An Inca Indian and native of Perú, pianist-composer HWAEN CH'UQI holds bachelor's and baster's in piano performance from Eastman, where he studied under Natalya Antonova. He is one of the few pianists to have been invited three times as a fellow at Tanglewood, where he studied with Gilbert Kalish and Leon Fleisher. A semi-finalist at the 2nd Sviatoslav Richter International Piano Competition (Moscow), he was awarded the Special Prize. In 2012 he was a finalist at the 17th International Piano Duo Composition Competition (Tokyo). He is a member of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Chamber Music Society and is a co-founder of a number of ensembles. In 2009, the American Liszt Society commissioned him and five other composer-pianists to produce a second book of the celebrated Hexameron Variations, the original having emerged from a collaboration by Liszt, Chopin, Czerny, Thalberg, and other 1830s pianist-composers. His piano duos and duets are required repertoire for the 2023 International Piano Duo and Duet Competition (Ohio State University). A prolific composer, Hwaen Ch'uqi has received a great many commissions and has completed a massive piano sonata, several chamber sonatas, a song cycle, solo and four-hands piano suites, and a children’s musical.
