The inflation in Britain was very high. In 1950 you must pay 12 German Marks to 1 Pound. Today you pay 1 € to 1 Pound. But I love tue british coins and banknotes. Greetings from Germany!

Actually, if I remember well, the first green £1 (and brown 10s), introduced in 1928 and current until 1940 were those signed by K. O. Peppiatt. Beale's follows the WW2 blue pound issues (1940-49) and was in charge from 1949 to 1956. Even if devalued against the dollar prior and after ww2 (to $2.80 per pound), the purchasing power of that 1950 £1 was equal to about £50 in today's money. Still in the late 60s, my English teacher as a child got 2/6 each week as pocket money and saved most of it to buy a commando suit and equipment for his action figure, that cost him 11/-.

Always a pleasure to watch your videos! By the way, in the 1950s I received 10 shillings (50p) pocket money to last me for 10 weeks - I wonder what that would buy nowadays?

Hi John, I almost snuck a ten shilling note into this video, but I thought I'd save it for a future one. 50p for 10 weeks eh! Them were the days :-) Thanks for the comments :-)

If Thatcher got rid of the £1 note for the £1 coin back in 1983, it should have made it as big as a United States $1 Eisenhower coin that was minted here in the States from 1971 to 1979. But then again, Britain should have five coins(1p, 5p, 10p, 25p[to replace the 20p coin], £1) and five banknotes(£5, £10, £20, £50, £100). 💷💷💷💷💷
