For $5, sure, this would be a fun kit to make a few bars or 'homemade' soap, especially for stocking stuffers.

The kits are nice looking but there's a general rule with M&P soaps that you get what you pay for. Ultimately, those soaps need to not dry my skin out like normal art craft store brands would for me to gift that kit to anyone.

Just a little note from my days in retail: A lot of packaging is bigger than it needs to be in order to help stop people from shoplifting! If it's too big to conceal easily, there's hope that it won't get stolen.

Manufacturers don’t care about shoplifting. As far as they’re concerned, that’s the retailer’s problem. This set is for a GIFT. They are trying to make it look like a quality item. The smaller the package, the less likely it is that people will pick it up. Most shoppers need to feel like they’re getting more bang for their buck. This packaging is all illusion to those shoppers. From a manufacturer’s standpoint, it’s always only about the display. Period.

i think with all these kits being a lot of packaging and a huge box is to remember, theyre trying to trick people into thinking theyre getting alot of items. for a lot of consumers, even subconiously, big box = more stuff.

    • @GSutton
      @GSutton 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

That, plus they want to stand out on the shelves, and it helps keep brick & mortar customers from ripping open the packaging to "see what it looks like," then putting it back on the shelf to buy an unopened one.

I wanted to point out that there was a mixup in the soaps when testing! You made the single color bar out of the basic white soap but called in the shea butter soap later! :0 So that is why the single color bar didn't lather as well as you expected because it was just the basic white soap. It may also explain some of the melting issues maybe? I'm not familiar with melting shea butter that much.

I’d wanted to try cold process soap making for a couple years, and finally actually started in 2020! I haven’t made much, but I made a lovely gentle baby soap for a few friends with new babies, and just mailed off some moderately festive soap gifts today (I am sticking to natural colorants and essential oils, but I still watch the bright happy gorgeous mica designs on TH-cam!)
It’s really fun, and there is something about combining oils and water and sodium hydroxide and coming out with a useful bar of soap at the other end which is everything I needed in this year where nothing seems to be in control! I can control that chemical magic, and I love it.

Ever wonder why some companies keep using oversized cardboard and plastic packaging? It’s because other companies need to sell cardboard and plastic. All industry is interconnected by the need to sell their products. For example; If all shampoo bottles stopped being made of plastic, how much money would plastic manufacturers lose? ‘Saving’ the planet will never be as important as making money for them.

Been in retail for decades and, not excusing it, but excess packaging is for a few reasons. 1. Fools you into thinking you are getting more. 2. Ready made gift. 3. Bigger package= harder to hide/ steal ( this is for very small things especially) .
I bought a similar type of kit geared towards adults, cute looking, colour blocks, little boxes to put the finished soap in ( not the best for glycerine soaps but hey...) and a great book...which had recipes for loads of soap ideas with ingredients that totally didn’t come in the kit. BUT such small amounts of soap that you get will harden SO quickly that an inexperienced person may think they are doing something wrong. For me, this one, in particular because of the useless fragrance, is not worth $5. That’s $7 CDN lol. Maybe if I wanted to teach someone the basics without “wasting” my good ingredients? Nah, even then I’d rather use the good stuff because it’s gotta smell good!

I've never actually tried any sort of soap kit and it's really surprising to learn that giving actual measurements/amounts in the instructions isn't standard, I would think that would be a basic thing to put in the instructions.

They had some great scents for the soaps! I loved it so much I’d save the molds from the kits and buy more soap base, scents and color! They still make the kits are are available online! I even got to where I was making 2 and 3 tone soaps and half logs that I’d slice into smaller soaps as per the directions! I gave much of my soap away as presents! You can always fill the mould with water (to the level you want) then measure the volume.

Ive used this exact kit. And many of this company's other ones. The soap kits are by far the best in their brand (in my own experience).

I made these soaps. I mixed them together and i didn't use their coloring and i added some fragrance to mine. They where kinda on the cheap side but i was impressed with it for maybe a kids project that aren't going to be using professional soaps.

I literally got this kit about a month ago. On the clearance rack at Walmart. I had it in the microwave for 45 seconds, it overflowed over my bowl and burnt dark brown. Apparently that was far too long, and to their credit, they said 20-30 second intervals. It produced a cloud plume of death that reeked like a poisonous carmel scented vapor that you know you shouldn’t huff. 8/10 would recommend. Slightly less for the discoloration of the microwave and toxic cloud that the evil queen from Snow White herself would deem a bit excessive.

I'm a graphic designer and I work in the fashion/jewelry industry mainly working in package design. I've been in this field for 5 years and I still don't understand excess packaging... at the company I work at, we really try to use as little packaging as possible because 1. save the environment.. and 2. its just overall cheaper that way... its so strange how companies will use all this extra packaging just to try to market their product as more "high quality"... not only is it a huge waste of money that the company is losing.. but also with their packaging being so large, it would be able to fit fewer on a shelf.. which is another loss for them!

Katie, love your energy and videos! Melt and pours have been my favorite this year. Thanks for reviewing the kit- I’d say this one is worth the cost. It’d be fun to learn how to make different textures (via soap molds or other).

Lydia (4): You make more soaps and we will make them. I love you and your daughter. We make soaps. And we used to not. *nyuuuum-pssht*
Mama: I'd skip this kit and take my $10 to Brambleberry. For $10, I could get 1 lb M&P, a color block or two, and a trial size fragrance oil. That doesn't cover shipping and I'd need to use a silicone mold from home, but those soaps are dreamy and leave Lydia thrilled.

In the end Katie said that the peach soap was made with the Shea soap. But in the beginning she used the regular white soap for that bar. So the plain white soap doesn’t lather that well. Just for anyone wanting to use this kit.

I do melt and pour craft with shea butter soap, and it does have a tendency to get weird and lumpy and sticky much faster than clear M&P soap. I've also found that it gets worse the more times you re-melt it. So it's kind of a pain to work with, but it is nice!

Yes! I love when you test kits. Honestly, you could try any kind of kit and I would love it. LOL/ You make sure you touch on everything, especially the things that matter, and you also talk about the price and you know what the price would compare like for an average person (if it's expensive for not). But I'm just saying, I love these videos, and all of your videos!!! Good Job Ms. Carson!
Have a great rest of your day! :)

I bought and used this kit and it was fun to make! I only watch this channel I don’t make soap but for a complete beginner who just likes crafts, I really liked this kit. I got a kit from the same brand but it had a different fragrance, mold, and color. My mold also held about a whole soap cube.I still haven’t finished this video so I don’t know her review yet, but I just wanted to leave a review for anyone who is wanting to make this kit.

So this month I made my first 3 batches of soap, and am planning the fourth for tomorrow! Followed your tutorial, though I did go a little off-script since I had different fragrances to work with. I got the celestial collection you talked about, as well as some clay additives (rose clay and sea clay) and both worked splendidly in two of my batches. The third batch I used was activated charcol, but that was more for appearances. All three of my batches worked out so well, and I'm looking forward to making the fourth! Thank you for giving me the confidence to make something so useful and amazing!
