this series became for its inventive kills.

Back in the 1970-up to early 80s showing graphic violent kills of females (only aftermaths) on screen would make a rated R movie into NR or X rated film, unless the female is the killer, that's why all the graphic deaths were male. Yeah needles to say it took me till I was an adult to actually watch the movies and its now one of my favorite horror franchises. Actually got to meet Kane Hodder who plays Jason in 7-10.

In the 2nd film, they pull a retcon and establish that Jason actually didn't drown (and for whatever reason, never told his mom he was alive). He witnessed her decapitation at the hands of Alice, which is what turned him from a reclusive hillbilly mountain man into a serial killer.
There are twelve movies total when including the remake. After the first eight movies, New Line Cinema, the studio that owned "A Nightmare on Elm Street', bought the rights to the franchise. I'm not sure if it was their decision or a rights issue, but they didn't have "Friday the 13th" in the titles of their films. That's why theirs are called "Jason Goes to Hell", "Jason X", and "Freddy vs Jason". The remake was made by a different studio. I believe it was Platinum Dunes.

This one may not be the best, but it's important for what it ignited. Crazy Ralph, Pamela Voorhees, the Kills by the legendary Tom Savini and Alice are really what this movie is worth watching for.
In 1957, he supposedly died but he actually survived and started surviving in the woods. Of course the first year was rough, but when the camp was abandoned after his mother killed the 2 camp counselors and did the arson fires, Jason just moved into camp. And the 21 years surviving in the abandoned camp he learned how to survive off the land and learned survival tactics and only was afraid of people. In 1979, when Steve was starting the camp back up, Jason had to move back into the woods because Steve was renovating the camp. Pamela offered to work again with The Christy family in the camp as a cook. Pamela obviously has some type of mental illness which makes her hear her son's voice in her head and even saying out the voices in her head. Pamela at this time still doesn't know that Jason is alive and well at the age of 33. Pamela starts her killing spree and is killed by the last sole survivor, Alice Hardy. Alice says she saw Jason, but this obviously could be from the trauma she received during the whole incident. But Jason saw what Alice did, he saw what she did to his mother, the only person that truly loved him. So, except for being scared of strangers that enter the camp, he now gets angry at them and blames them for the death of his mother. And he has the same type of mental illness like his mother, Pamela. So he hears her voice in his head as well. 2 months after the murder spree, he tracks down Alice to seek revenge for his mother and kills Alice at her apartment. And he has the camp to himself again, but he still had the shack he built in the woods during the 5 years by himself after he killed Alice. I truly believe he didn't just come back to life, because it wouldn't make sense because of the timeline. He survived the lake and made his way to a shore after almost dying of drowning and he was forced to survive by himself. And that's why in the Friday the 13th part 2, he's 33 in the beginning and after he kills Alice, and 5 years pass, he is 38 when he starts killing the people that are close and in the wilderness that he made his home and he also hates them because he blames those type of people for the death of his mother. Including his mental illness of hearing Pamela's voice in his head telling him to murder the people.

Just so my thoughts here don't get pulled out of context if you choose to delete your post, I have copied/pasted it here for the future. "I truly believe he didn't just come back to life, because it wouldn't make sense because of the timeline." How does it make any sense that Jason survived and lived in the woods directly after almost drowning without anyone's knowledge, especially his own mother? How long was he under water before he came back up? I used to think this back when I was a teen in the 90s, but I came across the other idea that he did drown and the evil carried within his mother from what she was doing entered his corpse bringing him back. Which could make Jason's appearance at the end not a dream. If I may, where did you come up with your idea? Just curious.

How a boy survives drowning, builds a shack in the woods and survives every winter is such a better question than how a supernatural force could bring back a drowned child after his mother has been murdered, bringing him back as a full grown man. The fact that Jason has been living in the woods since before the movie's opening makes more sense to you? That is your right to have such an opinion. To me, a little boy who almost drowns at a summer camp but doesn't try making his way back home seems to make much less sense than my thoughts. You seem to project too many inferences that aren't really there. You state the remake as we're regarding the first and second movies. I'm not discussing the remake because that is its own entity. If you were to take mine, or, rather, the person who directed "Never Hike Alone" creator's thoughts, you wouldn't need to make sense because evil bringing a drowned child back to life once his mother has been murdered doesn't need to make sense. Makes a lot more sense than a child building his own home in the woods at such an age as he was just after almost drowning, and choosing not to find his mother, whom you claim he does see murdered, then goes on a killing spree afterwards...? The end of the original movie shows Jason coming back to life, and I believe Jason's body looked like a teen, thus giving five years, a boy that age could grow into an adult looking man. Why not? It's much more plausible than the story Ginny makes in part 2. Your opinion. We needn't get into an argument regarding this. It's fiction. Not real, you see. Any interpretation is okay. "I know it starts get spiritual and shit when he gets resurrected in the Jason Lives movie, but it wont make sense for him to come back to life and in the span of 2 months and 5 years, grow into a full built male." Why? Because you said so? If Jason can be resurrected in the first place, my thoughts seem to align pretty well with the story. And for a child with a handicap like Jason's, I think he'd need help to survive.

