I first visited Paris when I was 33. I am now 80 and have been to Paris for the last seven years. Always have loved French culture and everything it represents. Your presentations are so spot on, humorous and delightful. Thank you.

I don't understand people who have "Paris syndrome"! How is this possible?
I have been to Paris many times and the only depression I feel is the days before I need to return home. I agree with Enrique Sanchez!

The MAIN thing that depresses me after Paris, is NOT being able to STAY there longer! ♥♥♥♥

Hi Theo, I have just returned from Paris and am missing it so much. The people, the language I do not know very well but enjoyed trying, the walking, just taking time to enjoy the spaces. Although I returned to the US with Covid, and experienced horrible flight delays I am already thinking of how to come back for another visit. My depressed syndrome is more because I had to leave and am not there. Now I understand why my mom loves it so much. My second visit and her 5th. There I am able to eat so well without repercussions like I have in US. So wonderful. Thanks for sharing.

I love Paris *because* it's a real living city. It's a beautiful thing. Before I visited Paris, I actually didn't expect to like it very much. When I actually visited, I was relieved to see the living soul of the city.
Also, Paris at night is truly the most beautiful place in the world. There's nothing like the lights of Paris at night (especially near the Seine).

One of the most important friends of my life (no longer living) said, “Some men fall in love with a woman. I fell in love with a city and I think about it every day.” We shared that love of Paris which has only grown as I’ve gotten older.

Nothing about going anywhere in France, including Paris is depressing but quite the opposite. But then again, I absolutely love everything about the French culture, people and language, and when I was younger, I tried everything I could in order to obtain permanent residency.

its a proven experiment that if you live in a major city , you get stressed out because its a business hub , its not a life place

I totally understand in terms of living in a city full of tourists. I used to live & work in Washington DC. You also give good advice that applies to life in general - you get back what you put out.
I hope you have a wonderful day Theo!

My last time in Paris - shortly before Christmas 2022 - I DID actually get sick a few days after arriving. Literally. Got COVID, probably from someone on the RER B from CDG.
But if anything, it actually made it feel more like home to me. And for some reason, for the past year, I've felt homesick for Paris, even though I’ve never actually lived there (visited about 5 times in my life).
I live and grew up in LA, so I know what it is like to live someplace with a lot of tourists with unreasonable expectations. Even Hollywood isn’t “Hollywood” but is really just a mostly run-down part of town with a few landmarks and a lot of fake crap and overpriced souvenir shops and terrible, touristy restaurants.
Tourists tend to think of LA as some dreamland, with celebrities just walking down every street, but really, there are some 10 million people here with normal jobs, just trying to eek out a living in one of the most expensive places in the world to live.
But no matter how “local” a tourist tries to be, there are some things that are just going to be very different. A tourist is probably going to eat nearly every meal out, whether that's at a restaurant, or picking something up from someplace. In real life, most people (even in Paris) cook at home all but a couple of meals a week. And in real life, most people have JOBS they spend most of their day at, and whether that's going to an office (or store) or working from home, they have responsibilities and can’t spend the entire day just wandering around. If they’re going someplace, they're GOING someplace, and the time taken to do that means time NOT available to do the things we love doing.
Also, as far as “you'll be back,” I've been very lucky in being able to visit multiple times in my life (partly because my wife is German and we go there every few years to visit family, so Paris isn’t too far).
But for most Americans, with so few vacation days, and with the flight being so far, so long, and so absurdly expensive, visiting Paris is probably a once-in-a-lifetime thing. So yeah, they want to cram as much into the few days they have there as possible, even if they're not REALLY getting the Parisian experience.
By the way, glad you seem to be feeling better. I know you were sick a few days ago.

The Paris Syndrome is called like that simply because it was called like that by a Japanese psychiatrist working in Paris. It happens everywhere in big touristic places around the world and to everyone even the French. It happens to almost nobody every year, to people who are already unstable and not fit to travel.

Oh thanks for the information ! It reminds me of the "Syndrome de Stendhal" when you get dizzy after visiting a big museum

Traveling to a foreign country for the first time can be extremely stressful, especially for anyone who doesn't know
know the language. Stressors can be: jet lag, major time changes, lack of sleep, adjusting to new currency, military time, Celsius vs Fahrenheit, and unfamiliar foods...unexpected seasonal allergies...culture shock...feeling like you have no control over your environment...resulting in depression. I went on the best trip ever when I visited France in 2007. (I love Paris and your channel.) However, 15 years earlier, when I went to Europe for the first time, and stayed in beautiful Switzerland, it seemed like everything was a challenge from trying to understand Swiss German to tripping over a 2" high threshold and falling flat in the middle of the night at a friend's home.(I would happily go back, now that the unfamiliar is familiar.) Vive la France et la Suisse!

    • @frenchguytheo

That's true ! And when you don't stay that long, it's even more difficult to adapt to the country and feel at home !

I miss the food!! I kept saying to myself what the hell kind of food are we eating in the USA. The problem now is that a lot of the great French restaurants are closed or closing. So sad.
