  • Quick video of laying the stone down the driveway until we got to the culvert pipe for the stream. Then we switched to surge stone to fill in around the pipe and then we will top coat that with 2" stone.

    Very good truck driver. Having built many roads and driveways in my time, I always wanted the roadway to be higher than the surrounding area or at least have well formed ditches on either side of the road. Otherwise the water will run to the road and that expensive gravel will just disappear into the dirt and mud. This drive is lower than the sides, there are no ditches.

    • @ImprezaRS2002
      @ImprezaRS2002  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, he was a pleasure to work with. Ya a weeks after we removed the piles of dirt that were pushed off and used it to fill in behind the house. We also tampered the edges and added in ditches to the side to keep the water moving. Most of the gravel/ stone is a top sand stone so it hasn't really moved.

    This isn't laying down rock, nor driving. This is artwork. And by doing it in reverse, he's not compacting the dirt with the trucks tires, Wich would ruin grade. Whatever you pay him it's not enough.

    Why did somebody gravel a ditch? I didnt see where a road was cut by a blade in the minimal. Theres a dozen looks like a six way blade too, then theres a ditch feet under the shoulders of what is supposed to be a road. Theres no drainage system at the egde of the gravel to collect any and all of rainwater and melt off. It's the blind leading the blind here. Why have a hump in your road when theres a dozen there? Two inch gravel is put on top of a road bed (you have no road bed) is this road being turned into a public road? As in a sub-divsion?

    Question! Why do you guys dump the gravel in reverse?? Is it a specific reason?

    • @marcoquiroz34
      @marcoquiroz34 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      jose,
      I would think the reason being is to compact the stones with the weight of the truck.

    • @ImprezaRS2002
      @ImprezaRS2002  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The ideals behind dumping the gravel in reverse are.. That the truck stays on the bed of gravel, giving the truck more traction and is less likely to get stuck. If it does get stuck the truck can empty the load without being in the way and hopefully drive out. If it is really stuck its facing towards the road easier for a tow truck to hook onto the front of the truck and get it out.

    • @Carpaintry_of_God
      @Carpaintry_of_God 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can think of one good reason that looks like fresh dirt. If you were to go forward over the dirt its tires with that such a heavy load might sink in causing deep impressions in the dirt. With him going backwards over the stone; his distribution of the truck weight is better off. I'm no expert this is just me from my experience of life. And I can see it as a possible reason that's all.

    • @darin001

    How many yards per load?

    • @ImprezaRS2002
      @ImprezaRS2002  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They were bringing between 22-24 tons each time they came. Lets say it was 22 ton on the truck that would be 44,000lbs . Weight per cubic yard is approximately 2800 lbs for 2" stone. So it would be 44,000. / 2800. roughly 15.71 yards on the truck and that one yard will cover about 150 square feet at 2" deep. I could be wrong on the numbers or the math but I think that's right.

      They do it that way as they feel there is less of a chance of the truck getting stuck as it is on top of the stone.

      Usually first loads on dirt are backspread

      Agreed, backspreading doesn't compact the dirt as bad, less chance of throwing off grade. Just my 20 cents from 30yrs.

    Why would you put down 2 inch stone as a base? Should of started with a pit run, or something with an aggregate base. That will disappear into the dirt without a trace.

      It's sitting a top some clay but mostly sand stone like you see inside the foundation. Been there and hasn't moved yet. Looks almost the same as the day we put it down. There has been a hand full of logging trucks and 5 more 22-24 ton trucks with rock to finish the driveway and to bring in rock for inside the foundation and 3 cement trucks with 10 yards in them and just a few days ago 3 trucks loaded with the block to make the foundation.

      ImprezaRS2002 I live in Wisconsin, the northern part of the state. 4 years ago I bought 2 wooded parcels of land, cleared an area on both and put in driveways. One I did myself, it was solid enough to have them tailgate it, I put down 3 inch minus washed rock. Looked wonderfully and was easy to rake it out to finish it off. Cost 47 dollars per yard delivered, im in the middle of nowhere.
      Second driveway was way to rough and needed a tractor so I hired it out. They used a pit run and topped it off with 2 inches of road gravel. Cost was 12.50 per yard. And 200 for the labor.
      Both were roughly the same size, and had roughly the same thickness of gravel. Both were compacted by me. But the driveway that has 3 inch minus on it, is now a mudhole so rutted up I can no longer use it with my car. The driveway with pit run is still very solid especially considering how bad it was before the gravel went down. But we have a lot of clay, and in a different area, so I understand how it varies.

      Freedom Fighterz I also live in way northern Wisconsin by Hurley. Our soil is different. On this kind of clay stone works very well as a binder. On our clay there's no bottom to it and you need an aggregate that will compact.

      Only thing to use period. Than go over top with 1 inch base. If ur really determined water it down than roll it will be hard as concrete.