So Fact time! This is Kevin Bacons first movie. The next is they had to submit this movie to the rating board over 3 times because it was to graphic at the time they were going to give it an X rating. They had to cut so much of the kills that's why we don't see all the kills and the kills in full because it was to gory.
Even if you weren’t fond of this movie, it was done with a very limited budget, around $550,000. It wasn’t expected to be a hit. Betsy Palmer agreed to play the mother for $10,000 only because she needed a new car. She read the script and said “What a piece of shit!” But she went ahead with it because she thought nobody would ever see it, and she’d go completely unnoticed. Much of her career was spent Broadway and she was a classically trained actress. Decades later, she ended up embracing the movie and attending conventions for fans. I met her before she passed away. She was the sweetest and classiest lady ever.
I will say the mom as the killer twist and the ending with a kid grabbing her and obviously the subversion of the first girl we follow being the main girl for a bit only to kill her off is all interesting...the fact the driver was creepy the 2nd driver we never see or hear from that kills is a interesting idea mr christie was creepy ralph was creepy the guys were weird or off-putting and dumb and the fact there felt like 2 killers cause there were works to confuse us...theres been like 5 different killers in these friday films...

It domestically made $70 million on a $1 million budget, Mr. Cortez. Not a bad day at the office👍
that's all very interesting but the way i see it the boy in the lake scene could just have been a trauma dream/ nightmare that she had and it ironically comes true in another way...and that is Friday the 13th 2.
Saw this in the theater on release, my mom wanted to see it. I had a great mom.
How old were you
My mom took me too.
More then just upset, he flew off the handle and had to be restrained by three crew members.

You ladies are doing a great job! I hope your channel just keeps growing! It deserves to! 👏
Aww thank you so much that means a lot it really does! I'm so glad you are enjoying the videos ❤️❤️❤️
I love that when the killer is a shadowy unknown figure she's chasing people through the woods, hacking them up with axes and knives, but when her face is finally revealed she just ends up slap fighting.
I know!!!! Damn she could reach around a bed and hold Kevin Bacon's head down and shove a spear through the bed but can't take out the main girl 🤣🤣🤣
And dodging large spools of string.
I remember seeing this at The theater with my wife slasher movies were huge back then always a fun packed theater
Good idea of her.

Actually the Scream killer got it wrong
There are two FT13 movies where Jason wasn't the killer. The first one and the one where the ambulance driver was posing as Jason.
@@novatlas1945 actually you wrong Jason never drives his mom was the original killer who was killing all throughout the first movie Jason didn't show up until part 2 wearing a burlap sack slashing people
@@kevaunmitchell1316 I have all of the movies. The first one it was his mother killing people.

"Is he like a lake zombie?!"

Part 2 is way better bc Jason found his mom that night. She was taken care of him all along. Now he wants revenge.
Not really, part 2 erases Jason’s drowning and he was only made this iconic slasher today because the studio wanted a Michael Myers knock off

This movie convinced me to never go to a camp. Not because of the killer. Because of snakes.
They referenced this franchise in the scream movies. One of the characters said Mrs. Voorhees was a terrific killer in the foreshadow of Mrs. Loomis.
Please watch part 2. This was such a great reaction, it was so funny lol
Don't worry about how Jason came back. You will only get more confused as the series goes on lol

Back in the 1970-up to early 80s showing graphic violent kills of females (only aftermaths) on screen would make a rated R movie into NR or X rated film, unless the female is the killer, that's why all the graphic deaths were male. In the 2nd film, they pull a retcon and establish that Jason actually didn't drown (and for whatever reason, never told his mom he was alive). He witnessed her decapitation at the hands of Alice, which is what turned him from a reclusive hillbilly mountain man into a serial killer.
It was the best budget they had back then, they were only able to afford the green truck for the movie!!!

A theory regarding Jason's return to life is when his mother is murdered, it wills him back.
By the way: I am the 666th like!

"I truly believe he didn't just come back to life, because it wouldn't make sense because of the timeline."
How does it make any sense that Jason survived and lived in the woods directly after almost drowning without anyone's knowledge, especially his own mother?

"I know it starts get spiritual and shit when he gets resurrected in the Jason Lives movie, but it wont make sense for him to come back to life and in the span of 2 months and 5 years, grow into a full built male."
Why? Because you said so? If Jason can be resurrected in the first place, my thoughts seem to align pretty well with the story. And for a child with a handicap like Jason's, I think he'd need help to survive.

Don't worry Emma, I terrified of snakes too. We can start our own "We Don't Like Snakes Club". 😜
After Halloween, I highly suggest The Private Eyes with Tim Conway and Don Knotts from 1980. It's a comedy and lite horror, very lite. Great movie. It's just a silly and fun movie.
I so can't wait to the next review.

Yes we definitely need to start a club hahah
@@emmalou432 We can have secret passwords, and secret handshakes. 😜
You ladies are always fun!!! I have the biggest crush on Elizabeth! I use to rent these constantly back in the late 80's when these were coming out! Fun times!
Y'all need to watch the 1981 horror classics My Bloody Valentine and The Prowler 👍
I think there was something supposed to be implied between Alice and Steve
Whats really going on at camp crystal lake? 4, 5....6 "camp" councilors. Locked in a life and death struggle against......1 snake. I suspect the closest they have ever come to being in the woods. Is walking into a room with 2 or more house plants.
My personal theory is Jasons mother was never playing with a full deck. Since the film is just a role reversal of psycho. IInstead of killing his crazy mother. Jason took the first opportunity to runaway.
There were at one or two big duffel bags hiding Ned on the top bunk.
He's saying they're all doomed for being there but he's there tio. What's stopping killer from killing him. They driving on roads too lol
Yo luvvvly ladies saw Halloween kills yesterday and Michael is fcking BADASS. so my boy jason got 2 level up his SHITTT. CIAO 👊🏼
I love this movie even though it obviously tried to rip off Halloween but its the gift that keeps on giving 😏
Friday the 13th are fun and campy...If you go into them with that mindset its a good time. The later sequels get pretty bad though lol
there is freddy vs jason
