Yes it does, it has a brake. When you go on the turns, it increases speed so that would be a good time to use it.

Imagine if that cable snapped right as you were almost to the peak, and you instantly started rolling backwards at full speed, except now you arent secured to the track so at the first hint of a curve you derail and fly off the mountain and catch a sharp tree branch thru the torso.
