From the flight deck: flying one of the last Fokker 50s in Europe

  • With only about 200 ever built worldwide and far fewer still in service, finding a Fokker 50 to fly can be quite a challenge. But the Fokker 50 is the heart and soul of small Swedish airline Amapola Flyg, which got its start carrying mail and now operates passenger flights to smaller communities throughout Sweden. Gabriel Leigh recently joined the crew from Amapola for a trip from Stockholm to Hemavan and back.
Stay tuned for more on Fokker 50 as Leigh visits the Amapola Flyg maintenance facility.

I enjoyed every second of this video. I'm from Pekanbaru (it's a 40 minutes flight from Singapore), and during my childhood I grew up with the sights and sound of F-27s, F-28s, F-50s, and F-100s. I've been aboard these plane, except F-27s.
I find Fokker 50 to be quiet and comfortable. Now, all around me they fly ATR 72-500s, B737s and A320s only.

I, originally, come from Iceland, and Flugfélag Íslands, operated F27's and later, the F50. I flew many times during my childhood, on these planes. Very rugged, very reliable, and perfect for the harsh Icelandic conditions. It's not my favourite turboprop, with the Twin Otter by far taking the cake, but the '27 and '50 were certainly in my top 5 turboprop favourites. Great video!!!

In July 2018 I flew with exactly the same aircraft when it was employed by VLM as OO-VLI on a flight from Antwerp to London City. An incredibly cool experience to fly with such an old aircraft, indeed a real workhorse! Simply constructed, very reliable aircraft, too bad it's coming to an end in Europe too...

Great vlog as always! I am a huge Fokker fan. Who pressed the F-27/ F-28 and F-50/F-100 to their hearts? The Scandinavians and the Aussies, also the Kiwis. That just shows it can handle the extreme and everything in between! Be safe!

I enjoyed this video. It brought back many good memories. The F-27 has a unique sound. I flew the F-27 Mk.500s in 1990-1991 and have 1,500 hours in the Fokker. I was based at Reading, PA, USA for Suburban/ Allegheny Airlines. It was beautiful to fly and stable. You could put on 50 pax, 75 bags and 4hrs. of fuel, and still be under gross weight. You cannot do that in a DHC-8-300! Long live Fokker!

That has been a trade-off between modernising and keeping the cost down I know. Also that more changes were done on request from several airlines, which didn't help keeping the development cost down and gave engineering some unexpected extra work at times.

Here in Panama there are two main airlines: the more well-known Copa Airlines and the lesser known AirPanama (just domestic flights). AirPanama has a fleet consisting of Fokker 50 and Cessna aircrafts. I work for Copa and as much as I enjoy being able to be near B737s and B738s all the time, I just love watching AirPanama's Fokker 50. It has a special kind of beauty, especially with their livery 😄

That was a LOT of GPWS warnings on that first approach. The BANK ANGLE comes in at 45deg bank, which is a lot. (Generally the maximum for airlines is 30deg). Perhaps it’s acceptable for that particular airline on that particular approach, but I’d have to write a report if I exceeded even 30, let alone 45deg 😅 Great video though, and the F50 is very cool.

I actually had my visa for Australia arranged in the early days of the Fokker 50 in operation as the idea was I had to go there due to the engine flame-outs which was initially blamed on the Engine De-icing Control unit. I argued too well that it wasn't the EDC, so never went over.

@@pe1biv Ansett's operation in Western Australia became Skywest, now Virgin Australia Regional Airlines (VARA), who operated the type into mid-late 2010s. Alliance Airlines also operated a handful of the type until 2022 or so, on top of their sizeable fleet of F70 and F100 aircraft (they have the largest remaining Fokker jet fleet in the world at present, and have also invested heavily in establishing themselves as a major supplier of spare parts for the type - a large number of Fokker jets remain in service with QantasLink, and a dwindling number with VARA, too).
