More and more often flight racing drones drops cloverleaf antennas in favor of Inverted Vee antennas. They are lighter, they are smaller and usually they just works.
Can you make such a 5.8GHz inverted vee at home? Sure you can, but will it work? I took a challenge, build one and took it for a spin. Here are the results.
The most important measure for 5.8GHz anatenna is 1/4 wavelength. In this case: 13,28mm. They it has to be shortened (current will travel through copper, not void) to 12,24mm in case of 135 degree inverted v antenna.

Really brilliant video, I have been using quite a few different types of dipole and vee antennas for a while now and am thoroughly impressed by how good they perform and how easy they are to have direct to my mmck vtx and really simple to mount. I have noticed that the only time they are really out performed by a cp or pagoda style antenna is when I go behind a dense object, but for blasting around fields with a few trees or gates, then for the weight and cost I think you can't go wrong. Thank you for showing me how to make my own or at the very least repair some of the ones I have trashed.

you could print Y shape cover to have less space/weight too

Any specific diameter for copper wire ?

Friend is testing the effects of the plastic/silicone/epoxy covers on antennas, and definitely those covers affects way to much to the efficiency of the antenna!

Thanks for the nice video Just a question for the 1/4 wavelength calculation I get 12.92mm. I assume you used the speed of light for the velocity of electrons in copper wire. am I right? Or is there a special rule for the calculation in V antennas which differs from the standard linear monopol

Suppose there's such an abundance of round plastic objects to use for cover if one doesn't own a 3D printer. :) Great project. Thanks.

    Interesting shape of antenna cover...

Does vee design means it dont have nulls?

No. It only makes the antenna slighly shorter. Every practical antenna has nulls

Hotglue will have an adverse affect on resonant frequency..I guessing your Network Analyser will not be capable of measuring 5.8G..?...I made a 5.8G Dipole a few years ago...its still on my channel..:)

What antennae combination would you recommend for a diversity receiver when using this Vee antenna on the VTX? Two whip antennas laid horizontally 90 degrees apart?

    • @FPVUniversity
      @FPVUniversity  6 ปีที่แล้ว

definetly 2 linear polarized antennas. Yes, with 90 deg. separation

The other option would be using skewer planar (3dBi loss) for proximity and linear patch for flying further/through obstacles..

I asked Actuna directly (I have the Vee antenna from them) and their response to my question is "RHCP receivers will be the best". Well that's confusing..
Note that I told them that I want to use it on a freestyle miniquad.

      RHCP/LHCP would work without diversity.

Of course, but I already have diversity on my goggles, so I'd like to make use of it to get the best coverage possible.
