Good video on chemistry, woulda just used some iron remover for car paint. Works great, I used Adams brand. Or yeah "blue" them with a torch and dropping em in oil.

Heat them up with a torch and drop them into common motor oil. Instant blackening.

If worried go to wire brush on grinder spray paint
Would electrolysis work instead of the acid bath?
electrolysis would remove any oxidation, but wouldn't leave the phosphate coating
