Anoka- sounds of the Asian underground! My first, along with many other people I'm sure. Just happened to come across it and liked the way it looked, and the info. I was glad I did. And it led to a whole series of musicians and disks. Wonderful tabla player. I've seen Zakir Hussain many times; even visited his class a couple of times in Berkeley. Talvin is very enjoyable and intriguing as well.
I love that he's bringing a western twist to eastern music, freakin' A man. Talvin is one of the people who inspired me to learn Tabla, him and Beats Antique. They shifted my passion for electronic music into something more analogue.
110% agree with you. Talvin Singh inspired me to learn and play fusion tabla since 13yo, I'm 28yo now and still play tabla fusion everyday. All my videos are on insta @naweedshams.
amazing, very humble true player......i only got 14 yrs o new delhi gharana mostly kaida tabla under my belt and i'm always stunned to hear he only practiced an hour or so a day.....it takes me 42 mins just to get warmed up! His playing is so genorous and teaches as it goes......Kehbhaaaat
I understand why the Indian community doesn't dig his playing. There are hundreds if not thousands of extremely skilled tablas players on a high level of performance which never get out of India or not even their home state. And there is Talvin Singh. He is incredibly creative and has experimented with traditional music in combination with a lot of other stuff like even electronics. Maybe he isn't where the traditional tabla player is with his skills but he is opening new paths which are closed to the traditionalists who hang on to the old ways. And we know what happens when you hold on to the old ways. They become an object admired in a museum.

He's able to reproduce the sounds of drum & bass (which EDM producers usually play through samplers and drum machines) with his bare hands on a drum. That takes an immense amount of skill.

The Tablas which he chooses are too out of tune it's weird...and all those moments when he is looking his computer to select tracks or sounds are strange and empty. I don't think that's very interesting now...I liked what he was doing before now it gets a bit empty.

I strongly agree with Sudamani Muth, Talvin was most recently awarded the OBE by the Queen of England for his contribution to Music. He is also knows as the Father of the Asian Underground Music.

Not necessarily rules but knowledge. It does not sound good at all for north indian tabla players standart.
