  • My name is Jim. I live in a small town in Illinois. I am sharing my story of how I retired in July 2024 at 55 years old. I worked shift work in an industrial plant for nearly 26 years. I offer no financial advice but want to use my channel to glorify The Lord and give hope and encouragement. Several TH-cam channels helped me prepare for retirement and I am hoping I can help you. I am just sharing my experiences, thoughts, and observations. Maybe you are closer to retirement than you think.
Oh, and I am also an outdoor cook so there will be some food and cooking videos too!

Hi, Jim. I'm 70, but retired at 56. Your tracking with my experience when I initially retired. Then, I was also extremely conservative on the fixed/cash side, and kept a fairly large/multi-year cash reserve. It took a few years, but after seeing that I didn't need as much cash in reserve, I eventually got to the point of better leveraging my assets to generate growth over time. Absolutely nothing wrong with what your doing.
IMO, you'll eventually get to the point where your investment strategy generates a good balance, for your needs, between growth and income. IMO, nest egg "growth" is particularly important for an early retiree. Since you and your wife may have another 35-40-45 years of living ahead, a portion of your nest egg will need to be in the asset accumulation phase for future inflation-adjusted withdrawals. Interest bearing assets, traditionally, only (at-best) keep pace with inflation. Investments in equities, over time, have a better chance of increasing in value at a rate in excess of inflation.
In my personal instance, understanding that my wife and I had to use our nest egg early on, prior to receiving Social Security, as of end of of 9/2024, our nest egg has a nominal increase of 82.5% since I first retired. However, after factoring in inflation over this time, the inflation adjusted increase is 28.3%, which means that I'm doing a good job with our investments to counteract inflation's negative impact.
It's inevitable. Things will cost more in the future than in the present. Particularly for early retirees, IMO it's essential that we understand this and factor it into our nest egg investment strategy.
Good luck as you continue on your journey... As I often say, we work(ed) hard for our money, now it's time our money works hard for us.

Hi Jim, Ihope you and your family are doing well and that retirement is going good for you. I am also 55 - from the UK - and also just retired at the end of August.
I also worked on shift for just over 20 years in an operations role in a nearby Power Station, my original background is as a maintenance technician. So we do share some common grounds.
The reason im writing is because it is a big step to retire at our age and your videos have given me some comfort or reassurance that I made the right decision in retiring at this age and that im not the only one to do it. Keep up the good work with the videos.

Hi Jim, you getting your retirement legs yet? Took me four or five months to get into a groove. I built a shed like yours last month. I love that cement pad! Looks like a slight downward slant. That's slick. Good job and keep them coming! Buzz
